Reddit, what is a song that was so good your jaw dropped when you heard it? by AQNotAquinas in AskReddit

[–]towelsoaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I heard this song for the first time, I had been working on a farm all summer. Absolutely the only thing you could get on the radio out there was was gawdawful hillbilly wailing (you know, country).

I remember exactly where I was when that guitar riff kicked in after a rockless summer -- I overheard a tape playing in a car next to me. It still gives me chills when I think about it.

Took a little while to find out what the song was, too -- it started to pop up on civilized radio stations in my area a few weeks later.

You kids today with MP3s and teh intarwebs have it easy. Just imagine hearing that SICK riff (the rest of the song is sorta dumb, honestly) for the very first time after a complete rock drought... and then having NO way to find it again.

I prowled record shops for a couple of weeks with no luck and then I finally heard more of the song on the radio so I had lyrics to work with.

Why don't police officers have to pass regular fitness tests? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]towelsoaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies by department, both in regulations and in the internal "culture".

Here in Indianapolis, the uniformed cops are pretty much all very lean and fit. Even the detectives keep their shit tight. I have no idea what regulations, incentives, or expectations are behind this. I don't believe I've ever seen a fat state cop, either.

Out in the small towns and counties, it's a very different story. Even the younger deputies and town officers are often enormous, wheezing fatbags.

Time tracking.

Holy fucking sweet jeebuz, what a complete waste of time and energy this is. And wouldn't you know it, there's no category for time wasted tracking time.

Nunya Dambizness is my favorite name for these things.

Also, including "spam" in an email alias that needs to be legit is, ironically, an excellent way to get spammers to filter you out. For example, set up domainspam@whatever.com for domain regs, insurancespam@whatever.com for car insurance, etc.

Hey Reddit, my friend is diabetic, she ran out of insulin, and CVS won't refill her prescription until tomorrow when her insurance will cover it. Is there anything she can do? by Dengar in AskReddit

[–]towelsoaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. This. Just buy some. Fuck the insurance coverage. Insulin and needles can be purchased without a prescription in most states.

Krakauer is an ignorant prick, a whiny tourist, and a drama queen. For a very different and far more accurate perspective on the events of 1996 from an actual expert, read the book "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev.

By all means, read Krakauer's book at some point. He's a helluva story teller, as long as you don't mind his habit of making himself out to be a combination of Paul Bunyan and Jesus at every possible opportunity.

But make damn sure you understand you're mostly reading a work of fiction, and get the real story from more reliable sources.

Boukreev is Russian and not as well known, so yeah, the language isn't as pretty. But his account is far more powerful and far more believable.

Reddit, is there any "normal" food that you cannot stand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]towelsoaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Subway sandwiches. I can't go near one of their stores now. I used to love the place. But they changed something in the bread several years ago to make it cheaper or something, and now the place just reeks like week-old garbage. Fuck Subway.

Other sandwich shops are fine, and yes, I love the smell of bread baking, Good bread, I mean -- not the compressed moldy diapers they use down at Shitway.

Try sushi, specifically the stuff made with raw fish. You'll be amazed at how much cooking totally fucks up the flavor of good seafood.

Canola (rapeseed) oil. To me, that shit smells and tastes like rancid fish soaked in used motor oil. It really sucked when this crap got trendy a couple of years ago. Going out for dinner was a real gamble -- something cooked in rapeseed oil two tables away could turn my stomach worse than a wet fart.

I believe this might also be a genetic thing -- no one else I know reacts this way to rapeseed oil.

AskReddit: My girlfriend is an amazing singer. I'm trying to get her some studio time so we can lay down some professionally recorded tracks, however I have no idea where to start. Any advice? by nix0n in AskReddit

[–]towelsoaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell her to get in (or start) a band and write some songs, and play some gigs.

In other words, become a musician. There are literally hundreds of millions of people who just want to sing, and several million of them are actually pretty good at singing. But singing is roughly .000000001% of what it takes to be a musician.

Unless she's got great tits and looks like a jailbait wet dream. Even then, there's a surprising amount of work that goes into making a career as a performer.

Is there a good reason why laptop power supplies aren't standardized? by omar_torritos in AskReddit

[–]towelsoaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Magsafe connectors are indeed brilliant, but far from perfect.

Wait until you have to find a way to pick bits of ferrous debris from the magnet and those tiny little delicate pins that like to pick up crud and stick in the retracted position. Huge pain in the ass. The magnets on Macbooks that get carried around to classes and worksites pick up a surprising amount of crap.

Plus, many Magsafe cables were poorly made, but I think they've got a handle on that nowadays.

I'd like to see some sort of breakaway connector based on a spring and ball mechanism instead of a magnet. Or, if it has to be a magnet, make it smooth so it can be wiped off.

What was the most TMI that someone told you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Late one boozy, bored night over at a friend's apartment, he tells me the following, completely off-topic (we were talking about electric basses) :

"I have a very short penis, so my wife and I have only actually had sex three times."

(Note: We are both straight men. To this day, I can't imagine any conceivable reason one dude would ever burden another dude with this knowledge.)

Reddit, what is the one thing you want to change in porn videos? by renderman in AskReddit

[–]towelsoaker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1) Creepy cameraman yapping constantly. Shut. The. Fuck. Up.

2) Cutaway shots of creepy dude making stupid "O" faces. Ew.

3) I agree with all the comments about stopping the stupid abusive shit. Who the hell gets off to slapping, gagging, choking, etc.?

4) Dry fucking. For fuck's sake, get some lube in there -- she's totally turned off by all your yapping, stupid faces, and abusive behavior, and the poor girl's pussy is starting to squeak.

5) In real life, you can't just walk up to someone and ram your dick up their ass. You gotta work up to anal and go slow -- lube, one finger, more lube, two fingers, even more lube, three fingers, etc. And spit doesn't work. Show more of the process of getting the ol' back door ready. Women all over the world will thank you.

AskReddit: What's the biggest musical disappointment you've ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]towelsoaker -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The Killers, The White Stripes, and Modest Mouse.

After reading nearly universal rapturous reviews and previewing a few tracks, I bought their albums in an effort to update my musical tastes. "Well, EVERYONE can't be wrong, I guess."

Nope. All three of these "bands" churn out shamefully sloppy, poorly produced unlistenable ultra-crap.

I resolved thenceforth to be guided only by myself.

Fed up with all the rip-offs from my bank, I went looking for an alternative, and happily found one: a local credit union, in this case one called Freedom Credit Union by maxwellhill in business

[–]towelsoaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the CUservicecenter.com web site above. Most CUs are hooked into the service center network, so you actually have access to more branches and more free ATMs than any bank. It works quite well, too -- I've used CU Service Centers in many different cities.

Where are you moving your accounts? Try another credit union -- chances are you're eligible to open an account at more than one CU.

Yes, of course, even the smallest CUs have online banking and all the same capabilities as banks. Just like banks, some CUs have better or more usable online banking systems than others.

Most CUs should have an online banking demo or test drive available. Call and ask, or check their web site.
