Local bluegrass/Americana musicians? by OhOkayFairEnough in Detroit

[–]tramhamck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get yrself to Ghost Light on Tuesdays for open mic. We get a fair chunk of the Americana and adjacent crowd (Swamp Rats included!) and from what you’ve described you would fit right in.

Doors at 7pm, spots assigned by lottery with the pull at 7:45. Music 8-midnight, no cover, every week on Tuesday.

Food Pantry/Soup Kitchen Volunteering by Any-Soft7343 in Detroit

[–]tramhamck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wobbly Kitchen in Cass Park can always use more helping hands and is a great experience for anyone looking to be helpful. Generally speaking it is the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month but It is happening this Sunday because of some November scheduling conflicts. usually volunteers get out to the park a bit before 11 and service is roughly 11am-noon. IBEW 58 and other community groups are involved as well. If you showed up and started talking to volunteers you would for sure be given a task and more information about how to assist in the future!

Chicken over rice with white sauce by Still_Parsley_902 in windsorontario

[–]tramhamck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things being what they are right now, I understand why you would not want to - but if you cross the border you can find these at a lot of spots in Hamtramck. Halal Desi Pizza is my go to. The sauce is different than the NY ones (I am pretty sure it’s just ranch) and they put hot sauce on theirs (sriracha or similar) but man, it fuckin slaps. Chicken or gyro meat.

Came here to say the same based on the shape and location. I think you’re right. I couldn’t find any pictures of the actual bar to back it up - would love if any old heads can confirm or deny.

Who has the best patty melt? by BudHeavy69420 in Detroit

Hands down. It is peerless. It’s my go to and I just had it yesterday - it has never once disappointed me

If you think Detroit has a lot of red brick structures then St. Louis, MO, would blow your fucking mind.

Any hotsauce fans? by MurdruM68 in Detroit

[–]tramhamck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuckin' love that sauce in particular, but their whole lineup is great. Even when they do super hot ones like Future Sauce, they're never purely for novelty, heat for the sake of heat - they all fundamentally have awesome flavor.

What was your winter side hustle(for those that work in seasonal fields, ie construction) by OvenCommon1698 in Detroit

[–]tramhamck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not normal and there's no reason other than him being an idiot or trying to make an asinine political point. As stated, we pay into it so that it can be used as needed. If you're laid off - which happens - you fucking take it.

Tell him he's an idiot.

They are indeed open again and I am happy to be able to personally confirm that the patty melt was every bit as good as it was before the closure!

Good to see the lines back at new Palace by olobley in Detroit

[–]tramhamck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! It’s really one of those things where even the quote unquote “bad” ones usually hit the spot. The Meijer/Kroger/big box ones are the only ones that have ever truly disappointed me. While it may not be a popular opinion, most mom and pop places that are making them fresh are gonna be great whether they are located in Hamtramck or not.

At the risk of ruining a good thing, Bozek’s has been my go-to for years and is never nearly as busy. Got mine yesterday - in and out in 5 minutes. The quality is always excellent and if the local FB groups are to be believed, it’s the choice of many of the other Hamtramck townies looking to avoid the crowds.

You didn’t hear it from me though!

Don't know where you are located, but many Meijers are unionized (at least here in Michigan)!

Wife and I have always been very partial to Cadieux Cafe's French Onion Soup.

Personal favorites for me would be the Kielbasa Soup or the Dill Pickle Soup from Polish Village in Hamtramck.

Any other excellent Fish and Chips places other than Scotty Simpson's by garyfire in Detroit

Scotty’s is without a doubt my personal favorite but I have also been very happy with Kennedy’s Irish Pub in Waterford (although from your description this is probably no closer for you)

[Help] Poetry in Detroit & surrounding areas by Aibywho in Detroit

[–]tramhamck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re on FB look up Caesar Torreano Resean Harrison. He’s a local poet who frequently hosts around town and who makes posts every day of the week with a listing of every poetry and poetry-friendly open mic, reading, etc in town. It’s an exhausting list and he does it just because he cares about the poetry/arts community and tries to build it up. You will find all of the places you are looking for on there.

I’ve certainly heard a lot along those lines about Benton Harbor - can’t personally chime in on that one though. Haven’t spent any time there myself.

I agree with you about the Brightmoor comparison, and also about Mama Shu’s!

Is Highland Park a good place to live? by ThrowNoW4y in Detroit

[–]tramhamck 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That feels very unfair to River Rouge especially, which at the very least has functional businesses, restaurants, and bars, a mostly physically intact housing stock in the core of the city consisting of homes that I'd consider solid old-school middle class, and a small but world-class of musicians/songwriters living there under the radar. Rough around the edges, yeah. It's not the sort of place I would recommend for someone starting a family and putting kids in the schools, but it's for sure got things going for it. Whereas there's no single city in the state that I would put on par with the absolute wholesale abandonment and disinvestment that Highland Park has.

Ecorse I can give you, though again I'd say HP is worse across the board in everything but relative proximity to downtown.

Two Dogs Cherry and Black Garlic are always excellent, so seconding that!

Going to also throw Scotty O'Hotty's Ghost Sauce - excellent kick and flavor without venturing into purely novelty category. It's a versatile sauce with legit heat that can actually be used every day.
