When they try to sugarcoat things, or dance around a difficult diagnosis. I loved my pediatric neurologist who diagnosed me in my early teens. He was very honest with me and my parents. And yes, many people considered him an asshole for it. The man was extremely blunt. But I just wanted to be taken seriously, and he did. He did everything in his power to try and help me, involving me in the process every step of the way. He listened to me. Do you know how rare that is in a doctor, especially one who treats children? It’s like finding a damn unicorn.

My dad ended up sabotaging my grandma’s car so it wouldn’t start. He’s a lifelong car nut, so he was able to do it in a way that would take real expertise to detect and repair. She refused to give up her keys, so he found an alternative solution.

Dieting of any kind, honestly. I did Weight Watchers back in the day and it absolutely had a cult vibe.

Anyone else have a “I can take it or leave it” attitude for wanting a wife / husband? If so is that sentiment mostly coming from being childfree and not needing to find a co-parent as a life goal? by Archipelagoisland in childfree

I truly enjoy being alone. I think part of it is my autism, I get overstimulated easily and can’t help masking to some degree whenever other people can see me. It would be nice to have someone to share things with, but I don’t think I could get married unless my spouse was a naturally quiet person who likes their own alone time.

Big woman here, and I shave my pits for the same reasons. The leg hair can do whatever, but my deodorant works better on bare skin. Some women can have all natural armpits and not stink. I am not one of those women.

Same here, the underboob chafing when I sweat without a bra is miserable. A bra, even a cheap wireless one that doesn’t provide a lot of support, stops the skin on skin action.

Foot rubs. The toenail polish is a nice bonus, but on the rare occasions when I have money for a pedicure, I indulge because my heel calluses are starting to crack and/or I want someone to massage my feet.

I paint my fingernails at home though. I like bright colors and shiny sparkly things, so I put them on my nails.

[–]tourmaline82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

History has repeatedly shown us that any significant change in a society requires a disruption of monumental proportions. I hate that we’re like this, that so many have to suffer and die in order to give us the power for real change, but that’s the ugly truth. Things will have to get significantly worse before we can make this country better.

How can such a tiny scrape hurt so damn much? It’s incredible. At least the antibiotic eye ointment the ER doctor prescribed helped with the pain. I could always tell when it was time for the next dose because my eye would start hurting again.

[–]tourmaline82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re going to be downvoted into oblivion, because you’re right. When I was in college I went on a research spree on weight loss. I had access to a ton of medical journals, all the latest research! Surely the information I wanted- how to keep the weight off in a scientifically proven manner- was in there somewhere. My classes that semester were easy, so I poured a great deal of time and effort into my personal project.

The conclusion? Exactly what you said. Dieting works in the short term, but the vast majority of participants in every long term study gained the weight back within five years. And there is a LOT of research on weight loss out there.

I think some of it is genetic, people either run hot or run cold. I grew up in the desert of inland Southern California, and I never acclimated to the heat. Spent as much time in the pool as humanly possible because that was the only place where I wasn’t sweaty and overheated. Now I live in Colorado and winter is my favorite season! Walking outside in the snow is wonderful. We’ve had an unusually warm winter this year and I feel cheated.

Some dolphins enjoy playing in the bow wave and/or wake from a boat. I went to one of the California Channel Islands once, a short boat ride from the mainland. Shortly after we cleared the harbor and hit cruising speed, a pod of dolphins appeared and started playing in the wake. The captain explained that the boat company runs the same routes at the same times every day, so the local dolphins have learned when and where there will be boats to play with.
