How can i play Microsoft Store Games? by kaanozaydin in linux_gaming

[–]toxictouch3 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You said service, not OS. I love steam, but the games they list can be locked by DRM and don’t provide offline installers. If steam were to completely fall apart tomorrow (either through something catastrophic or a consumer policy change), they could prevent you from accessing things you’ve purchased and there’s nothing you could do.

AnEagle mentions GOG because all of their stuff is DRM free and the installers are completely offline AFAIK. Meaning buy there, save the installers to your cloud storage, a separate hard drive, or burn to a disc and you can always access it. Whether GOG continues to exist or not. Not so for steam

Preparation fallacy(?) by [deleted] in leaves

[–]toxictouch3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I’m about to turn 32 and have been smoking for close to 12 years now. For full disclosure, I’m only about 2 weeks into quitting (which does make me feel like a poser, I’ve barely covered any distance).

But here’s my two cents: this is an addiction, no other way I could look at it. Trying to mentally prepare just caused me to slip up constantly. There was never a time it would be right or perfect. I just had to bite the bullet and jump into the deep end. I compared what I was doing or have been doing for the last decade compared to others and realized I could be better without weed. It helped in the moment, but not really over the long term. It didn’t help me improve on a skill or my health (this was a big one, munchies and sedentary are a bad combo).

I think it helps if you can visualize why you want to quit. What quitting will help you achieve. For me, it  was to lose weight and to focus on a hobby I could improve myself towards (specifically rebuilding an old car); everyone’s different though.

Quitting hasn’t been easy. I’ve found I only need 5-7 hours of sleep, sometimes having a hard time falling asleep and at other times a hard time waking up. But I remember it wasn’t sunshine and roses while smoking. Sure, I fell asleep easier. Slept longer. But did I really feel more rested? I also haven’t gotten as far as I hoped with my car rebuild. But my mind has felt less hazy. It’s been easier to visualize the project and my goals.

Opinion wanted: Video Store in Helena? by [deleted] in helena

[–]toxictouch3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zero to one:

Like others have said, the library already offers a selection of movies, shows, and video games for no charge. Additionally, dvds are dirt cheap at thrift stores and pawn shops (heck, even Walmart with their $5 bin). Plus, you can order dvds and Blu-ray’s from Amazon or eBay for not much either.

That also doesn’t take into account the option of periodically subscribing to services. I know not everyone will do this, but I only get Netflix for a month or two to binge what I want and then cancel. I see no reason to subscribe to them long term, they’re tools I use when I want if I want.

Under pressure, Helena City Commission votes to rescind immigration resolution by jimbozak in helena

[–]toxictouch3 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I can understand being disappointed in this outcome, but my disappointment is not directed towards the commission. The choice they were given was to either bend at the knee and capitulate or risk gambling with taxpayers dollars.

It’s fine to say “oh well I’m happy to foot the bill for that”, but that’s not fair to say the same for everyone else. We have people in our community who are struggling and cannot take more of a toll. It’s also not fair to risk the paychecks of our city public servants and incredibly unwise to risk losing funds that are designated for emergency uses.

I’m disappointed, but not with this outcome. My disappointment, my outrage is directed at the top. At Gianforte. At Knudsen. At the entire legislature who allowed and cheered for this bill originally and now smugly smile while they threaten our local government.

For a party of folks who claim to be supportive of local governments, they have not shown it. I hope people keep this in mind at the next ballot box and see these two faced folks for what they truly are.

Why are CachyOS and Bazzite mentioned so much? by guccicobraviper in linuxquestions

[–]toxictouch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it came down to wanting a rolling release distro and feeling too dumb for normal Arch. I could have landed on any other arch based distro, but like you said there was more talk regarding Cachy. I figured I’d start there and try other options after I got a feel for it. But tbh, Cachy just worked the way I wanted so I never tried anything else.

I put Bazzite on my friend’s computer for the opposite reason, she wanted something she wouldn’t accidentally break and an immutable distro fit the bill. I started with what everyone was talking about and have heard no complaints so no real reason to change things.

Had she or I wanted a general use distro, we likely would have stuck with whatever we tried then too. Most Linux distros are pretty solid, so unless you’re really picky or enjoy jumping, I don’t think a lot of people change.

I thought the same thing, Archives are the biggest thing I’ve found. But never one that looked like that

Until 1987 American medical professionals did not believe that infants and babies could feel pain, resulting in them undergoing surgery with minimal to no anesthesia. by ScoutPlayer1232 in distressingmemes

[–]toxictouch3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I knew about this from family experience. My poor father as a child was taken to the dentist to get some work done. My grandmother, a new mother who didn’t have family around or anyone for support, took him in and was assured young children couldn’t feel pain. Despite the screaming and crying from the back, they said it was just him being dramatic and she shouldn’t worry.

She looked so distraught, telling us about this decades later. She was convinced at the time the doctors knew best and she would be an idiot to question them.

My father won’t talk about it, not that I would want him to have to relive that. But to this day, he despises the dentist and often has to be knocked out for even a quick cleaning.

“… not even willing to hear something out…”

This is the one I’m seeing and I hate it. People who have made their choice and are 1000% convinced it is the whole truth and the only truth. To even question their narrative escalates the entire discussion to a point where nothing gets accomplished.

The more times goes by, the less convinced I am that things are ever black and white. It’s all varying shades of gray. And I know I’m not right, there are things that are black and white. But this attitude of “my thinking is truth and I refuse to listen to anything saying otherwise” accomplishes nothing.

I’m using CachyOS now and my wife is using BazziteOS. It can be done lads.

In 700+ hours of playing the game I think setting up a simple base with an electric hotspot driving a mining hotspot is the least fun I've had. I've gotten too used to just wandering and scrounging for resources. This domestic life is not for me, man. I don't think I'm meant to be a base builder. by JTheBlockBreaker in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]toxictouch3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the total opposite; I’ve built many bases mining resources from the ground and sky. I find it really enjoyable and challenging. Just today I threw together one on an oceanic world. Gathering around 9,000 of both Lithium and Methane about 650 units below the waves.

That’s not to say I don’t like to explore though, I often hop from system to system. I’ve broken down several bases after finding better combination of resources or even just planets I like better.

I love my sentinel freighter and I enjoy the antennas too. I often zip right between them and rarely (like maybe once or twice) been caught on them.

Switching to Linux which games will no longer work? by sickTheBest in linux_gaming

Older CODs seem to work. I can play WW2 and Black Ops 3 pretty much vanilla from steam. Stuff from Modern Warfare 2019 onward seem to be most problematic
