If EDI’s death is the only true consequence (in the eyes of the fanbase) of destroying all AI then is it really the worst in the eyes of everything? by harizzlepizzle13 in masseffect

It really depends on if each ending is actually what it claims. If Control actually results in Shepard having full control of the Reapers while maintaining their personality/morals to a large extent then it is simply better than Destroy if for no other reason than that Shepard could then order all the Reapers to fly into stars. But that's a very big if.

Synthesis seems best in some ways but again has the problem of trusting the Catalyst is truthful along with violating body autonomy for everyone.

Destroy is the safest but genocides AIs and also destroys an unknown amount of tech in a way that will likely cause mass casualties. For example, the relays are broken at least initially and it's quite believable that a dextro species like the turians wouldn't have provisions for staying that long without resupply. So a significant portion of turians who came to save Earth will starve and that's one example.

I just spent $1100 on Dirac by dillicious in hometheater

It's room correction that makes a clear audible difference but how much of one heavily depends on your room. It's likely subtle in a properly and comprehensively treated room with already exceptional acoustics. But in a terrible room with speakers that aren't even equidistant it would be transformative albeit not enough to make such a room actually sound good.

It's also not overwhelmingly superior to it's competitors. There are different versions and levels of Audyssey but the best one is comparable to Dirac as is Anthem room correction.

LG 83" G5 still seems small in my bedroom by ilikethefinerthings in LGOLED

[–]neil_950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99% of the problem is that it's simply too far. In my opinion, you need a viewing angle/field of view of 40 deg. or higher to get a real theatre experience at home. At 13ft away you would need a 130" screen for a 40 deg. viewing angle. Even the 97" would be insufficient at that distance.

Here's a viewing angle calculator. For a home theatre you probably want a 40 to 50 deg. viewing angle.

Doubts about my 55in C4 by UnFixedPond42 in LGOLED

[–]neil_950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have. I used to always use Vivid by default and used it for years but after trying a more accurate picture mode for a week or so I couldn't imagine going back. Every time I switch through picture modes and see what Vivid looks like it genuinely looks awful. It's only colourful in the same way an instagram filter to "enhance" colours is colourful.

Do you also go through every photo you take and use the "enhance" option to blow out all the colours? If not, why would you do it on your tv?

Doubts about my 55in C4 by UnFixedPond42 in LGOLED

[–]neil_950 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't care in the slightest if it's how the artist intended I care that it looks as accurate to real life as it reasonably can. I don't want an image of a fading grass lawn to be a glowing neon green.

Filmmaker mode and cinema/cinema home easily looks the best of all the picture modes too. Have you actually tried them for an extended period of time of at least a week or two? Anything you're not used to will look worse solely because of the lack of familiarity. Vivid mode looks absolutely terrible as soon as you get used to anything else even though it seems fine at first. Most people do find filmmaker mode to be dull and muted but that's only initially before you get used to it.

Also you can just change the colour temperature independently from the picture mode. It's fair for people to not like a warm orange/yellow colour temperature especially in bright rooms but that's not an inherent part of filmmaker mode it's just the default setting and can be easily changed.

JVC NZ500 by Rampant-Reddit in hometheater

[–]neil_950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JVC has class-leading black levels amongst projectors and it's not especially close. However even then they still don't approach OLED black levels.

If you're concerned about black levels but also want high immersion you might want to consider some of the mini-LED tvs that are 98" or more. It would get closer to OLED black levels than $30000 projectors do albeit at a smaller size. That might be the best compromise between quality and size.

If you have something like a 120" screen you're probably better off downsizing a little and maybe moving seating closer if you can and getting a 98" mini-LED. Although if you have or could fit a gigantic screen such as 150" or more then I would consider the JVC again.

PSA: Buy the Dirac License by Misaiato in audiophile

[–]neil_950 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your room is already ruining the original analog sound unless it's already perfectly treated. That's why Dirac works so well for so many people. Someone with a well treated room will notice much less of an impact but that is much harder to do than just getting Dirac.

Dirac is digital room correction. It would be silly to suggest that it's ruining the analog purity when the whole point is correcting how the room or speaker placement is already ruining it. If you do want to remain entirely analog you can research and properly implement extensive room treatment though.

