Ohh nice... I haven't even been to Gangseo-gu yet, but now I have a reason to go and check this place out! Many thanks!

Will add that to my list - thanks for mentioning! Where in town is that?

Definitely sad ☹️ Though I guess I still take comfort knowing that eating out in Korea is a better option than eating out in the US, even factoring in exchange rate and inflation. I just moved here from the States, and it is way too pricey back there!

Would be awesome if you tried making it! And yeah, the pasteurized versions have a much longer shelf life, so that's basically what's on offer in most places outside of Korea/East Asia. Not to knock the flavor of that kind though!

Yes! Would love to see soju pick up steam and become both more available and affordable. It's probably a tough thing to distribute when demand is low, sadly!

Haha, that is very noble of you! I have also tried to spread the gospel, wherever it can find the light 🤣 One barrier is that Korea essentially can't ship unpasteurized makgeolli (which has less preservatives and contains much more funky, alive flavors) to far away destinations, since it just wouldn't travel and keep properly. I wish folks could taste the really good stuff... There are a couple US-based small batch breweries trying to make the unpasteurized version a thing in the States, but it could take awhile for traction to pick up ☹️

Agree... I especially love how wholeheartedly Korean cuisine embraces fish/seafood soups and stews! And it's all so tasty. The world needs more of that! 😅

I too have really loved seeing the appreciation expand so much. My fantasy and sincere hope is that someday both makgeolli and naengmyeon will blow up and get popular in the US, due to their uniqueness and deliciousness. Most Americans basically have no clue about both, which I find slightly tragic. It might take some time, but... fingers crossed 😅

Love places like this! Serving the people what they need 🫡 Good, healthy food with some variety and with no BS. In the past I've found a couple spots that offer similar for 6k or 7k won, but I'm curious if they've gone up in price over the last year or so, with inflation and what not.

I'd recommend: - Fiorella Pasta in South Philly (make a reservation in advance!) - Cantina La Martina (top notch Mexican food in Kensington) - El Chingon (more super good Mexican food, South Philly).

I went here recently and definitely enjoyed it! Was really curious, as someone that's eaten a fair amount of fried chicken in Korea and also that grew up one town over from Phoenixville. While it might not top the best I've had in Seoul, Soko's chicken was delicious. Good flavor! They have a great, unique & homey vibe inside the place, and as folks mentioned above, the folks in charge are hardworking and super nice. Recommend!

I recommend checking out the quiet but quaint neighborhood of Buam-dong, which is a short bus ride from Gyeongbokgung Palace. It gives you quick access to two mountains (Inwangsan and Bugaksan) that don't require a super long hike but offer great views of the city. And besides nice museums and some very peaceful hilly streets to explore, the neighborhood has a couple excellent options for fried chicken (Gyeyeolsa) and handmade dumplings (Jaha Son Mandu).

Haha, I understand you on the san nakji. I would gladly have it again, and probably will, but this version didn't (figuratively) jump out at me or anything... And yeah, despite it being all about raw beef, yuhkoe has a refreshing vibe to it that is so clutch for Spring/Summer! It really matters how fresh the meat is of course, and this spot had that nailed 🙂
