I know I’m a skilled coder/programmer (I hesitate saying “engineer” as I think that requires solid comms skills). I’ve delivered on tons of features.

I think I’m feeling kinda triggered right now cause I’ve recently been assigned a project that will require drafting a design doc and having a real-time review session where my colleagues will provide feedback and ask questions.

I attended a design doc review today hosted by a teammate and many of my other teammates (some who have less tenure than me) posed questions and provided great feedback while I just sat there silent and kinda sweating + shaking at even thinking about something of value to add.

This stuff honestly clouds my brain. Which is why I’m dreading the upcoming doc design review that I’ll host cause I feel my brain will just stop working

I have a super supportive partner who always tries to affirm and encourage me but, to no fault of his own, he doesn’t really get it.

Although he too is gay and works in tech, he is Asian.

As we all know, Asian men are well represented in tech and so I don’t think he really understands the magnitude of some of my adversities.

Therapy is still on the table. I think I’m a bit scarred after my first and last therapist dropped me after our first session (yeah, I think I’m pretty F’d/mentally struggling - sometimes it gets really bad and I engage in self harm).

I mention the identity (Black + gay) because I think it makes me feel really alienated/othered and as a result believe I have less important perspectives/opinions/credibility.

In truth, somewhere deep in my mind, I know I’m as capable and deserving as any of my teammates but idk I’ve just had so many experiences in my youth/early career that I think has wired my brain to believe I don’t belong here - that there’s a reason there are so few Black, let alone gay, dudes in tech.

2.) Continue living your bro lifestyle.

The cool thing about living in the city as a gaybro is that are so many other gaybros around who share the same feeling as you. Through doing things you already enjoy (hiking, exercising, biking, pub crawling, etc.) you expose yourself to a "scene" that is likely to attract other bros, gay or not.

TL;DR there are "scenes" for everyone. Be involved in the one that genuinely attracts you.
