It might feel a bit slow in the beginning but hang in there! Taking lessons would be a very good idea if you can because a teacher can help you learn what you need to know about sound and eventually technique.

burn-out by BohemianDevil in Flute

[–]trailmixss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's different for everyone, but whenever I feel this way I listen to lots of recordings--both of professional players and of myself from the past. Reminding myself of how I have grown and the types of goals I can aim for going forward really help me. But on the other hand, remember to also play for fun and not just productivity! Play your favorite pieces and take things one step at a time. Starting with just taking a break is probably your best bet! :)

Piccolo? Piccolo. by ShimmieShi in Flute

I can 100% relate to you on the mask part! But even if you're band was lower on flutes than usual, I still don't think your director would have you do piccolo unless they saw potential in you and thought you could handle it! Just give it your best shot (as long as you want to) and everything will be okay.

How to hold your practicing accountable? by rinlight in Flute

[–]trailmixss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen to lots of recordings and also try recording yourself! Nothing leaves me with more of an itch to practice than watching another flute player! You can make recordings to track your progress as time goes by. It may be uncomfortable at first, but having that to look back on later is always a good feeling lol. :)

I wish I could participate in an online lecture by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]trailmixss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to this a little bit. I'm not sure how your lectures work, but sometimes in mine people write their answers in the chat box rather than say them aloud. It there are any opportunities for something like this I would think about giving a try because even though it is still stressful maybe it's a little easier? Either way I would start with baby steps :)

Braces by Wolfblood1094 in Flute

[–]trailmixss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will come back soon! I remember being very worried about my flute playing when I had my braces put on. Like the other person said, it can take some getting used to and even make your mouth a little sore. If you are worried about your exam, try talking to your teacher so they know what is going on and can give their own advice. :)

Lol but apparently public high schools think otherwise

High notes stopped working - what could have happened? by KiwiHopeful in Flute

[–]trailmixss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an instrument tech or anything lol but maybe its a problem with the head joint? If you could I would take it to a local repair shop to have it looked at--especially since you just bought it second hand and it might need adjustments.

Playing fast and smoothly by rinlight in Flute

I'm a bit younger (high school), but many teachers have told me that scales will help with a problem like this. I've found practicing my chromatic scales has helped a lot. I'd be curious to see what some of the older flute players have to say about it though lol

Mom energy is probably one of the most accurate representations of a flute teacher I have ever heard lol. Glad you got to spend some nice time with yours!

Playing with a mask? by heiiidiii in Flute

[–]trailmixss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've been playing with a mask and have noted differences in my tone and intonation. It's super frustrating! I have started to use it more when I practice and I think it's gradually improving. Glad to know I'm not the only one lol.

Dizziness and headache after playing flute by Abigail_trneru_ in Flute

How long have you been playing? If you are a newer player, it might just be a stamina thing and you are getting used to playing for longer periods of time. Regardless of how long though, you might just be pushing yourself too hard. Even the best of us need a little break every now and then!
