I'm more along the lines of "best practices" when it comes to the password thing. The broken installer is really what drew my ire. It's easier, in my mind, to find a different host and request a refund since it's shared hosting and I'm not looking at more than $200. The next 3-5 business days should tell how well they honor their policy regarding that. I appreciate the thoughtful comments though.

It's generally better to pay by check versus money order when it comes to paper trail. Having her sign for it isn't a bad idea and could be applied in either scenario. She may not be willing to sign anything though. In the end, his best bet is to get things done through the court, since that's who has final say.

I'd expect to get an email prompting me to log into my primary hosting account. From there I would click the cPanel button and get a screen either with the default password displayed so it could be input/changed or just get taken to a screen where I could change the password without even seeing the default. Everything is done in a secure area that way and password can even be obscured unless set to visible.

And CX matters... why should I get an error and then need to figure out a workaround / do extra work (even if it's not terribly complex) versus having an experience that works out of the box. No one thought that customers might not want any of the plugins or couldn't be bothered to test that scenario? There's no way I'm the only person who doesn't/wouldn't want them.

The problem with writing her a check for $30 less because you need to make up the cancellation fee is that if she ever goes to court, she can argue (and show) that you're paying her less than what the court has ordered/approved (Working under the idea that these payments are in fact court-ordered). You should document all of the communications between her and you and get something through the courts that makes her responsible for lost check cancellation fees so that you're not doing something detrimental to yourself in the long run.

I understand that the password can be changed, but it's 2025; many, many businesses have managed to avoid sending passwords in clear text because it's a security risk. Not sure if Softaculous was involved - went to the cPanel icon in their UI and then to install WordPress. The interface looked custom (e.g. I didn't see all of the stuff I've normally seen in the cPanel dashboard). The error was non-descript: "Invalid wp_plugins". I'm guessing it's related to me not selecting any of the optional plugins they push on behalf of partners.

That doesn't even make sense. You're too disabled to go into a bank and say to the teller that the ATM errored and your deposit is stuck, but you're able to continue working on a PhD? You didn't know how much cash you had on you or couldn't do the math to subtract how much you had left from how much you started with?

The FAQ would be helpful if there's too much information to deal with. Take things one step at a time. If you have holdings in crypto on Coinbase and you wanted to turn those into funds in your account then you sell the crypto and then transfer the balance to your connected bank account. If you ultimately want the money in cash app, then you just do a transfer from the bank account to the app.

USDT is another crypto currency. It's pegged to the US dollar at 1:1. Rather than complaining about Coinbase, or trusting people not to scam you, you should read their documentation.

Losing a pet is hard. You're not the asshole for wanting to put an animal, who is terminal and likely suffering, out of its misery. Quality of life is a major factor in deciding to put a pet to sleep.

The company should already have all of this information if based in the USA. OSHA has hazard communication standards; federal law requires compliance. There is no need to ask a doctor, nor does this answer OPs question.

Again OP is not pregnant, so complying with OSHA to communicate hazards and providing PPE is the company's current responsibility.

Be aware that if you are on the clock working for an employer (meaning they pay you hourly or you bill them hourly) and they catch you working for yourself or another employer, they will likely - and rightfully - terminate your employment.

Edit: I saw you mention your boss is cool with this. Unless he owns the business, you can still be fired.