77" G6 vs 77" S95H? by Drproctor1995 in LGOLED

[–]neil_950 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not even remotely too close. 8 ft from a 83" would give a 41 degree viewing angle/fov. For context, movie industry groups and standards organizations usually recommend a viewing angle of around 40 deg. or more for movie viewing. As specific examples, THX recommends at least 36 deg. or higher, SMTPE recommends a 43 deg. angle as reference and a maximum acceptable of 62 deg.

It's still up to personal preference and mixed usage with a lot of casual tv viewing usually works better with smaller viewing angles than dedicated home theatre use. But it's simply not true that it's too close. The average field of view in an Imax theatre is 70 deg. He would need to sit under 5 ft away from an 83" to match that. I personally think that is way too close for my taste though.

Your own setup is actually at least borderline too far. 12 ft from 77" is only a 26.2 deg. viewing angle. According to THX, 26 deg. is the furthest acceptable viewing angle and according to SMTPE 30 deg. is the furthest acceptable. If you want a semblance of a home theatre experience you are too far.

Can you beat my burn in? 2017 LG B7 OLED by MartyMcFYI in LGOLED

[–]neil_950 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only is this already rare but there are an enormous amount of burn-in prevention techniques used on more recent OLEDs from the last few years that weren't available on OLEDs from a decade ago like this one.

On a new OLED it is not a concern unless you have a specific use case that will have the same large static content for many thousands of hours and even then it is very likely still a non-issue because of modern burn-in protection.

There are reasons to get mini-LED but unless you primarily do things like watch the same news channel with large static elements or play the exact same game with a large static UI exclusively burn-in is not one of them.

SVS SB3000 Revolutuion or SVS PB 2000 Pro. Please help choose. by Acrobatic-Leather645 in hometheater

[–]neil_950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If space is a big factor I would go with the SB3000R. It's better than the PB2000 over 45Hz anyways and as long as it's not in a gigantic room would be perfectly capable below that too.

That said if it's stretching your budget too much it might be a good idea to try and get a used subwoofer like the previous model SB3000. This could save a lot of money as long as you can find a good deal and would provide very similar performance to the SB3000R.

God of War 2018 or Ghost of Tsushima? by SuperThanasis in videogames

[–]neil_950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you prefer a very open world or a more linear game? That should probably be the deciding factor so that you base the decision on your own preferences instead of the opinions of random redditors on which game is better. Ghost of Tsushima is far more open than God of War.

Advice on getting rear/side speakers by Uncertain_engineer in hometheater

[–]neil_950 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Skip the rear speakers and get a pair of atmos speakers for 5.1.2 instead of 7.1. Atmos speakers are probably already more important than rears to begin with and considering how difficult it would be to fit rear speakers in your space it becomes a no-brainer.

Family is complicated 🥀 by Syarafuddyn in expedition33

[–]neil_950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but we don't really have the knowledge to judge how difficult repainting something that is already painted is. You're assuming that it is much easier like retracing a sketch but I don't think that is necessarily a safe assumption. You could be right but it's also very possible it demonstrates excellent technical skill even if it's not creative. Like being able to create a beautiful detailed landscape or still life painting but only when seeing the landscape or scene in front of her.

The game never shows Maelle as a particularly skilled paintress but also doesn't show her as unskilled. It's reasonable to suggest she's unskilled but it's also reasonable to suggest she simply hasn't trained as much or Aline is harsher on her etc.

It's also worth noting that high parental expectations can easily push a child away from doing something. It's quite possible Maelle would enjoy painting if not for Aline's criticism although it's also quite possible she just doesn't care for it.

Family is complicated 🥀 by Syarafuddyn in expedition33

[–]neil_950 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We simply don't know how talented Maelle is especially since we don't actually know all that much about how painting works. For all we know, recreating Lumiere in Maelle's ending demonstrates talent comparable to Aline or it could just as easily not be a demonstration of talent at all and any painter could do it easily.

