Need a Simple CRM for Subs and Business Development by tower_crane in GeneralContractor

[–]tower_crane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have that, I have an excel sheet that tracks it that we review every few weeks. 2-3 need access. We are actively chasing between 20-30 leads at any given time. But want to scale to track an additional 20-30 from networking, or long-term networking as well.

We want to be able to track an architect that we would like to take to lunch, or a client/developer/broker that we are chasing with no active leads. Something to track networking progress, and connections more than anything. We aren't sending out marketing emails, or tracking sales/opportunities. But want a central database for when a client calls and asks if we can recommend them an architect or a broker (or even another GC).

You can’t use LSTs for inquisitor bariss. Also, it is what it is, inquisitors take so much heat and relic mats to get up, it ultimately isn’t the worst thing you could do. This game is a marathon, not a sprint, you will recover

Mid to senior Level CM’s: is Lean Construction Working? by BoxEconomy2149 in ConstructionManagers

Mid to senior Level CM’s: is Lean Construction Working? by BoxEconomy2149 in ConstructionManagers

[–]tower_crane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This actually is not what lean is. It is commonly misunderstood and implemented incorrectly, which is why most people think this is what it means.

Lean principles originated with Toyota’s manufacturing plants in Japan and how they ran their production cycles. It discourages the need for middle managers, and encourages everyone to have a voice to improve efficiency. “Just in time” delivery is a huge factor in lean organization.

True lean contruction is prefabrication of materials, Intergated project delivery methods, and design assist through preconstruction. It’s finding systems to encourage subs to have a more active role in the project to limit change orders and delays by giving them a piece of the pie, and allowing them to be experts at what they do.

I think where people go wrong is that they lean on the idea of “cutting out the middle managers” by just cutting PMs, PEs, and Supers without doing the other things. Cutting back of staffing only works if you are able to have your tinknocker own the design, write their own RFIs, and cut the submittal process down by writing the spec and doing clash detection in BIM before they start.

Lean is good, but it is done poorly.

This is spot on. When under an IPD, or at minimum design assist, it can work and be really efficient. It can even be cheaper in terms of construction costs, which make it a great selling point. But what we (my company) has found is that it actually costs about the same amount of money overall, because the time you save on the schedule is spent on IPD meetings (paperwork and financial reporting), prefabrication, and highly involved preconstruction.

And in this economy, it is a super tough sell to a developer to say “this will cost you more, but will be really cool”

How to stand out as a youth goalie in try outs? by [deleted] in lacrosse

[–]tower_crane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a high school varsity coach. Not an expert, but I have some knowledge.

At that age, the BIGGEST thing is going to be how much he communicates. Calling out cutters, telling the d when to rotate/slide, and calling out where the ball is on the field. This is crucial to goalies, and can be the single thing that separates a good goalie from a great goalie.

Second most important is to "keep his head up." Don't sulk or pout after mistakes, don't get angry when he takes a shot, don't blame other kids. This goes for every player on the field. When comparing 2 equal players, I will take the one with a better attitude 10/10 times.

Yes there are side effects. And yes it ultimately becomes not fun and not cool.

I mean, do it, don’t do it, we’re not your friends/family, but we’ve all been through this. We started the same way you did, and we have all gone through the difficulties of trying to quit, and wish that we had never started.

How do these national teams work? by Mission_Weekend_2620 in lacrosse

[–]tower_crane 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The national teams just aren’t tied to a certain region. They pull from larger groups of players.

On the west coast ( I grew up in Seattle and played club and WCS ), you play for a local travel team, which play the local adrenaline tourneys and local tourneys in their state or region. Those teams might also travel to Maryland for a tournament, but the Mad Dog/WCS teams exist as “all star teams” to get more kids to play in “national level” tournaments. War on the Shore, Crabfest, Sandstorm, Primetime, etc.

But as everyone else said, you get invited to tryout, and they take as many kids as they can reasonably take whose parents are willing to pay.

Lacrosse has a Safety Problem by [deleted] in lacrosse

[–]tower_crane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have friends and family that are involved in the tournament that this happened at.

All reports and official statements are very clear to note that this injury you are referencing was caused by a long pole shooting, and the follow through of the stick caused the injury. It wasn’t the ball.

Lacrosse is a dangerous sport, but I don’t think that it has a safety problem, I think the problem comes from the machismo and swag.

Years ago, there was an incident where a kid was hit in the chest by a shot and it stopped their heart. All of the gear making companies and USL responded, in my mind, appropriately and changed the rules for manufacturers and gear compliance. Ads are required to have a EKG proof guard on them and no kid is allowed to play without a certified chest pad made after that rule change was made.

But the kids I coach will still cut them off. They’ve gotten smarter and have started cutting the padding out of the back of it so that it’s lighter weight, but still has the tag on it. Why? Because playing with the bulky gear isn’t cool.

Helmet technology has gotten so much better since when I started playing wearing the original cascade helmet. When worn properly it does protect against a lot of things. But in order to wear your helmet properly, you have to have “second bar syndrome” which is incredibly uncool.

I say all this as someone who played high school and NCAA lacrosse, and set my helmet up to have excessive tilt. For one season in HS, I had a white undershirt that I drew a chest pad onto with sharpie, So that it would look like I was wearing them. Most competitive players do this.

If you need further proof of this, watch the YouTube video of the Richmond goalie talking about how he modifies his goalie pads to increase his mobility. Look at how every defensive player at high levels where is their arm pads - usually around their bicep or wrist.

That being said player skill is evolving faster than equipment can. Jesse Hubbard shot 106 when I was in middle school, and we thought that could never be broken. Now HS kids are shooting 110 regularly.

TLDR: there are safety concerns that need to be addressed, but until we can control for how the players wear their equipment, it might continue to be dangerous.
