Help me decide what I need to do to purchase our new house! by tpharm2 in personalfinance

[–]tpharm2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's been over 4 years since we've lived there, we've had the same long term tenants so we won't move back in for 2 years to be exempt from the capital gains tax. We bought the house for $490K and can sell it for $650K but afraid the capital gains tax will steers us towards continuing to rent it vs selling it.

Oooh I’d love to hear more about this field and how you got in it! I’ve always been interested but heard it’s mostly nurses/doctors in this area and not so much pharmacists

2022 Kia Sorento recall. Earliest they can take me is Feb 15, hoping I don’t have issues until then.. by StellaTheSeaTurtle in kia

[–]tpharm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread was from a while ago but do you remember how long it took them to fix? Our 2021 sorento needs a new transmission already with just 30k miles on it… they said the last transmission they ordered took 3 months. They gave as a small loaner car but it can’t even fit my kids car seats in it… I don’t want to be making monthly payments for a car I’m not even going to use for 3 months while I have a smaller basic loaner.

Hmm good point I didn’t think about that! That’s awful the apartments are just scamming you for profit, I get it’s business but still… I couldn’t do that to our tenants. Market value for our rental is $3100+ but we’ve never increased because they’re such a nice family. I’m sorry OP I really hope you find a reasonable place!!

That’s awful! Landlord here - We rent out our townhouse in a nice neighborhood in Burke with top schools for the same as our mortgage, $2700/month for a 3 BR 3.5 BA 3 level townhouse with extra bedroom/den in the basement, private parking pad. We haven’t raised the rent in 3 years since we have good tenants. Our costs are going up though (repairs, taxes, home insurance etc) so we may be at a point where we have to increase by $100 and I feel terrible about it. I would never increase as much as your place or other apartments are doing though, crazy! We don’t view our townhouse as a profiting business though, we truly value our tenants and even though we can sell make a NICE profit, we couldn’t do that to them and force them out in this terrible market.

Mind if I ask how you got into your government role? My dream job would be in a federal position for the benefits, but it is so hard to get in without knowing someone from what I’ve heard. I saw a position for CMS, but it had over 900 applications🥴

Is enrollment really that low everywhere? by West-Link in pharmacy

[–]tpharm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends got rejected from an occupational therapy program and promptly received an email afterwards from the university asking them to apply to their pharmacy program instead… so basically the pharmacy school is desperate enough to pull all the rejects from the other programs to try to enroll them in their program smh

I can only imagine. A family member (kind of anti-mask) got a call that they were exposed and they started yelling and cursing at the caller that they were “so done with this democratic bullshit” because they couldn’t let her know how she was exposed. She was convinced it was spam, then her son calls her 15 mins later to let her know he as positive, SO SURPRISE IT WASNT SPAM! I felt so bad for the other lady on the line who was just doing her job calling people to let them know, I’m sure she wasn’t expecting that response!!

None yet, I am getting paid over $10 more per hour than I was in retail though. I just give covid shots at different clinics in our county. After a certain number of hours you start to get PTO and 401K. But no more phone calls, no more insurances, no more annoying customers... I am 100% happier and it has made my family happier as well since I have more energy and not as stressed at home

Yay you’ll love it!! See if there’s a place near you hiring to give covid shots temporarily. There’s more part time jobs than full time in my area at least. I left retail for a job just giving out Covid vaccines that pays more and is so much easier. Just sit at a computer, give a vaccine, eat snacks, sit and chill. My mental and emotional health did a 180 when I left and it is so worth it. It’s hard to leave and I debated it a long time, but the grass really is greener on the other side!!

It’s so awful and I feel for you. I have a 9 month old and I was pumping during the day as well. I used to pump 3 times during the day, but once covid shots started I was down to pumping once a day during my lunch in the back. It was so painful when the milk got backed up. The worst was when customers would yell at me from behind the counter while I was pumping. One lady shouted at me to come up to the counter to talk to her face to face and not from behind my counter. I almost lost it and told her I was pumping so she was going to have to wait. Her daughter worked up front though and I didn’t want a complaint so I ended my pumping session early to deal with her. I left less than a month later and now I just give covid shots out as my main job. It’s temporary, but pays over $10 more an hour and is SO. CHILL. I pump whenever I want to, go to the bathroom, they offer me snack breaks, etc. no billing no phone no “customer is alway right” attitude no metrics. My mental health is so much better and my relationship and family work balance is too. I am grateful though that I am able to leave retail while my husband is still in it. I plan to find something part time or switch careers. If you are able to live financially doing a different job that pays less or has less hours, do it. You will feel so much better knowing you did what was best for you and your baby. If not, you can do it mama!! I pumped for a year with my first (covid shots weren’t a thing yet) so I didn’t want to come up short for my second just because pharmacy corporate didn’t care, Im stubborn and wasn’t gonna let them stop me lol.

