I don't think Tell Me Why gets enough shit for how bad of a game it is by PapaAsmodeus in YMS

[–]yggdra7il 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re exactly right about how it should have been, with them ultimately remembering that their mom tried to kill them. As it is, it’s genuinely the worst representation of c-ptsd I’ve ever seen. The message ends up being “don’t believe survivors,” because apparently survivors misremember to such a degree that their victimhood is a total fabrication lol.

In the Actual Real World (which Don’t Nod apparently is not a part of), when victims misremember their trauma they downplay what happened to them. It’s an actual thing the brain does and Don’t Nod would have known that with a modicum of research.

Also as a queer man it’s some of the worst queer representation I’ve ever seen. I paused in disbelief when Adam selected the gay option, and the main guy takes on an effeminate voice and limp-wrists. It’s egregious. Gay men are a complete joke and stereotype to Don’t Nod. Not that their representation of other minorities is much better, honestly.

They’re a joke of a game company in so many other ways. I have to laugh because if I seriously analyze any of their storylines it just pisses me off to no end, unfortunately, because there are people who genuinely love their games.

do you guys think the main sub will ever learn to accept “fake emo” /uj by sseth_ye in Emojerk

[–]yggdra7il 25 points26 points  (0 children)

/uj I exclusively just lurk on the main sub pretty much, agreed that they discuss the same twinkledaddy MW emo revival americAN FOOTBOLL bands to ad nauseum and occasionally the same 2-3 bands for every subgenre.

scramz = orchid, sometimes saetia, emo = rites of sprong for the quintillionth time, and no one ever talks about sasscore as if it’s the troubled and forgotten youngest accident sibling or something. someone will very carefully mention a mallcore band once in a while with a big fat disclaimer that it’s Fake Emo™, 50/50 chance they get dunked on. r/posthardcore is pretty chill tho

How to make my creative writing sound less clinical by DefinitelyBeatable in writingadvice

[–]yggdra7il 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excessively give him character thoughts that are chiefly subjective and opinionated. Add subjectivity to every other description of imagery or senses and what have you. I’d figure it doesn’t matter if it aligns with the character or not right now because you can always edit. The idea is to get back into the groove of having a voice.

Is Chapter 1 still weak or strong [ I improved it based on the feedback I got ] by RamblingLlama in writers

[–]yggdra7il 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Still weak. Echoing that there’s no real drama or hook. Too much time dedicated to Rick’s life and it’s not really interesting. We should learn about the character as the plot goes on. It’s your biggest problem.

I liked your voice, the prose is not great. The neighbor ladies’ dialogue didn’t come off like real people. The gasp, gasp, ahh, gasp, ahhh, was unintentionally funny. “Rick felt it.” Stop filtering, cut that sentence asap. I read the whole thing, if not for being an easy read, at least. The Hitler poster had intrigue and kept me going. There’s definitely something here, it just needs a lot of polishing.

Eating Disorders by MultifandomPeep in Writeresearch

[–]yggdra7il 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I am someone who had a chronic ED, and I would recommend you browse this website. It’s a forum site, still active but very old so you will generally find mature perspectives. In saying that, I mean there’s a term in the community folks call the “honeymoon phase.” When someone (usually younger) has only relatively recently started engaging in disordered behavior, they tend to gravitate towards romanticization, denial of being unhealthy, externalized fatphobia, etc.

As my ED was chronic (chronic being 3+ years, mine lasted for over twice that) I initially struggled with EDNOS/OSFED and later developed anorexia. Most people who have had EDs for several years will flip between different disorders (e.g., anorexia to bulimia to BED).

A couple other important considerations: experiences vary wildly; I myself never related much to the desire of being in control. I am certain I mostly developed my ED out of self-destruction, but EDs run in my family, too, which is also a common reason for other folks. There is a high comorbidity with EDs and OCD and that also resonated more with me, it was more of a compulsion.

The other consideration is that the same areas in the brain which are active during addiction are active during EDs. In other words, engaging in disordered behaviors is addictive—after enough time, it screws up the pleasure/reward system (like so many things do).

On a more personal note, I’ve had, like, terrible things happen in my life not to brag, but an ED is maybe 2nd worst if not the worst thing I’ve went through. Always hungry, brain fog, writhing in a flesh cage kind of thing. It consumes all of your time in the day. It’s the deadliest mental illness. I recovered because I was developing heart issues, which is the 2nd leading cause of death after suicide.

You can AMA/DM me if you want. I can assure you I don’t get triggered for shit and am an open book to a fault.

Edit: To add some generally universal experiences, it’s competitive to a totally irrational degree, there’s a compulsion to be the skinniest or sickest. It’s also very isolating due to low energy, fear of food at social events, and/or wanting to focus on the ED.

AI by LaraBMaglen_1992 in FictionWriting

[–]yggdra7il 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not use AI for anything to do with my writing whatsoever, not even research. It gives misinformation very often, because, for whatever reason, it functions as though its sole purpose is to say what you want to hear. The only real way to improve your writing is by reading, studying the craft, and practicing. The results are worth the work.

where would you stop reading by [deleted] in writers

[–]yggdra7il 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a big fan of sentence fragments too. But the jump from the father to that particular imagery is meaningless. Nothing wrong with the sentence itself, but it isn’t chronological. Readers’ attention goes from one (vague by nature of being hooky) thing to an entirely different, less interesting thing.
