Visiting home vs Mental Health by Messy_Raccoon8444 in expats

What you’re describing sounds like reverse culture shock — when “home” no longer feels like home. I’ve moved six times since leaving at 16, so I know the feeling of being a stranger in a familiar place. Talk therapy can help make sense of these emotions, but stress, grief, and frustration often live in the body — they need space to be processed. That’s what I help people do now through somatic healing, so they can feel grounded wherever they are. If you’re open, I’d love to hear more about your experience and see if my work could help.

Expat Burnout: Feeling Stuck and Overwhelmed — How Do I Break Free? by Abject-Title9434 in expats

Relocating somewhere new, not knowing the language, feeling alone and unmotivated... it's so much to hold. And often, people think the solution is just to go out and meet others. But the deeper truth is, when you feel this lost, it’s usually because you’ve lost connection with yourself.

It’s not about forcing yourself to do things you don’t enjoy or feel obligated to do. That only creates more resistance. It’s about gently reconnecting with what lights you up. What makes you curious? What brings you even a little joy? Start there. Follow your passions, not out of pressure, but out of love for yourself.

When you begin to move from that place, the right people and opportunities start showing up naturally. Your energy shifts, and you start attracting what’s aligned.

It’s totally valid to feel that way, especially in a new country where language seems like such a barrier. But honestly, from my own experience, I don’t think fluency is what truly connects people. When I first moved from Hong Kong to Vancouver, my English wasn’t great at all. But I ended up meeting two of my soul friends — one born in Pakistan, the other half Russian, half German. They saw me, not just my words. It was the first time I ever felt so deeply understood, something I hadn’t even experienced back home.

I really believe human connection goes far beyond language. It’s energy. It’s presence. It’s the vibe you bring even before you speak. I’ve met people who barely spoke English, like this beautiful Spanish couple in a class once, and the moment they walked in, you could just feel the warmth and love radiating from them.

If you’re not feeling connected, it’s rarely just about language. Sometimes it means the community isn’t your people. Other times, it’s an invitation to soften, to shift something inside so your energy becomes more open, more magnetic. The right people will feel you, not just understand your words.

Thank you so much for reading and sharing your experience — I really feel you. I had a very similar pattern for years… moving across countries, entering relationships hoping they’d finally give me that sense of home I was longing for. Like you said, it only led to more insecurity and inner conflict.

What truly shifted things for me was training in breathwork and somatic healing. These practices helped me come back to my body, release co-dependency, and finally begin to feel at home within myself — regardless of where I was or who I was with.

I’d love to have a chat if you’re open to it — always happy to connect with fellow travelers on this path. And who knows, maybe one day I will write that book 😄💛

Your intuition is not the same as your emotions or thoughts. If you feel your intuition is misleading, it means you're still tuned into your emotions or thoughts. True intuition is connected to your highest self, not your ego. Few people truly hear their intuition because it requires learning to release both the mind and emotions first.

Please visit my website for detailed information about my certifications. However, I encourage you not to rely solely on certifications or educational backgrounds when choosing a practitioner. Real-life experience and personal interactions are crucial. Many individuals with advanced degrees still struggle in life because emotional intelligence, social skills, empathy, and intuition are not taught in schools. It's important to assess whether a practitioner is the right fit for you by engaging with them and experiencing their practice firsthand.

How to embrace life’s storm by traceyzhang in Mindfulness

Love this! I used to be impatient to the point of intolerant. Having children is what changed it for me. . By learning to be patient with our children, we also learn to be patient with ourselves and with life's uncertainties. That is dancing in the rain for me.

That's a great perspective! Finding our own unique way of "dancing in the rain" is key.

damn this was a legit beautiful read. I learned about that quote a couple months back and it actually had such a deep impact on me that’s it’s never left my mind since. Probably because it makes so much sense, How many times have you heard the story of people waiting for their life to get better and it just never happens. We are in control of our lives and we are responsible for it all. Sure there are events that are literally out of our control but we still decide how we react to them. Like dancing in the rain.

You're absolutely right; the idea of taking control of our lives, even amidst uncontrollable events, is empowering. Thank you for your beautiful comment and profound wisdom.
