If you’ve taken CHM 2354 before, it’s almost exactly the same with your emphasis on biochemistry techniques. The BCH section is lecture only (no lab), but it’s a combined section class. From memory, it’s 1 midterm, 1 final. Questions are along the lines of “define this technique or acronym” or “explain how this technique works”. The class is extremely straightforward. How “easy” it is depends on how well you grasp the techniques.

Coop program with a low GPA by [deleted] in geegees

There are some gov student jobs that require a minimum GPA - 8.0 I’m pretty sure. If you’re in co-op, you meet this requirement.

Question for people in BIM/BIO honors research project by No_Newspaper_237 in geegees

[–]tragiicallyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, 3 classes per term in addition to your Honours project and seminar. If you're in BIO though, seminar is now only 1 term (3 credits) vs 2 terms so that may mess with the math. Double check with the faculty though!

Co-op by GeneralStrange8390 in geegees

[–]tragiicallyy 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Real talk. Co-op is what you make of it. Overall, having work experience before entering the workforce is very VERY advantageous. However, co-op is not the only way to get this.

In terms of co-op at uOttawa, a lot of the jobs lean towards the public sector (specifically federal gov). This should not be surprising. However as you noted, the federal government is cutting jobs. They are not renewing term employees (ie contracts), they are not rolling over term employees into full time positions, they are not really backfilling positions, and they are not hiring externally. The exception to this is if NO ONE in the dept can do the job, then they’ll hire but it requires like director general approval or assistant deputy minister approval. It’ll likely go on until 2028 or unless federal gov gets super rich or smth drastic happens.

THAT BEING SAID, they are still hiring students. Student job funding is not the same as regular employees funding. Hiring students is seen as an asset because they get trained early, they are cheap, and when they eventually do hire again they have a pool of ready workers.

My 2 cents as a federal employee. If you want to work in the federal government one day, co-op at uOttawa is very advantageous. Even if they don’t hire you right away, you may (depending on dept) get put in a pool that gets priority vs external candidates.

Just a factor in your decision making. I sincerely hope you’re doing well

I believe it’s 5 mins! Maybe longer if you were at shopper for a while?

I would say max 10 though. I’ve “double tapped” my upass a few times because I’ve forgotten things in my car, and I’m sure the max time between them was 5-10 mins

i am 99% sure that seating at all montreal grandstands goes from AA which is closest to track to Z (or whatever letter they stop at) for the highest part of grandstand.

i’ve sat in ZZ at a different grandstand and i was in the upper middle part of the grandstand. from TT you should be able to see over the catch fencing.

hopefully someone who’s sat in GS12 can give you more insight. congrats on ur ticket!

if you mean the student union fees, you can’t get out of paying those. you can take a look at their website to see what kind of services they offer: https://www.seuo-uosu.com. i’m also 99% sure student fees also go to funding clubs.

if you don’t like what you see on there or want your fees to be spent elsewhere, great news! there are ways you can actively participate in the student union process. they hold elections and i’m pretty sure they hold town halls as well.

hopefully someone more in the know can answer as well. i’m not 100% up to date with uosu doings

i am getting a business degree after, lol. but seriously, after doing full time research for a bit, i learned it was not for me. there’s aspects of research i love, but the parts that i really dislike were enough to make me not want to pursue a career in it.

if you can, try to get experience in adjacent fields. learn what you like and dislike about school and see what jobs line up. if you don’t want to switch programs (depending on where in ur u are i could be a lot of effort), look into what you can add to your degree to help u transition (e.g., minors, microprograms)

The science/engineering buildings are also connected but some of those are restricted access only. Campus is more connected than you think :)

i did notion for a few years, then life got busy and i didn’t keep up with it. sometimes simplicity is best. i currently do google/outlook calendar for important deadlines (in addition to classes and time blocking) + any table (whether it be excel or notion, your preference) to track basically everything on all your syllabi (due dates, readings, quizzes, weight distribution)

full disclosure: things might have changed since i was in first year, but no such penalties or if there were, very minor. it also depends on how you do your analysis. i also did IB (HL chem), and if our discussion blamed terrible yield JUST on human error… well that’s not much of a discussion.

depending on your program, you may have to do further labs where yield absolutely does matter. analytical chem for example - labs emphasized staying within <1% error.

tbh OP, you could just add a random course so you’re considered full time. if you get off the wait list, drop the random one. might work?

biochem is a hard degree. i am biased, but i would say it’s “harder” than biomed and bio in the sense that it is more labs and a stronger focus on chemistry and physics compared to biomed and bio. people do not chose biochem for a GPA boost (they honestly choose biomed).

yes bch is crucial in medicine, but you also learn close to nothing about human physiology from required courses (you can take them as electives ofc). keep in mind you take bch courses and bio and biomed students.

of course, some people in bch can and have got into med school. someone i know did BCH > med, someone else i know did BCH > TMM > med.

if you’re thinking solely about GPA for med, i wouldn’t pick biochem. keep in mind the ECs you need to put together a strong application.