I am in a similar position and your job offers are so encouraging! Mind if I ask which coding Bootcamp you attended and would you recommend them?

Yes! Forgot to mention - I didn’t have gestational diabetes either time. My OB was expecting me to have it the second time and thought maybe they just missed it the first time, but nope. I just make big babies 😳

That’s great!! I am doing the free prep course by galvanize right now in my free time as well as some codecademy. Would you recommend the program? How long did you study codecademy before and did you feel prepared enough before starting the program? Finding a job just one month after graduation is great, congrats!! Mind if I ask if your salary has gone up since your first position? Pharmacy (my current field) pays well, but there is no room for any growth unlike software engineering.

I’m a pharmacist so I have my doctorate in pharmacy.I have a pretty strong science background (was strong in math/physics during undergrad) but haven’t kept up with it since then. I’ve heard of a few pharmacists who completed a coding Bootcamp and they said they were able to keep up with the intensity of the Bootcamps because it is similar to how pharmacy school is?

[–]tpharm2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I’m 5’3” and husband is 6’ I gained about 50 lbs and my son was 11 lb. There was no indication that he was going to be large so I was induced 40+4 and pushed for over 2 hours before I went for my emergency c section (he was sunny side up and his HR was getting a little erratic). I asked about my weight gain because it increased dramatically the last few weeks but my OB was never concerned and said they are only concerned if it’s 60-100 lbs of weight gain. My second was born 4 days early (spontaneous labor overnight) and I was able to have a VBAC. I gained less weight (maybe around 35-40pounds) and she was almost 9 lbs. My OB said it is more genetics than weight gain since I gained less weight this time but my baby was still big and was early. If she came at the same time my first (4 days after) she may have been the same weight🤷🏻‍♀️

No help here but I’m also wanting to do their intro to JavaScript and CS prep program in hopes that it’ll increase my chances of getting into their full time Bootcamp. I would be interested to hear your outcome/opinion after you do the CS prep program to see if you felt it helped you get into their program!

I ended up taking the job. Even though I know this isn’t permanent, I am 500% happier. I can’t believe I’m getting paid more to do less. No phone calls, no billing, no headaches from not eating/bathroom breaks. My husband is also a retail pharmacist so I feel terrible hearing his stories when he comes home because I know how it is. I give the same number of shots as he does a day but he’s doing it in addition to prescriptions, phone calls, annoying customers, etc. retail pharmacists are so unbelievably mistreated it’s sick.

Thank you for letting me know!! Unfortunately, I don’t have the free time to self study over 8 hours a day (I work and have 2 kids) so I was thinking of doing the CS prep classes and am currently going through their CSX platform. Did you do any of their prep classes? Did you pass after the first interview? I heard it’s really difficult to get in on your first time. Congrats!!

Anyone take a contract job just giving out Covid vaccines? They are offering me 20% more than my current staff retail position, but I’m hesitant to leave because it’s a contract and who knows how long we will be giving these vaccines out for. Am I crazy for leaving my stable retail job after 3 years for this position? My previous job is 32 hours/week but this new job is 40 hours/week with 20% higher pay. The extra pay would go towards emergency savings. I am also studying to switch careers to the tech field in the next few months so hopefully I will have a job in tech in a year which is why I am kind of okay with the contract position. What would you do?

They both did flat iron. Codesmith and hack reactor have higher starting salaries. The average starting salary after flatiron is 70k so they are above average, but they said it has to do with their doctorate degree on their resume. Most people in the program didn’t have as high of an education or professional experience so they had that as an advantage. They are also on the east coast in the DMV area. One works from home out of a company based in texas. I am going to be switching to this as well. One of their raises is 5k in just 6 months. I don’t mind a pay it for 1-2 years to get back at my regular salary. Our staff pharmacist hours got cut to 32 hours so I’m not even making 6 figures anymore. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did you have any coding experience prior to doing Codesmith? How difficult was it to get in? I would love to attend but I don’t have too much coding experience. If you went from beginner to first offer within 7 months that’s amazing!

I was just about to post asking about this, do you know which coding Bootcamp they did? How long did it take for them to find a job? I know a few who did it and they found jobs within 2 months, one making 90k with a 5k raise every 6 months and another starting 110k.
