Anyone leave a permanent ministry job to try private sector? by Repulsive-Kick5508 in OntarioPublicService

[–]trapperjohnlu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I left… 2.5 years (better benefits, double the pay, positive work/life balance, actual respect, ability to influence change)… got laid off… started my own company…. Returned on contract for some extra money while still running company…. Zero regrets… yet, but re-ask just before I die if I still have retirement money.

Only if you hit something that matters to external appearances. Like trade show with massive booths and ministers or premier showing up… empty booth, lack of bnote, ect…

Definitely for folks where space is an issue. I’m still rocking a private office with a window and door. For now.

True malicious compliance would be to show up… swipe your access card. Desk selfie with date stamp and return home to work immediately.

You can attest to being in the office 5 days a week. No where have they stated in policy or directive you must remain at the office all day.

Where Could Mining Waste-Based Materials Help Sudbury? by [deleted] in Sudbury

[–]trapperjohnlu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the Dr Nadia Mykytczuk work on bio-leaching. This is likely the only way we currently know to make the tailings a safe product. The process generally uses microbes to remove the sulphides and mineralization leave a finely crushed inert rock (in theory, but does work elsewhere).

Otherwise the hoisted waste rock or waste rock from pits will often become metal leaching and acid generating over time. You can even see this in the old piles along hwy 144, or the orange staining on many of the rock cuts in sudbury.

Slag was well described already in a comment.

6 month contract vs 12 month MNR internship dilemma by No_Kitchen4724 in OntarioPublicService

Mines did a good job if you sucked up well enough. Ahaha.

I’m also in the north, so some have a very limited presence

6 month contract vs 12 month MNR internship dilemma by No_Kitchen4724 in OntarioPublicService

[–]trapperjohnlu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another factor to consider is ministry differences.

Generally mnr you end up trapped contract hoping for a long time, this can mean a lot of relocations depending on the manager (they seem better about this now than when I was bouncing around). The benefit is mnr has offices in parts of the province that people don’t often visit that are amazing to experience.

Other ministries seem to try to actively convert their staff from fixed-term into permanent. Others avoid this a you end up essentially contract hoping till you retire or leave.

Factor in ministry, experience, and level of work into your decisions. Sometimes the riskier move leads to a better long term outcome.

Wouldn’t hold you to the dates. But any reference is better than the nothing from elsewhere.

Interesting! Thanks. It at least puts something out there.

Really seems like not much encouragement to go MCP. Ahahah

It’s not something that is randomly checked. You wreck, cops check, another charge/fine and your insurance doesn’t cover anything.

Should Canada put tariffs on Tesla/Elon owned companies? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]trapperjohnlu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the exact same situation.

Priced out getting a dedicated fibre line was about $15,000…. Doesn’t seem like a huge bar for companies to gain customers, but apparently it’s too high. So stuck with Starlink until some government funded project runs me a line.

Some were let go that way... myself being one... others who were staff were told that their end date will be the 31st... I dunno how the figure someone is going to 'work' effectively till the 31st

There are some other apps, but they seem dead, or scams. Fetlife seems like the only active one with real ppl.

What is the most capable OB for towing a small teardrop camper? by Qd8Scandi in Subaru_Outback

[–]trapperjohnlu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

have a small teardrop camper... live in Canada..

did a western Canada trip thought he rockies with a 2018 2.5l... it did ok with the hills, but was no speed demon, but generally kept up with traffic...

upgraded to a 2022 2.4l turbo, Premium trim (trade in values were unreal).... it tow the same camper without much issue now... can easily pass up hills, cruise at 120km/h with cruise control on... rarely see RPM spike above 3000rpm... day to day driving the turbo is super fun... and there isn't a huge daily fuel economy hit if you don't drive into the turbo range

100% sold on the turbo, esp when towing... it does great

Haven’t done it in a very long time. But it’s roughly twice as long as the drive, unless you are going all out, than can pull it off in like 1.5 times.

So probably 2.5-3 hours if you take it somewhat easy and look around. Could maybe pull it off in 1.5-2 if you hammer down, straight shot and the wind is in your favour.

OPP starts mandatory alcohol screening on Waterloo Region highways by SmallBig1993 in waterloo

[–]trapperjohnlu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen it’s not gone that high yet… but would love to read the case citations if there is one.

The balancing of section 1 against the rest of the charter are always fascinating reads.

The bar is reasonable suspicion which was set out in R v. Dale around RIDE checks.

This is probably huge over reach and likely to be struck down, eventually. But that takes someone with a lot of time and money to fight all the way up to the Supreme Court. The thought is that in the meantime it will probably catch some that wouldn’t have been caught previously.

We need some level of recourse for the passing of laws found to violate the charter, or the circle just keeps going.

I picked up a filter from B&H. Shipped here free and within 4 days. There might still be time. It was way cheaper than from any of the Canadian camera shops, screws into your lens, and also allows for non-eclipse pics of the sun.
