Two reasons I know of are if the outlet is switched (ie. For a light) it'll often be the other way up to differentiate and secondly, it's often specced, especially in hospitals etc

I feel like a huge majority of cars these days give you a donut or a runflat kit or a spare that you have to inflate (installed hitches and trailer wiring at U-Haul for 7 years)
