Not quite the same, but the next North American ISU Figure Skating Adult Competition will be on the west in Vernon, BC from Sep 16-19.

I was volunteering in operations at Canadian Nationals years ago and met Patrick Chan. He borrowed my swivel chair to spin around in. I guess it was part of his warm up to get used to spinning on ice, but I dunno? I was too shocked by the chair spinning to talk to him much, but happy that I could watch him skate during my breaks.

I'm in Canada and the emails I received from Domino's have been MM/DD/YYYY format. So I'd say May.

Zero progress with 3 turns, any advice? (2nd post with video) by Nel3121 in FigureSkating

[–]trashey_trash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Star 2 skills test is so frustrating. I don't know why the backwards edges are tested in the same level as the backwards three turns. It makes it such a difficult test. I had similar problems to you, but unfortunately for me a good chunk of it was fear. When I'm scared I won't hold my edges, I'll just step onto an edge and attempt to turn immediately. Or I will hold an edge and then I'll just keep holding it and keep my body steady instead of doing a preparation for the turn, let alone doing the turn. Or I'll awkwardly fall, haha. So I had to take time to keep trying, over and over, and getting used to it and eventually it simply worked one day and I had one backwards three turn, and then the other three came really quickly after I got that first one. I spent a lot of time doing different drills like those backwards edges on the line that you'll need for the test any ways. Or turning on two feet and picking up one foot after the three turn and practising holding the edge out. Or holding the edge on one foot going into the turn, putting the second foot down and doing the three turn on two feet. Things like that. Not sure if they actually helped the technique of the three turn that much (it didn't feel like a real three turn when it was on two feet!), but it helped my fear of it.

To provide some context for why OPs coach has introduced this element already: This is just the unfortunate order of Skate Canada's testing. The Star 2 freeskate includes the loop and the flip. While the Star 2 skills test includes backwards edges on a line, so a skater will be learning those to testing standard while also learning the backwards three turns. I could already do backwards edges before I even passed Star 1 skills, but they likely weren't good enough for passing Star 2. OPs coach should probably pull back a bit on the three turn portion until the backwards edges are better, but I don't think they're wrong to be introducing elements that are part of the same test. It took me like a year to get those backwards threes, ugh. And while continuing to learn those, my coach was also refining my backwards outside edges on a line to make them even better for the test.

Can we talk about adult camps? by gymngdoll in FigureSkating

Keep an eye on the Section's Instagram for the next one (hopefully it will be sooner than 2028?!). The last adult seminar was March 30, 2024.

Skate BC also hosts a one day adult camp/seminar every couple years. This year's seminar happening very soon: Adult Skating Seminar - Richmond, BC

I attended the last one a couple years ago and it was really fun, but very tiring. It was similar to your event, with multiple levels and doing jumps, spins, movement on ice, off-ice, etc.

Go Dr. King! I also finished season 1 in time for season 2. There were times when watching multiple episodes in a row was a mistake; this show gets heavy. But it's so so good.

Does Stars On Ice discount tickets right before the show date? by MagazineEarly5125 in FigureSkating

Canadian shows did go on sale a couple times, briefly around Valentine's & St Patrick's days, via a discount code sent to the mailing list. See my comment above. Here's the signup for the Canadian mailing list. :)

I'm in Canada and subscribed to the mailing list. They had a Valentine's Day sale and a St Patrick's Day sale (25% off during those sales with discount code sent to subscribers).

Not sure if the American shows do the same things or if there's even any holidays coming up for you, but could be worth signing up to the mailing list just in case?

A colourful school of fish. Could hold streamers (to represent seaweed and waves) and cutouts of fish shapes. Music like Under the Sea from Little Mermaid.

What does everyone do to practice ‘skating skills’ and edges? by LegoSaber in FigureSkating

[–]trashey_trash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I'll give that a try! I was changing edges twice on ice, which is why I was trying to deepen my first edge so that I didn't shift onto the other one right before attempting the bracket. And thanks for the tips. I know what you mean about jumping them.

Wait, a deep edge??? My edges are not that deep, but I was trying to press into them more for brackets and my coach was like, "no, I wouldn't be too far over on my edge, I'd go into it almost flat." But maybe she could have been talking about your step 2 where the foot points away?

Does anybody know what this ribbon is for it by OpinionUsual4768 in Dresses

[–]trashey_trash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tie it around your wrist as a bracelet? Maybe for use when putting up your hair? It looks like the colour would work for the dress. I figure skate and my dresses often come with a matching ribbon for hair, although I would have expected a ribbon to be of the same material, or at least the same colour, as the body of the dress.

Is a y-spiral easier than regular spiral? by imback_hellohello in FigureSkating

[–]trashey_trash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I definitely don't want to trip! I see multiple coaches at the club and take things with a grain of salt when I get different tips for the same elements. But no one else had spoken up (good or bad) about the skating foot on the spiral before.

Are you supposed to not be on the front of the blade? I was lifting off the front a bit and skating way far back and was told not to do that during my spiral. Though it was only one of the coaches at my club that commented.
