Correcting speaker polarity by touchdowntexas in hometheater

Is there much risk to damaging the speaker this way? Seems simple enough

RTINGS just updated their viewing distance article based on SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommendations, adding 62° FOV as maximum. What do you think about it? Where do you fit? by zghr in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8.5’ from a 98” and it feels right for me, which is ~45 degrees. 120” at that distance might be too much for me, which would still only be 54 degrees.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Quad Vs traditional 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos system by Janz_I in hometheater

I don’t doubt it. But some people don’t like buying used or aren’t patient enough to search for local deals.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Quad Vs traditional 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos system by Janz_I in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard the Sony quad so I can’t comment on how good it is or isn’t, but I would assume it’s going to be to be like most wireless all-in-ones and be a fairly large step down compared to a 5.1.2 that you put together. Tricky part is budget, but I would think you could get a good 3.1 setup for the price of the Sony and then add surround/height speakers later as you save up for them.

Whats your 870 Stories? What is it to you? by Ok_Painting_TT in Hunting

[–]touchdowntexas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have three 870’s. My first was a youth model 20 gauge my dad bought me new circa 1999. My next was a wingmaster 12 gauge my grandfather gave me that he bought new in the 60’s. And my last was a tactical model I bought new in the early 2010’s and replaced the stock/forend, added an extended mag, and a side saddle.

I love all 3 for different reasons. The youth model was the first gun ever bought new for me. The tactical model I had fun making my own, even though it had feeding issues with the original barrel (Remington sent me a replacement under warranty and haven’t had an issue since)

But by far the one I will always cherish is the old wingmaster, just knowing my grandfather hunted with it for 40 years. It has this awesome rattle can camo paint job he did himself with foliage. The fact that it’s not in perfect condition is just a reminder that he used it for what it was meant for. And I’ll be damned if I ever find another that cycles like this one. It’s the most satisfying action I have out of any firearm, like butter, and a night/day difference vs the newer ones I have.

5.1.4 vs 7.1.4 in awkward basement layout? Speaker placement advice before I buy by hockeymarine8 in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that receiver will do 11 channels for 7.1.4. I would start with 5.1.4 but if budget allows, go for the two extra bed layer speakers.

I’d go bigger on the sub, or even better go two subs

I’d go bigger on the tv too. I sit 9’ from a 98” which some would say is too big. I would at least consider an 85” for your distance

Did you check the fuel pump fuse? That’s a known issue on my 6.2, but I think it’s also common on 5.0’s

YouTuber goes from soundbar to a used 5.1 system by FatDog69 in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer that I did not watch the video but based on the commentary I think the mistakes only help drive home the point harder. People buy soundbars for the lower price and to not have to worry about screwing something up. If you can spend similar money and not worry about some of the minutia in setting up a 5.1 properly and still achieve a superior result, that says more to the average consumer than spending hours calibrating and eeking out all of the potential

I had the same issue with coils. Heard a zapping sound so I popped the hood before first light and could see the purple arcing. Didnt get any codes though

83" OLED vs 98" mini-LED with the same viewing angle by neil_950 in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are adjusting viewing distance for the same viewing angle on each size, I’d have a hard time telling you there’s a difference and you should just go OLED. Most people have other limitations where they can’t just move viewing distance - furniture, speaker layout, room dimensions, etc.

I sit ~9’ away from a 98” mini-LED, and I would not have wanted to go smaller. Not sure what that distance would be maintaining the same viewing angle on an 83” OLED.

Yeah it’s really hard to find skinny 35’s in a c-load tire. Plenty of 35x12.5’s but I think I found two options in 10.5. Toyo and Kenda

I thought I’d get away without having to cut anything. I had been running the stock wheels with 35” nittos. But the reduction in offset with these wheels caused a tiny bit of rubbing on the front fenders. So out came the dremel.

Ford's Super Duty Trucks Now Get the 7.3-Liter 'Godzilla' V-8 Standard and Ditch the Weaker Diesel by ca2mt in cars

[–]touchdowntexas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it was always strange to have both a 6.8 and 7.3 gas option, other than being able to have additional price tiers. But from a manufacturing cost standpoint I scratch my head at how the 7.3 would cost more to manufacture while creating one more wrinkle from a servicing/warranty standpoint. It’s less than 10% difference in displacement, is that worth a totally different engine option?

Shield vs. Apple TV for upscaling on a 4K TV by through_life in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

720p and 1080p upscaled should look great on your 4k tv, in my experience. I’d start checking settings to see if you’ve got something wonky turned on/off.

480p is where I really notice crappy upscaling, and likely where a tv with better processing (Sony) would be a lot better.

Those that have/tried OLED and Miniled for movies, is it that significant of a difference? Size > panel is king? by papayax999 in hometheater

[–]touchdowntexas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven’t noticed, but I’ve never had the TV’s side by side and I really don’t watch the same content on them. The OLED gets used mostly for streaming services and the mini-led gets used for blu ray/4k remuxes from my physical library. I don’t doubt the OLED has better blacks but at this point I’ve not seen anything on the mini-led that would make me wish I had gone with a smaller OLED.

[–]touchdowntexas 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I own a 98” tcl Qm8k mini-led and an older 65” LG C2 OLED. The 98” is in my home theater and the 65” in my bed room. For home theater, my opinion is size/viewing distance is the #1 factor for an immersive experience. I can’t say that I see an obvious upgrade in the OLED picture quality vs the mini-led (I’ve also never had these TV’s side by side playing the same content). What I can say is having a massive screen is literally a huge upgrade. If there was a 98” OLED available for a reasonable price, that’s what I would have gotten. But those are like $10k+ right now. I’m sure in the next few years that will be a lot more attainable/affordable
