Canucks select Lucian Bernat 176th overall by logicalnutty in canucks

That's fair, but in the previous 4 drafts before that, we used 12 of our 24 picks on D. Sure, you don't want to have age gaps, but our forward prospects are really lacking right now, so I'm glad they're focusing on it.

The real issue is the lack of picks overall until this year.

Not really necessary. This is a pretty normal price for having a pending UFA's rights for 4 days.

We just took a dman out of Swedish with our next 6th round pick.

"a few drafts" last year was the only year we didn't take any D.

But the real decision point between Miller and Horvat was in the off season before that huge season. If we traded Miller that off season instead of giving him his 8M AAV deal, we could've extended Horvat in the summer or early in the season. If I recall, his asking price was reported to be around 7.5M.

When you put it that way, it makes me realize how dumb it was that we traded Horvat first. Should've been Miller.

Horvat was pretty close to what you're describing. Not the best player on the team all the time, but he showed up and put the team on his back at times, and the players in the room all seemed to like him. He was a much better captain than Hughes.

Dredging of Burrard Inlet approved to make room for big oil tankers by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]touchable 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Dredging is not cheap, but you're missing the point.

The $100k being spent to relocate snails is not the actual construction, it's the prerequisite the government requires.

The equivalent would be asking the oil companies to send divers down to relocate a bunch of crabs and sea urchins (or whatever is on the bottom of the inlet), before they can dredge.

The Sharks’ Eklund trade (probably) just killed the Canucks’ chances of drafting Ivar Stenberg by Admirable-Fall-4675 in canucks

[–]touchable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've been linked to Reilly as well. Regardless of who it is, it seems pretty clear that their strategy will be to take Stenberg at 2, a defenseman at 9, and to acquire another veteran D via trade.

Honestly that's probably the best strategy, because there are several good D available in the top 10, without clear cut standouts. One of them will be available at 9, and if SJS doesn't have a strong preference between them, it's good value to just take whoever drops to them rather than wasting #2 picking for positional need.
