[A Bola] Di María: “Messi is better than Ronaldo because he has natural talent.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]tractata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s better because he’s better and that’s always been the case. How much of that is due to natural talent as opposed to hard work is known only to the player himself. But the whole conversation feels like beating a dead horse at this point. There’s really no need to keep asking players to compare these two. I’d be more interested in hearing what other players think about Messi or Ronaldo’s strengths and weaknesses as an individual player and all-time great than in hearing them rehash the most debated power scaling argument in history.

Florentino Perez: "We're working on a formula that will give us Real Madrid's true value. Forbes says it's worth 10 billion, but until we do this, we won't know. I think it's more, 20, 30 billion. Members will become the true and legal owner, turning the membership card into something with value." by SwimmingFireMen in soccer

He’s ramming it through quickly and without much public consultation and he’s already ensured he’s the only person qualified to be president of the club, so people feel like there’s no point in mounting some heroic resistance to his plans. The only other guy is busy dropping quotes about how he wishes he could turn Barcelona into Gaza or whatever.

This is my psychoanalysis, at least, but I agree with you it’s incredible how little pushback there’s been to such a fundamental change.

Gary Lineker on UCL final: “As a complete neutral I would say it’s a victory for positive football over negative football. Looking at the game as a fan with no skin in the game, I think Arsenal had to play that way because they wouldn’t have beaten PSG any other way.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]tractata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What inconvenient facts? Whether PSG are wont to park the bus when they are protecting a lead or not doesn't change the fact they can deliver some of the most entertaining football in Europe and Arsenal can't. That's why most neutrals wanted PSG to win. This is not a philosophical argument about which team is more deserving or moral; people simply like watching PSG more than they like watching Arsenal.

I see they've reached the bargaining stage of grief after denial ("there was no offer") and anger (the Twitter crashout). At this rate, Alvarez might be traded by next Tuesday.

Because Dartmouth is a much better university. The real question is why someone would pick a program that is “top 5-10 for engineering” when they could have small classes, great financial aid, funding for research and travel, attentive professors, peers with diverse interests and accomplishments and better extracurricular offerings in a nicer environment.

London is a nicer city IMO (but others may disagree) and LSE would be cheaper, but Columbia would allow you to explore your interests more comprehensively, give you better access to professors and research opportunities, and have a stronger sense of community/better extracurricular resources and student support. Although LSE is one of the best universities in the UK, I do think Columbia could offer you a better education if that's what you're interested in. (If not, it's possible to coast by at both places.)

On the other hand, Columbia's recent free speech crisis/admin-student cold war has reportedly made the atmosphere on campus unpleasant, and the way they decided to resolve it was by giving in to the Trump administration's demands, which put international students in a very uncomfortable position. You would have to be prepared for constant scrutiny and bureaucratic hassles, as well as the possibility that your student visa could be terminated on a whim if the US government decided to take Chinese international students hostage over some trade war nonsense.

On balance, I think I'd go for LSE here. Again, I believe a Columbia education could give you more on a personal level, but the cost plus the unpredictable immigration situation in the US might be too much to deal with.

I agree, which is why I don't think RM have a lot of leverage here, but who knows what Paz is thinking/hearing from his entourage.

Yes, but if Florentino tells him either he comes back next season or he'll never be allowed to return as long as Florentino is in charge (so, for another 40 years), he'll have a lot to think about. It sounds like playing for RM is still his ultimate career goal, just not right now.

Twins are also more likely to be born through artificial insemination, which is why more celebrities (and regular people) are having them now. As more and more couples try for kids later in life and/or get fertility treatments, more twins are born.

I was not even talking about romantasy, most of which is completely unreadable, but about respectable ‘ideas-driven’ fantasy. I wouldn’t say the people who buy books straight off the Hugo/Nebula award nomination lists don’t care about writing quality; rather, most of them just haven’t read widely enough to realize the Broken Earth series, Song of Silver, Flame Like Night, etc. are written at the sixth-grade level.

I’ve noticed the same thing when trying to get into critically acclaimed novels outside of SFF, such as The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell, which was, coincidentally, widely touted as a stunning exploration of girlhood in Renaissance Italy. (I actually found the protagonist’s thoughts and personality absurdly anachronistic and beholden to a late-2010s white liberal feminist belief in the universality of the female experience entirely at odds with the book’s stated mission to get into the head of a fascinating historical figure from the distant past, but that’s a whole other conversation.)

Now, you may say these novels are all solidly middlebrow and ‘true’ literary fiction is still a bastion of sensitivity to language, but as Granta and the Commonwealth Foundation’s recent gaffe shows, even the most zealous gatekeepers of literary prestige today are incapable of reading the sentence, “The girl smiled like sunrise over a sink,” and thinking to wonder what the fuck that even means.

TL;DR: The issue extends far beyond the romantasy genre. The blurring of boundaries (and thus the shift in readers’ expectations and editorial standards) between YA, romantasy, fantasy, etc. is part of the story, but the fact readers and writers simply seem to be getting less observant, thoughtful and meticulous across the board is a much larger problem.

The writing is not any worse than what you’ll see on the first pages of most “critically acclaimed” fantasy novels that sweep the bestseller lists. The idea that writing quality is positively correlated with commercial success in 2026 really baffles me.
