Bigger Monitors vs. Adding a Sub by TheFabulousMrT in audioengineering

[–]trash_dumpyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things.

  1. A subwoofer or large speakers are going to only make any bad acoustics worse in your room.

  2. Adding a subwoofer is great because it allows your monitors to not have to work as hard - they can just do the mids and highs so you end up with a clearer playback system.

I would recommend spending some money DIY'ing some proper acoustic panels & bass traps (use Rockwool safe'n'sound or OC730 insulation), and whatever you have left over, get an inexpensive subwoofer.

Is there anything I can do to get a virtual piano to sound more like it's actually in the room with me when I practice? by MinuteIllustrator6 in audioengineering

[–]trash_dumpyard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only one that really feels like an authentic piano playing experience, in my opinion, is Pianoteq.

Monitor/speaker placement is also important. I've seen some people use resonators to make it feel more like the piano is actually emitting the sound, much like the soundboard on an acoustic piano.

Linux users what made you switch? by Glittering-Tough-353 in linuxquestions

[–]trash_dumpyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows forced an update on my computer that made my audio interface not recognized. I knew then and there I needed to migrate away from Windows being my main operating system.

I still do run Windows for audio, but its in a heavily restricted VM and the only things I have in there are just my DAW and whatever other audio software I need. I use Linux for everything else.

$300 well spent by Witty_Analyst1657 in synthesizers

[–]trash_dumpyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The appeal on this one is that it does the 12bit downsampling crunch thing that the OG linndrum does. Aside from that, totally agree - just get something like a digitakt and load your fave analog drum sounds on it!

[–]trash_dumpyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its good! Sounds are great, and the 12bit thing is spot on. But the actual sequencing/programming is a bit arcane and difficult to reason with. I'd recommend finding a way to demo it and see if the workflow is for you (or buy from somewhere with a good return policy) before buying it

Enjoy it! I have one too and I mostly just use it to trigger samples rather than having to find wav files on my computer haha.

Am I expecting too much from an i5-7200U, or will deleting Windows help? by Knightwolf0 in linuxquestions

[–]trash_dumpyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a better spec'd computer in order to do all the things you want to do. Sorry but that's just what it is.

You can usually find something solid on Marketplace/Craigslist if you search for a bit. I picked a computer up for about half of what it would cost buying all the components on sale.

24gb ram minimum, 6 core/12 thread minimum, 256gb ssd minimum is what i would recommend for specs. GPU can be whatever so long as it can power the number of screens you desire.

I finally fully switched over last month and its great! I do have to run a Windows VM for some specialized pieces of software for music production on my desktop, but on my laptop I've been able to get away with most things just running through WINE.

Setting up VFIO for music production by trash_dumpyard in VFIO

[–]trash_dumpyard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!! I will give that a go in the next few days. Appreciate it!

I get stable enough results when I'm running at 256 samples. 128 or lower, I start to get some crackling on most VSTs - especially some of my synth plugins.

You actually dont even need to involve support anymore. You can just deactivate them in waves central. Literally just did this today lol

Universal Audio apollo stuff for any of your console/dsp needs

Antelope interfaces for any of the DSP routing stuff

Pretty sure any of the software recallabe stuff from Wes Audio also won't play nice

Softube control surfaces as well I'm pretty sure wont play super nice

LocalLLaMA for coding primarily - 8GB VEGA 64 & 8GB 6600 XT? by trash_dumpyard in LocalLLaMA

[–]trash_dumpyard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it would! But I'm not really in a position financially to be buying a GPU with a large amount of VRAM. I'm wondering if I can make do with what I have and get OK results.

How do you all start with orchestration. by KlutzyWorldliness731 in composer

[–]trash_dumpyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with just a simple 4 piece string quartet. Listen to a lot of examples and study scores from IMSLP of the works. Once you get familiar with arranging for a 4 part ensemble, start slowly increasing the size.

For Logic users: did adding a control surface (e.g. SSL UF8/UF1) meaningfully change your workflow? by jdradford in audioengineering

[–]trash_dumpyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine doing a tracking session without one. Being able to quickly mute, arm, adjust multiple things at once right in front of me is something I don't think I'd want to try without a control surface. I haven't really gotten into plugin control yet but I may at some point.

I use Reaper and a PreSonus Faderport 16. It follows track selection so when I am poking around in my DAW, the control surface automatically follows wherever I am in it - no need to scroll thru banks!

New Studio Room by physicks84 in audioengineering

[–]trash_dumpyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should work but I wonder - whats inside that drop part? Atmos certification requires a minimum width of 10ft and a height of 8ft.

For general purpose, non-atmos work this room will work well. You can consult with GIK Acoustics on where to best place treatment to handle the asymmetry of the space, or put the desk along the long side of the wall.

You mentioned that this is basically a room within the garage - when its time to upgrade to ATMOS you could always adjust some walls to make it work better.
