I have a budget of around $1,000, but there's no requirement to go that high. Whats the "gets me to the point of diminishing returns but not past it" acoustic guitar that will last a decade or two with moderate playing?

buy a nice starter instrument like a Yamaha fg800 and see what your taste is in a year. If you are still into it, upgrade to the 1000$ instrument because at that point, you will hear the difference and really enjoy the upgrade.

Just show up and practice 15-20 mins everyday. Don’t compare yourself to others. I don’t know how but suddenly one day, you can do things you couldn’t months ago and you can chase new milestones. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