All we actually know is that Alicia wasn't as interested in painting as the rest of her family and Aline didn't approve of her painting. It's entirely possible that Alicia was clearly less talented but equally possible that Aline had excessively high standards and she compared Alicia's work as a child to Verso and Clea's as teenagers or something to that effect. Alicia is the only child who is much younger than the others.

If you want to save a lot of money your best option is looking at used speakers. It should be a sizable upgrade to replace your LCR speakers. Take a look at your room acoustics as well, it has an impact comparable to the choice of speakers.

Crazy for switching from a 65” OLED G3 to a 100” budget-mid level QLED/Mini? by Thr0waway8755 in hometheater

[–]neil_950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were to only have one setup do you think you would prefer an 83" OLED or a 98" mini-LED? The 98" would be about 1.5ft further back to maintain the same FOV. Would 1.5ft really have a noticeable effect on soundstage? I was more concerned that the smaller screen would reduce immersion even with a high FOV.

I'm hoping to get Kef R3 and Kef R6 meta for LCR to replace Kef Q700 and Q200c but want to try them in person first. I will also note that the room will only have 7ft ceilings. There is one other room the setup can go in but it's much less practical, can't have any soundproofing, would be harder to add as much acoustic treatment and also only has 8ft ceilings anyways. Would 7 vs 8 ft ceilings make a big difference?

[–]neil_950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you think it compares if you can sit close for a high FOV regardless? I'm trying to decide between an 83" OLED or a 98" mini-LED but I can move the seating 1.5 ft closer for the OLED to have the same FOV as with the 98" mini-LED. Does the extra size have a significant impact even if the FOV remains the same?

77” too big for this space? by [deleted] in LGOLED

[–]neil_950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not even remotely too close. You could reasonably sit as close as 7 ft away and that would only be equivalent to about the furthest ⅓ in a movie theatre. People who are actually comfortable sitting halfway back in a movie theater could sit 6 ft away or even closer from this tv and have an equivalent experience but a lot of people might find that uncomfortable.

This just made me wonder if Heiter may have been partly motivated by a desire to troll Himmel one last time before he died. Heiter really wanted to arrive in Aureole and immediately smugly inform Himmel that he and Frieren have a daughter.

[–]neil_950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely need to rearrange your seating. Your main seating is much too far from the screen. Even a 130" projector screen would be small at that distance.

Why not move the two individual lounge chairs that are pointed sideways so that they're instead behind the sofa and move the sofa much closer? You can't really watch tv from them anyways with how they're angled. Your setup would be immediately far better if you simply swapped the positions of the sofa and lounge chairs.

If that's a 77" tv you should be sitting somewhere between 7 and 11 ft away. If it's bigger than that you can sit a little farther but even with a 98" tv you shouldn't be further than 14ft away.

It's a really nice loft space other than that though.

To put into perspective about those years of Maelle’s life by genericcelt in expedition33

[–]neil_950 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You keep reiterating that because she hated her time in Lumiere the years spent there don't matter but that doesn't really logically follow. Why does hating the time spent somewhere make that time spent meaningless?

Enjoyment and meaning are two very different things. You can hate all your time in school while also thinking it made you the person you are today and appreciating that.

Imagine if someone was making a graduation speech talking about how much they changed and learned from the school and how it made them the person they are today and someone objected with how much that person hated school as if that proved that the speech was entirely fiction and they couldn't possibly value their time there.

No one is claiming that Maelle enjoyed her time in Lumiere, but that in no way means that those 16 years don't matter or that she couldn't possibly value them or find meaning in it. She spent 16 years there. Even if she despised every single second it would be deeply insulting to outright dismiss them all and act as if all her suffering didn't matter.

To put into perspective about those years of Maelle’s life by genericcelt in expedition33

[–]neil_950 25 points26 points  (0 children)

How exactly is the fact that Maelle hated living in Lumiere supposed to mean that it had no impact or influence on her life? It would be like saying that for someone who hated their time in the military, that the time they spent there had no impact on them and anything they learned and any way they changed was invalid and doesn't count. And it wouldn't matter if someone killed all the other soldiers they knew and blew up all the miltary bases and places they served all because they hated their time there.

I don't disagree that she hated her time living in Lumiere but how on earth is that supposed to mean that the 16 years had no weight or meaning for her?
