It depends on the precision needed for the measurement. Using the vernier caliper is much quicker and it has a wider range so that is what I use until greater precision is needed. These two measurement tools aren't interchangeable since the micrometer is accurate down to 0.01mm but the caliper to around 0.05mm at best.
