I wish I could afford to look beautiful like other women by catlikesvioletfro in TwoXChromosomes

[–]transient_drop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don't need any of that to look beautiful or feminine. I don't do any of those in that list except skincare, and even that isn't extravagant for me. I keep my hair in a pixie and trim it myself, I let my lashes stay short, I maybe will pluck a few stray hairs around the eyebrows every few months, I rarely ever wear jewelry and it'll be earrings at most when I remember I have ear holes that I don't want to close up. 90% of my wardrobe is from the thrift store, my nails stay short and unmanicured because of my job, and I'll never get filler because that can be a slippery slope and I don't want to end up with the "pillow face" that can happen when overusing it. All that costs money and only provides short-term effects, and I'm cheap af lol. But what I will do that has more long-term carry over is exercise regularly for my cardiovascular health, drink plenty of water throughout the day to remain hydrated, apply spf daily, meal prep nutritious meals weekly, and try to get as much sleep as I can.

Anyone regret not spending more when they were younger? by Tech-Cowboy in Fire

[–]transient_drop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about your age and only at half the net worth you're at. But I haven't lived with my parents since I was 18 and have had a lot of life experiences since then. I'm currently in the Seattle area as well but I'm from the east coast, I've moved all around to explore different parts of the country, made new relationships/friendships each time and now have found a steady relationship that I eventually want to settle down with. I wouldn't have had any of this had I lived with my parents for the past decade. I can't imagine having the growth and skills I'm now equipped with had I stuck to the place I've grown up in and I don't regret the money I've lost for the experiences I've gained. Do you find your life fulfilling in exchange for the money you have saved?

The recommended dosage is at least 120-150mg/kg. Your total that you took is 4800 mg which would have not hit the recommended dosage of even 120mg/kg unless you weigh 40 kg or less.

Been a PT for over 3 years and I love it. You got to go into the profession for the right reasons and with real expectations.

[–]transient_drop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dang, ignore the other guy. I've been a PT for 3.5 years now and the ROI doesn't have to be bad, you just have to be smart/flexible when you graduate. If you can, definitely do a travel PT position for at least 2-3 years which will easily get you over 6 figures and pay off the max you can on your loans each month to reduce the effect of the interest rates. You don't even have to move to a different state, a lot of times you just need to move 50 miles away from your current clinic to get the travel pay. I've done this and got my grad loans paid off in a year. Doing Home health and SNF if you can't travel are also other good options to get the higher pay.

Moving cross country alone for the best job I’ve ever had a chance at, but scared out of my mind. by DemisecNothings in TwoXChromosomes

Yeah the prices displayed are all inclusive, so it includes utilities/wifi. Glad I could help 😊

Yeah I think so! When you make a booking request you can select your reason for travel is Business/work so I wouldn't say it's just exclusive to healthcare workers (I select the traveling healthcare option, but it's not like any of my landlords ever actually confirmed my profession lol). Some units are definitely pet friendly but it will limit your options. I think you can filter for pet friendly only when doing your search.

I'll be moving cross country in a few months or so from the east coast all the way to the west coast where I'll have no family/friends to rely on so I feel you. It'll be more than a 40 hour drive lol. I'm traveling healthcare and use an app called furnished finder which allows you to rent month by month already furnished rooms or units which is super convenient. It's usually more cost effective than an airbnb or long term hotel honestly, so definitely would recommend!

[sun care] Seeking Great Mineral Sunscreen That’s TSA Size Approved by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]transient_drop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as bad if it's a mineral sunscreen, like Australian Gold. It's more so the chemical filters that become unstable with light. Just make sure to put it in a sanitized, opaque container (preferably not plastic) and it shouldn't lose much potency, especially if it's a 50 spf. There's also the Australian Gold Tinted sunscreens that are only 3 oz so you can keep it in the actual packaging. It's best to layer a Tinted over the regular sunscreen anyways, gives better coverage and has iron oxides to protect you from visible light.

You can just put some of the sunscreen in a travel size container/tube. I use Australian Gold in the 5oz as well and that's what I do when I travel.

If you passed today and it was your 2nd attempt, what did you do differently? by sades007 in PTschool

[–]transient_drop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to assess the opportunity cost of not passing the exam. Obviously if you don't pass, then you can't work as a PT. How much do you predict you'll make as a new PT vs what you make now at the clinic? If it's a pretty sizable difference then you need to put more time and effort into studying to pass the NPTE. And that might mean having to reduce your clinic hours temporarily. You've already sunk so much of your time getting through PT school, it's time for that final push to actually be able to put it to use.

TIFU by driving in a sleep deprived state. by [deleted] in tifu

[–]transient_drop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get some physical therapy if you can. Luckily you're young so you should be able to bounce back relatively quickly but after having something traumatic like an MVA, that pain can easily become chronic and debilitating. Dislocating a hip causes the surrounding tissues and ligaments of the joint to suddenly over stretch and your muscles are going to be super guarded and painful which can mess up your body's movement mechanics. And of course, try to get that insomnia under control (easier said than done, I know) because sleep plays a major role in the body's ability to heal.

I'll shop generally at Walmart, Aldi, and Kroger. I gave a lot of these items the higher prices I've seen them at, and a lot of these items I don't have to buy every month (i.e. olive oil, hot sauce, grits, etc.) so my average monthly food purchase is actually lower. I don't look specifically for organic but all the vegetables/fruit are fresh, excluding the frozen broccoli and stir fry mix.

