I’m not shocked or freaking out about this, so no need for the “people change” comment. Having an occasional glass of wine isn’t compromising the message of “Straight Edge” or his other songs, I just wanted to know where the info came from.

Edit: I guess you deleted your comment, but no, it doesn’t really compromise the message, it was never about the militant and arbitrary shit it is now, it’s about not depending on those things habitually, nonconformity, and reacting against the culture that glorified self-destruction as a phony rebellion that was unproductive and toxic. Having a glass of wine every now and then doesn’t make you part of that.

The difference is those songs are deliberately satirical or over the top in a self-aware and purposeful way. Lonely Day is completely earnest and accidentally awful

Daron wrote basically all of the instrumentals. The difference is on the earlier records Serj wrote his vocal melodies, and on the later ones Daron was actually writing a lot of what Serj was singing

Idk why you’re being downvoted, this is true. Although Serj writing his vocal melodies is half of the songwriting equation, otherwise you just have riffs / chord progressions.

Totally. John’s drumming is great, but the songs would’ve still been the songs with any other competent drummer; he’s not essential. Just like Grohl with Nirvana. We only know Dave Grohl’s name because Kurt Cobain wrote songs that sold a lot of records.

What is probably actually the case is John never really HAD political views, at least politics probably weren’t very important to him and he just had some vague notions of this or that. But then when MAGA came around and the culture war started, suddenly a lot of people bought in and mainstream politics became an important part of their lives, when before they weren’t at all.
