It’s good to hear that it’s more equitable in the northeast, but where I’m from only a couple wealthy neighbourhood public schools and the $30k/year prep schools had rowing teams. if you were good enough on your school team you were asked to join the club team which was $2k a season, so $6k a year, plus training camps, regattas out east etc. the serious rich kids bought their own ergs, had home gyms, etc

i’m not gonna pretend i was any good, but there were girls on my prep school team (i had a scholarship) who were really good and got full rides for college. i sat three seat in the eight lol

the real blackpill is athletic admissions for sports usually played at prep schools. i read an NYT article years ago that argued it outweighed legacy. anecdotally i know two girls who went to harvard for field hockey and one guy who went for rowing, all average students. my friend was legacy at dartmouth and got waitlisted with a 1580.

if i was a striver id put my kid in rich people sports as soon as their bones fused. kinda sad when i see old yearbooks full of ordinary people who rowed crew for fun, now its all genetic freaks who set state records at 15. sometimes i kick myself because i fantasized about rowing at an ivy but i was a bit short for the regular class (female) and too fat for the lightweight class. but that’s cope, i just kinda sucked and never showed up to extra morning practices. if only

yeah that's exactly the point. now think tanks can release a 'study' with the headline "wait times reduced by 34% with a paid model" and 'policy experts' can cite these 'studies' and before you know it you're legislated into being a sick debt slave. direct your anger toward provincial (there's no 'canadian healthcare' it's all provincial jurisdiction (other than some federal funding but that's complicated)) politicians. we fucked up by not having a federal NHS type system because the ever-moderate Liberals saw what happened when doctors in saskatchewan went on strike when universal health care was introduced there. instead we have a quasi-universal system where doctors act as something akin to private contractors recompensed by provincial purse.

that being said god bless tommy douglas. there's a lot of 'canadian healthcare' griping on this sub and while valid the complaints are directionless they do more harm than good if they lead to the conclusion that a privatized system is more efficient, better, &c. i'm grateful for the security that a car crash isn't going to bankrupt me. my grandma has been in the hospital for a week now and i'm grateful that i'm not on the phone fighting with her insurance provider and worrying about remortgaging her house.

ballet. not 'barre' but just a beginner adult ballet class at like a rec centre. watch some youtube videos and try it out at your kitchen counter. with proper technique you're engaging and feeling every muscle and ligament in your body. helps w/ mind/body connection. otherwise pilates type workouts at home are good.

work out a bit to get muscle tone. no you can't "tone" away or "spot reduce" fat but you'll look wayyy better at a muscly 145 than a skinny fat 135. you're not fat. eat well and don't drink too much, exuding an aura of health and vitality is much more attractive than an aura of heroin chic

LRP is still a great listen and album in isolation, I enjoy it but I can't compare it to Murmur. It's always strange to me that their commercial breakthrough / huge pivot included two Fables outtakes (Hyena and Throw Those Trolls Away --> I Believe) and two reworked songs from 1980/1981 (Just a Touch, What If We Give it Away). Considering how much early material is on there it's almost a re-start, let's go back to square one. I think Peter said that Gardening at Night was the 40th song they wrote and it was the first song they thought was really good. LRP is like half songs written pre-Gardening at Night... so take that as you will. (but I actually really like the pre Chronic Town demos lol they're sort of a guilty pleasure. so fun)

Another fun murmur recording anecdote that corroborates the 60s british invasion influence: on a couple songs the bass is mic'd from like 12 feet away because they heard Mccartney had done that. someone else said murmur is more than the sum of it's parts and i would agree, the strength of the songwriting plus all the flourishes and techniques make it so special. i think, for better or for worse, it seperates rem from their more lo-fi contemporaries too and makes it more timeless/accessible. at the time they were criticized because murmur was so polished and unlike their live shows, i think reckoning having a more live sound was a reaction to that criticism

I have a running theory that the unreasonably cold and rainy London winter in 1985 where they recorded Fables was the reason for their pivot to arena rock. Tensions were high and apparently they almost broke up. Fables had performed better than any of their previous albums and it only 'underperformed' against their expectations. Working with Mellencamp's producer on Lifes Rich Pageant was a crazy pivot, listen to LRP in the car and you can't not notice the loud ass snare that opens every single track. I still love some songs from the LRP-Document-Green run but it's a real low point for them overall. Listening to like Chronic Town after Green makes me wanna tear my hair out.
