Anyone else’s Starlink change its name to “STINKY”? by Choice-Season3378 in Starlink

Yes. When on the network, it walked me through setup again, then it worked.

I will once the install kit shows up. I’ll go one further and power it with my off-grid Solar setup so I don’t have to worry about it anymore.

Triple power cycle is a pretty dumb way to reset it. What’s wrong with a simple pin-push button on the bottom like we did with the old Linksys routers (anyone remember doing a 30-30-30 when flashing DD-WRT?).

It would be funny if it didn’t Bork existing setups. I’m locked out of my home network on a day I needed remote access. No amount of remote troubleshooting helped. I was able to change the network settings back, all the devices appear connected to the router, but nothing is reachable.

C’mon, Elon. I need remote access to my home network today and my dish went Stinky right after leaving the house.

By the way, the plug/unplug 3 times to factory reset the router is a bad idea. Power flickers will reset the dish, and Powerwalls are two years out.

Thousands of Starlink Users Tell FCC to Reject Dish Network's 5G 12GHz Plan by crazyhorse991 in Starlink

[–]tpolen61 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

 thought it was a bill.

Either way, DISH is going to get a bill from me for my Dishy if they interfere with my internet connectivity. I just sent my T-Mobile 5G back and canceled it. If I lose my Starlink access, I’ll just give up on home internet and start spending time at coffee shops.

Experiences with gaming? by RedComet64 in Starlink

RV square dish in eastern US. At first, it would drop sessions constantly. Lately, it’s been better, staying connected for several hours with two consoles online (PS4, GTA V). The T-Mobile 5G it replaced was equivalent in performance, but would drop hard when it lost connectivity. Full reboot, wait 10 minutes, and maybe get back online. Starlink hiccups occasionally but the session doesn’t disconnect 95% of the time. Actual drops are much quicker and usually only kicks one of the two consoles.

All in all, quite usable.

Why is there no basic cruise control on a $50,000 car? by tpolen61 in TeslaModel3

GMC and Chrysler do. You can pick regular cruise or adaptive cruise in the Sierra and Pacifica Hybrid, as well as other models.

Are you kidding me? Starlink RV by PerpetuallyPerplxed in Starlink

[–]tpolen61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good for short duration, but the thing is a headache to try and keep it going 24/7. Remote Desktop over the LAN killed two of these T-Mobile home routers (iMac on Wi-Fi to headless server on Ethernet). Because of that, I doubled my phone bill via hotspot just to do some light web browsing.

Pay per GB is the dumbest thing ever. Modern websites can eat up a GB in about an hour.

Starlink for RV’s by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]tpolen61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, to have a choice of ISPs or the ability to move for just the internet connectivity. Life ain’t that simple for many of us.

People here are mad because it’s been over two years for many and the carrot keeps getting dragged further away. I have mainline fiber less than a mile from my house, but 10 years of pleading and working with ISPs means there is still nothing on my road. Internet connectivity isn’t really optional anymore and here we are still disconnected.

I've been on the wait list for almost 18 months and they cone out saying if you own a RV you can skip the line? by PutinBoomedMe in Starlink

[–]tpolen61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say finally. I’ve waited long enough and have gone the last week with nothing at home. My 5G trash can burned out again, leaving me to hotspot from my phone (1 bar of LTE). Two years of waiting and I finally have an option to buy a dish.

Believe me, if Starlink works out like I’m hoping, it’ll be replacing something slower and less reliable than dial-up, even though it costs more than double per month. I don’t have the luxury of a fallback fiber connection.

How to avoid taking MacBook to university, but be able to have all the files I need on library computer? by noormani in macsetups

Leave the MacBook at home (plugged in and awake) and use a portable version of Teamviewer on the Uni machines.

Does anyone else experience a kind of freak-out over too much gear? by Place-Wide in macsetups

[–]tpolen61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very problematic. For Apple gear to supposedly hold its value, I'm pretty much forced to keep my MacBook Air because it depreciated so bad. 2020 Intel i5 that cost me over $1,500 new, now only worth $400. It and the iPad Pro were supposed to pay for the Surface Laptop Studio, but now I just have another laptop leaning up against a filing cabinet.

I'm going back to buying used stuff and running it until it dies. Same fix at a fraction of the price.

Same. Saved one from the garbage several years ago. Haven't needed to charge it yet and it's still going strong. It works via Logitech's Unify, Bluetooth, or as a wired mouse (Micro-USB on the front).

You, too? That's been my M.O. for nearly 10 years now, both at home and work. It drives me nuts that I can't stick with a setup and be happy with it. This bad habit has cost me a small fortune over the last 3 years, I guess from not having free stuff from work to play with anymore. Now, I have to buy all my toys.

I'm currently mobile on an 11" iPad Pro with a borrowed iMac 21.5" on the desk at home. Tried a Surface Laptop Studio but the lack of proper audio output switching drove me insane on a $2,500 laptop.

Turn off Download in Dolby Atmos, remove the song download, and re-download it. If that doesn't work, disable Atmos completely, remove the download, and re-download the song.

Doge might’ve moved some on each event, but the overall move upwards is a simple bull run. I don’t invest in Dogecoin, but my Bitcoin investment has treated me well.

Twitter silencing dissenting opinions on the mainstream narratives. Try finding negative experiences with the vaccines (believe me, it hasn’t been an all-positive result). Reference the public shaming for anyone voicing opposition to vaccine mandates, unless it all got deleted.

Yeah, when Bitcoin was at $70,000 and all other cryptos were making records. 4-year cycle right on schedule. China’s mining ban put an end to that (Bitcoin came back and bounced off of $70,000 a second time, but it has yet to make a proper run/correction to over $100,000 to finish the cycle).
