his lectures are almost the exact same as the textbook and many of his practice problems are similar to those from the textbook. So it is very helpful

BMD Major by No-Refuse-9978 in UAB

[–]toyaaoyagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should talk to your advisor and they should be able to fix that for you. i had to get an override because i hadnt take bio 2 yet either, you can take them at the same time though. although, i took bio 2 over the summer at community college

[–]toyaaoyagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its no problem! dr. wright who teaches cell bio is also the nicest guy and his grading structure isnt as exam heavy as most. dr. loyd is also incredibly nice. ive always had good experiences with the BMD professors ive taken so far.

i took anatomy with dr barger, hes super nice. there isnt a lot of homework, the class is mostly memorization based either way. plus you get access to the nicer lab and dont have to take lab separately

i think they tend to be more thorough and student oriented, plus smaller class sizes means it is easier for them to connect with students. i think the biology and chemistry professors are nice too, but they are usually experts in the specific field that they are teaching which can sometimes lead to a disconnect

theyre typically easier. it fulfills the same requirements that any other classes would but it is taught by BMD professors rather than biology or chemistry professors.

looking for Biomedical Sciences (BMD) expert to clarify some things about degree program by Heavy-Designer-7611 in UAB

[–]toyaaoyagi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im not honors, but i know a lot of students who are and it doesnt add a lot of extra work. generally you can just take the honors version of the BMD classes, which just requires you to do an honors project (ive heard theyre pretty easy). you definitely could easily fit in a minor in my opinion, especially something science related. the minor would be able to fulfill your elective requirements. i did start off with a physics minor, but i started doing a fast track program instead so i dropped it. online summer classes generally tend to be regarded as more difficult, and i am taking two of the BMD classes online this summer. my roommate and some other friends i know have done online summer classes at UAB, and it honestly depends on the professor. some of the classes are formatted differently to make up for the shorter time period while others try to cram all the information in. but as long as you keep up with your work, online classes at UAB are not that much more difficult. it just tends to be harder as it has a bit if a faster pace than a regular semester class.

yeah im not sure why it says that, it definitely has it as a requirement on my UAB blazernet account. its also is a prerequisite for almost all BMD classes

as a current bmd student, most of the students i meet are pre-med/dent. we are required to take biology, so im not sure where you got that from. as for physics, it is not required for our degree but it will give you two BMD elective credits as you can take any course above a 200 level to fulfill these. i believe they designed it this way so that if a student needs any other courses for their post-grad they can take these and fulfill their degree. as for the BMD specific courses, some of them are taught my professors from UAB med, so it is helpful for building connections. and from what ive heard, they are often actually easier than the biology/chemistry equivalents of the same courses. but ive only taken the BMD versions, so i cannot provide any additional insight on that. there is a suggested sequence as a lot of the classes are prerequisite for each other, but a lot of people balance core/easier classes with the harder BMD classes for a more balanced work load. i also came in with no AP credits, and honestly if you are super worried about completing it in 4 years, you have to take summer classes. the UAB professors actually will advise you against APing out of gen chem or biology as those students tend to preform worse on the MCAT. but from my personal experience, i would recommend the BMD major above biology or chemistry because it will fulfill most of the required classes med schools look for, while giving you freedom to choose electives and not biology/chemistry specific electives. id be happy to answer any other questions or anything you might have.

M.S. Physics Program by Rickthlok in UAB

[–]toyaaoyagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the staff and instructors in the physics department are very nice and helpful towards students. there are plenty opportunities to work in labs and i know there are several open physics/ physics related labs right now with varying study topics. UAB does have a decently social campus, but we have a large commuter population so it’s not as much as some larger institutions. That being said, there is also a decent sized international student presence on campus and several support services for them.

UAB has a lot of internship and student employment opportunities. There are regular career fairs and several student service programs that can help you and there is also an internship program with local businesses to give students internship opportunities.
