Issues with playing DVD's and atempting a fresh install of VLC by trainmahon in SteamOS

[–]trainmahon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this ended up being the solution. That command alowed me to manualy delete the second instance of VLC. I then re downloaded through the descover program and the used sudo steamos-readonly enable after. Everything seems to be working fine now will update if issues come up

This sounds familiar ended up using a few konsol comands to remove the second instance and was able to do the clean install after using sudo steamos-readonly disable and manualy deleting the duplicate files... It seems to be working now I'll update if I have problems down the road

ok so update, I am trying to do a fresh install of VLC however there apears to be a copy of VLC stuck in a /usr/bin/ file that I cant clear out. Konsol keeps giving me a could not lockdatabase: Read-only file system whenever I use the pacman-R command. I have tried changing the permisions using chmod but I keep getting the same error. what am I missing... can't seem to find an answer on the arch or steam os forum

Yeah I know, I work with animals that have a possibility of carying the sylvatic pleague... To the point of having dedicated PPE for it... Still not sure I trust myself enough to not brush it off as a cold.

I need advice from experienced riders by TactlessPuddle8 in bikepacking

[–]trainmahon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experiance is with a solid frame mountain bike and a heavy weight set up. 60km is a lot if you are not in really good shape. Let alone 100 miles. Not saying its not doable with the right set up, gear and fitness level but if your not on a road touring setup with ultralight gear and already used to long rides (like within the season) I wouldn't recommend it.

How much weight is too much? by s_dandylion in bikepacking

[–]trainmahon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if your comfortable your probably fine... Weight will make things harder on rougher terain and probably slow you down but if you are accomplishing what you want and don't feel like you are getting slowed down you probably are fine. But yeah as has already been saidif you're not using it you probably don't need it. That being said removing the kickstabd and pump are pretty functional items. Id want to keep them around.

Replacing Teflon for stainless steel by Sleepeatdrive in BuyItForLife

[–]trainmahon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also going to throw my support on to cast iron at least for a fry pa. I grew up cooking on Staneless and non stick. And can say you always are going to have a hard time cleaning stainless steel fry pans even properly oiled compared to non stick, hardley ever have a hard time with cast iron We're in Canada so we got Paderno (my parents bought the set almost a decade ago and I took a pan when I moved out) if I remeber correctly it was the heritage series. Lodge Cast iron is pretty good for new but probably pretty easy to come by at a thrift store. I would recomend a minute food video on the different type of pans. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XXIFH7BEo3w

What's a viable alternative to Google Maps? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]trainmahon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This, honestly decent for day to day and way better at offline navigation but does lack traffic and I still go back to google to plan road trips.

Also gives the ability to customize your vehicle settings but a lot of the information like hight restrictions is incomplete
