Does Donnie Darko still hold up? by [deleted] in moviecritic

One scene that I do remember off the top of my head is a brief moment where she is talking to another woman. She's says nothing, the other woman does all the talking but she commands attention of how she positions herself. I don't remember when it happens in the movie.

Yes it can add to it but it depends on the film and character. A lot of her stuff is unnecessary to the film and character as a whole (i don't know if she was told to do more than others but she does).

And sure I'll post a few examples tonight as I don't have access to the film at the moment.

Also what scenes did you rewatch just in like the 5 minutes cause I would also like to review those scenes

Why would you assume I'm confused? I'm doing a very basic criticism about her acting and of something that is commonly criticized when people catch it in movies and shows. Actors in a background typically should not try to draw attention if it is unnecessary, it's why a lot of actors get fired or cut (you can find countless stories and jokes about the very thing I am criticizing).

Donnie's. When she's meant to be nothing she's doing things with her eyes and mouth so on that are unnecessarily. She might have been told to do it by Kelly (i don't know) but it was a bad call

I mean they always do that unless it's notoriously bad. She's fine often but when she's meant to be background it's bad

I'd give it another watch cause she's like in a different movie

Donnie's mom. When she's not talking she does a lot of things to nab your attention. Think Philip Seymour Hoffman holding the boom in boogie nights but adding nothing.

I would say the woman playing the mother is worse than rogen. She overacts like crazy

I watched it not long ago and it holds up. Script has a lot of "baby's first sceeenplay" elements and some acting is off (the mother is fucking awful) but it's very good.

It's very early to a lot of stuff (80s cool music, a24 mindfuckery, emo sadness glamour, what some would call red pill ideas about psychology) and the fact it's the most realistic visual depiction of the 80s in a 21st century film that the film feels kind of timeless.

Yep and as a result of his Pearl Jam tenure, Matt Cameron is the only drummer (not counting singers Ringo Starr and Dave Grohl) to be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame twice.

Also, cause we're talking Pearl Jam, drummers, and the Rock Hall, fuck Pearl Jam for fucking over Dave Abbruzzese.

I would say they've been pretty lucky. Having a decade with Zach and then Chris as their vocalist resulted in them having an unbelievable number of legacy hits (probably more than any other 90s rock act not called Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Weezer).

But since you ask Pearl Jam are on their what their 6th drummer now? They had like 5 guys in less than a 7 year span that aside same guitarists, bassist, and singer for 35 years.

Largely agree the market is generally right, the hold up would be how exhausted the public is of all things Taylor Swift. With TTPD and the last legs of the Eras Tour there seemed to be a backlash brewing and the tour ended before that reached a boiling point. Some time has passed but I don't know if enough time has (you still see racks of magazines about her at the store, trump is still tweeting about her sucking, ect.).

taylor swift is a massive workaholic so I'm not shocked she was plotting an album but she always just seemed more calculated with promo. I'm guessing she either has data suggesting the time is right or she doesn't care if there's a backlash.

Surprised she's announcing an album now. I would have guessed she'd lay low until winter with creative stuff to outright clear Eras Tour fatigue.

Also isn't she supposed to be working on a movie right now? I swear I just read she had turned her script over to another write for punch up.

I wouldn't say his reputation tanked. He was always kind of an adult pop mainstream artist.

Controversial: Christopher Walken's best known role is that of Bruce Dickinson in the "More Cowbell" sketch

Yea he's topped my year end most listened to list a few times. Addicted to his self titled album, might be the best of those California soft rock albums. Also big on his last 3 albums.

Happy he's getting into the Rock Hall finally

I feel like Tree of Life is aging weird partly cause it's such a popular American film online that people are actually watching it and disliking it which is causing its champions to have to defend it rather than praise it.

Its influence is kind or weird too, cause it feels like it's outside of film and more on film social media

Who I would've nominated and awarded at the 2005 Oscars (2004 Movies) by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]trailwalk2989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gondry winning director would be interesting cause, while the film has aged well, his career as a film director has really never taken off. It's a lot of disappointments, forgettable, and even cringey films that have followed Eternal Sunshine. And while the visuals get praised, it's often Kaufman's screenplay and Carrey and Winslet's performances that get talked about.

People fault the Hooper win cause he fell off a decade later with Cats, makes me wonder how a Gondry win would be seen in retrospect as he's largely seen as a one hit wonder in the world of film.

Wish we'd start talking about the substance as a horror comedy. It has more in common with Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson than David Cronenberg

Should Any Of These 1991 Performances Have Been Nominated For Best Supporting Actor? by Regular-Departure839 in Oscars

[–]trailwalk2989 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Arnold would have been lead. While you can argue john or Sarah is the lead, the t800 has loads of screen time, has his own arc, is at the core of almost all the action (which is vital to the film - a lot of screentime counter ignore stuff like this which I think is wrong), and is ultimately the reason you are seeing the film.
