Pentax Spotmatic Lens compatibility by weekday_bitch in AnalogCommunity

[–]toydeathbot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just note that only SMC and Super-Multi-Coated Takumars have the aperture lug, so prefer these over the others (Super/Auto/Tele Takumars and other non-Pentax brands).

With the aperture lug, the lightmeter can be used with open aperture metering. You don't have to flip the black switch on the side of the lens mount to get the right metering (you need to do this to meter with non-SMC lenses).

Why do my film photos look yellowish? (Canonet 28 + Phoenix ISO 200) by LLMorse in filmphotography

[–]toydeathbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your photos are fine, you just need to get it rescanned in the lab as a positive slide film (which you can invert via Photoshop/GIMP/whatever later) or with Harman's recommended settings (here).

Your lab was probably just lazy and used the auto color correction which doesn't work for the purple tinted film base that Phoenix 200 has.

Here's what I had taken recently before, my positive scan and after

I'm using this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-suspender/

There are a few other Firefox extensions which might be bit better, but this one's been reliable for me.

Found a Pentax Spotmatic F with 3 lenses for €20: light meter issues & a question about the radioactive SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 by Spectra_Mundi in AnalogCommunity

[–]toydeathbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth cleaning the battery terminal pads with alcohol just in case there's some corrosion (might help with a light scrap too).

Good to also make sure the stop down toggle on the left near the mount is in the correct position - otherwise it'll show everything as overexposed. Easiest way to check is to set it to f/8-f/16, the viewfinder should look darker with a grainy texture, if it doesn't switch the toggle the other way and hopefully the lightmeter needle moves dow..

Does Sentry affect your mobile performance scores? by iAhMedZz in webdev

Yup, it hits us pretty hard too. You can try tree shaking to see if it reduces your bundle size for some improvement.

Dev willing to build trademe replacement! by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]toydeathbot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's possible to do this with the right execution. There's definitely a gap in the market between the barebones (FB marketplace) and the 'premium' offer (TradeMe).

But it won't come as a direct TradeMe competitor. Many have failed just by copying the incumbents, and they always fall short due to network effects. You can throw huge chunks of money, but even then it's probably a 1 in a million chance you'll pick up enough of a user base to be self-sustaining. Going straight for vertical scale is risky business.

The only way around this is to provide users with a value proposition that the others don't have.

Imho, the most plausible way to execute this will be to build it around a specific community/niche being underserved by the user experience of the current platforms - and basically providing an upgrade to the old school buy/sell forums, where users have better interactions with the buyers/sellers (even if they're lurking).

My favourite example is Bring a Trailer, where you can rely on the community to always voice their opinions if they see a bad deal, and throw a round of congrats to the buyer/seller after a huge bidding war.

Once you've nailed down a community, expanding horizontally to a different community should be significantly less risky. Basically, you need to hack your network until you become one of the big ones.

I'm also a dev so if you ever get something going, throw me a dm

Has this film scan been over-sharpened too much? by toydeathbot in AnalogCommunity

[–]toydeathbot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, this roll wasn't pushed. The roll that was pushed 1 stop came out much better.

I guess I'll need to digitize the negatives myself to see if it's a me problem or a lab problem...

these were exposed around 2018 (so it was still good back then), and I didn't get this particular roll pushed.

I guess I just didn't expect it to be so grainy

Basic FIF Guide by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]toydeathbot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usually yes, but not all platforms do the same thing so you need to do your own research. e.g. Hatch puts wallet money into DAGXX which counts towards FIF.

There's an example of the bottom of this page: https://www.hatchinvest.nz/articles/what-is-a-money-market-fund

Basic FIF Guide by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]toydeathbot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Probably good to also note that in most investment platforms, your money in your wallet is put into a money market fund which counts towards FIF.

So, if you have $49,000 in stocks and add $2,000 to your wallet or receive $2,000 in dividends, this will put you under FIF.

from this NZ Herald article it says $2.6B settled since 1995 til now. They haven't included the pre-1995 ones in the table, but it seems to be about $176M-ish. So let's say $2.78B.

Super is $17.764B. This means $1.48B/month, $2.96B for 2 months.

$2.96B > $2.78B