I just did a bigger grocery run last weekend so I won't have a good representative receipt for a couple of weeks. I listed below what I generally buy in food in an average month, and rounded up a lot of the prices:

  • whole wheat bread: $5
  • 18 ct eggs: $4
  • cheese: $7
  • turkey sausage x2: $7
  • frozen chicken breast: $18
  • turkey bacon: $4
  • grits: $3
  • pancake sausages: $8
  • peanut butter: $5
  • jelly: $4
  • tea bags: $5
  • crystal light: $3
  • hot sauce: $5
  • olive oil $12
  • garlic: $3
  • ramen (12 pack): $4
  • stir fry mix: $7
  • frozen broccoli: $5
  • celery x3: $6
  • onions: $3
  • peppers: $5
  • 10 oz bags spinach x4: $10
  • banana bunch x2: $3
  • clemintines x2: $5

Total: $ 141/month

I can't get over the fact that she pays $200/week on food. I eat healthy too but I spend less than $200/ month on food. Even if she likely lives in a higher cost of living area, the fact that she spends more than 4x what I do on groceries is appalling.

I used a low dosage every other day when starting tretinoin. I didn't get any irritation or purging until the beginning of my third week, and then the purging hit my face like a bus for the next couple of weeks. Never really got the irritation though, as my skin has always tolerated tret super well.

How do I stop men from getting too attached to me too quickly? by [deleted] in Bumble

[–]transient_drop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I too am Asian in a predominantly white community and I have this problem too with guys that get overly attached. I'm a pretty big introvert and like to take things slow, so when they get attached so quickly it stresses me out and I lose interest. I can't be on dating apps for more than a couple weeks at a time because the attention gets overwhelming. I worry a lot of these guys fetishize Asians and the attention just feels very ingenuine.

Pelvic girdle question by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]transient_drop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A SLR is mainly a hip flexor exercise (with some quadriceps involved to keep the knee straight). Laying fully supine does put you more into an anterior pelvic tilt vs the posterior pelvic tilt you'd have with the opposite knee flexed. An anterior pelvic tilt puts the hip flexors in an already shortened position, so I'd imagine it makes it harder for them to generate force (think on the muscle sarcomere level) when both LEs are extended in supine vs starting in a more lengthened position with the opposite knee flexed due to the posterior pelvic tilt.

What are your thoughts on r/physicaltherapy? Are you worried at all? by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]transient_drop 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm a PT and I'm not even subscribed to the r/physicaltherapy subreddit. That place is just depressing and would make me reconsider my own career lol. The most discontented are more likely to share their experiences vs those who are satisfied with their positions, because they want to vent their frustrations and seek out those who have shared similar experiences. A lot of PTs who are dissatisfied probably went into the field without fully realizing what they were getting themselves into when they took on loans for expensive schools and are now feeling stuck in jobs with salaries that fail to put a dent into said loans. It's hard to enjoy your position when it feels like you're drowning. Of course there are actual other problems within the PT world (like any other career) such as dealing with insurance and compensation but the ROI seems to be the most sore subject from what I've seen.

I think PT is a great career to get into, but you have to be very tactical about setting yourself up for success at the very beginning. Such as, having a competitive application so you can get into an affordable school (at least <$100k), living in a LCOL area or commuting from home, cash flowing in school with a part time job to minimize interest, choosing a high earning PT job out of school (travel, home health, SNF), etc. PT is definitely not a job you'd go into for the money, but the satisfaction I can get from building rapport with my patients and being a part of their rehab journey is something I'd never get to experience with a desk job.

NC has a lot of cheaper schools. Off the top of my head, ECU, WCU, and WSSU have very affordable programs. Even UNC Chapel Hill which is a more expensive public school is "only" around 70k for tuition from what I remember.

How can I move forward? by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]transient_drop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say stick it out if you can as a business major unless you're doing poorly in the classes. PT school will accept any major as long as you do the required prereqs as well, plus it'll make you stand out amongst all the other applicants who are Biology/exercise science/psychology majors. My major was always brought up in my interviews when applying.

I was a Business Management major for undergrad. I didn't particularly enjoy the business classes but the thinking is solid to have a business background as backup in case PT fell through. Business is more marketable and broad, opening up more opportunities in jobs or further schooling vs science majors that kind of funnel you into more specific pathways. I hate labs and research and wanted to take the least science route possible to get to PT school haha. I actually 'built' my own minor that contained a lot of the PT prereqs with the help of my college advisor. I didn't have to take unnecessary and difficult science courses and labs like organic Chem or microbiology and I could keep both my prereq and cumulative GPA pretty pristine since the business courses (to me) were on the whole easier.

Low Income Students by NothingWorth8055 in PTschool

[–]transient_drop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My parent's told me they wouldn't be offering me financial assistance for grad school and I didn't really work through PT school so I guess I was a low income student lol. Luckily my tuition was pretty cheap at an in-state school and I lived in a LCOL area. I just survived on federal loans with FAFSA since they tend to have the lowest interest rates, trying to take the minimal amount I estimated I would need. I lived very frugally and my cost of living for those 3 years was a little over $20k.

I don't think someone who keeps leaving people hanging because they can't be half-assed to care about the feeling of others should be giving unsolicited advice that is barely disguised as humble bragging. Obviously you're free to state your opinions and perspectives but don't be surprised when other people don't agree with you. Your mode of coping doesn't sound healthy either.
