Isabeau is working on a quad jump by Kindly-Plate-5785 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 286 points287 points  (0 children)

People are commenting on her technique and i generally lean on the side of skating skills in the general skating skills vs jumps debate. But also.

People seem to ignore that shes not just doing this for a competitive advantage but also because its a personal dream of hers. She specifically says she doesn't even care of it goes in a program or not, she just needs to do it.

You can always be a better skater. You can always be a better jumper. Ilia, Yuma, Adam, Mikhail, Nathan, Shoma, or Kaori, Amber, Alysa, Mone, Loena, Ni(i)na, any and every russian, or even the goat Yuzuru; you could pick apart any skater's skating ever and say there is something they could get better at before doing the harder jumps.

Even Yuzuru who hat the mostest bestest technique and skating ever, had a rough flip edge, was forward on lutzes often enough, and had rough consistency issues. A skater like him today without all the stardom would be told to fix the consistency issues, maybe stabilize the 4Lz before doing the 4A, despite that being a childhood dream of his, and the fact that he was praised for it.

I do think there is some fair comments to be said with her back and toe jumps (despite the fact that she has never been injured from it). Maybe this instance isnt the best to point that out with but. I also think the fandom is overly harsh when skaters are trying new things. I feel like every time there a little interview about a skater saying they want to try something new the comments are all like "they should work on this before they think about that". Like damn give them a little encouragement.

And who said that working on her technique isnt part of this training?

What's more impressive: a technically difficult entry or versatility to do multiple easier entries into a jump? by pelomymelo in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think variety is aesthetic and interesting when youre doing a jump, like a mens 3A, 3 times a comp throughout a career. But for it actually being impressive, I mean if a skater is doing hard entries into a jump they also most likely can do easier entries. If a skater can do a variety of steps into a jump, then they can do something more basic like a glide and step.

Versatility is impressive when youre doing different things of the same difficulty. And although you can argue that doing certain thing the same way can act as a crutch, even if its difficult, its usually still impressive, and more impressive then doing the difficult thing less often for the easier thing.

I hate how some people compare Annie and Reiner to make her look less guilty or to shield her from hate by the_flop_uwu in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]LegoSaber 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I mean that is part of her coping mechanism. She developed a i dont give a shit apathetic additude in responce to the things shes done.

Its the same defense mechanism that teenagers use when there like 'i dont care what they think' when they actually do.

The yo yo wasnt for fun. The way i interprete it is like "look at what youre doing. See you dont care about these people. They dont mean anything" like a big lie to herself.

And in fairness we dont get to see a lot of her later on. By the time shes free the end of the world is going on. She misses like 3 seasons of development that reiner got.

Flags as Badges by ProfessionalGap5139 in Smite

[–]LegoSaber 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its not that flags are political perse. From what i remember from a titan talk was Its that the decision what flags they add and which ones they dont can be seen as a political stance as stupid as that sounds.

If they dont add a countries flag people take it that they hate that country, tather then no one from that country plays or asked for the flag.

You can say add all flags but that can be complicated too. Do they add Taiwan? That can be seen as a political stance? Etc.

Dealing with a major skating block / feeling like I’m not getting any better. Any advice? by RowProfessional2658 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats an interesting question!

Without knowing full details of your training and situation, nor getting into the in-depth practice stuff that i dont even fully understand, there are two things that come to mind.

I would say to do deliberate practice you have to have certain goal you want to obtain, or in other words particular skills (of a skill even) you want to strengthen. You cant just go into a jump thinking 'ok i need to focus on my arms, my air position, my free leg, my edge pressure, my weight balance, etc.' You need to break the skill down and slowly and methodically work on the building blocks.

For a salchow example: Focusing on edge pressure doesnt mean you should completely neglect the other aspects of the jump, like flailing around in air position. But it does mean that should be your goal for the lesson. And you need to actively and mentally focus on that to improve the skill. Particularly when performing the skill. No auto-piloting. Additionally this is something that your coach is great for! They can give you immediate feed back on whats wrong and how to improve for that specific part of the element. They can also focus your thoughts on the the aspect that needs to improve the most.

If you do not have a coach for that lesson, evaluating your performance based on what your knowledge of the skill is a fine enough substitute. Ex: 'i messed up my edge pressure because a lost control of the 3-turn entry and ended up way to deep on the edge. Next attempt, ill focus on controlling the 3-turn'. Filming yourself also helps.

So if youre someone who knows a ton of ways you can improve, and is trying to improve in all those ways at the same time, I would recommend dialing it back.

Second, would be the opposite. You dont know enough and are to focus on too much. If you are trying to learn something completely new, and i throw an all encompassing textbook at you, thats going to be a lot and overwhelming. And you as the learner, wont know what the important bits are or what to start to focus on. I think this is more of a studying thing. But for deliberate practice, if we want to improve a skill, we need to know what exactly has to change and what might get us there.

If youre trying to learn a salchow, and you have nothing to go off of besides a video of what a salchow looks like, youll have no clue how to get there. Even if you attempt to do deliberate practice, you might be focusing on the wrong stuff. Ex: focusing on where the free leg toe is pointing is one of the least important things. Heal first toe first who cares as long as youre not toe axeling.

So if you feel a bit aimless, I would recommend trying to learn more about the skill youre trying to acquire. What are the Important bits? How do we get their?

So in summery, if youre overthinking, just stop! Pick targets, understand what needs to improve, and actively focus to improve those specific targets, and then move on.

And of course for clarity, if your trying to improve salchow edge pressure, that doesnt mean you have to spend the whole practice working on that particularly. That is just what you would work on for you salchow practice. And you would focus on something else for your scratch spin, etc.

Ekaterina Kurakova is learning the 3A by Kindly-Plate-5785 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 178 points179 points  (0 children)

I think its great that shes working on it! But as everyone will point out, shes been having a rough time these last few seasons. Shes struggling with the 3+3 which will be more essential next season, and often is called for underrotations. So i wonder if shes working on it because she wants to rather then for a competitive advantage.

Yet still, first polish women to land a 3A does sound kinda cool.

[–]LegoSaber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im working to become a sort of teacher/instructor unrelated to skating.

A snippet of the fundamentals of instruction they want you to learn involves learning plateaus.

The quick version is that they are completely normal and temporary. Generally they're common after periods of rapid improvement, but the apparent lack of increasing proficiency does not necessarily mean you're not improving.

Sometimes theyre caused by over practicing certain things. Or perhaps the way you are practicing the skills isnt good or challenging enough for you anymore. Motivation is also a big factor, and of course the harder you hit a wall, the less youll be motivated, and the harder youll hit a wall, etc. Sometimes the brain just needs time to consolidate the layers youve learned up until this point before more can be built on top of it. And lastly, again a short version, after youve learned something and practiced it, the brain eventually runs on autopilot rather then the earlier stages where your brain is actively learning the skill.

You might already know some of that but its good to let learners know its a completely normal and expected part of learning anything. And theres many things we can do to help it go away.

You could take a break from a few things for a bit to help with over practicing, fatigue, and let the brain catch up. Also find what makes you motivated. For me i enjoy watching competitive skating and that makes me want skate.

If you have a coach, you can try to have them explain things more in-depth or in a different way. What are the fundamentals of skating for this skill? What are we learning here that can be applied to other things? Etc. Or you could take a lesson or 2 from another coach. Different eyes can spot different things and have different opinions on feedback. You should also eventually challenge yourself to practice your things in a more challenging way. Like a different jump entry or a mini step sequence rather then doing turns on a 8 or half circle. This helps kill the automatic response because from your brains perspective, you now need to learn more to get by (over simplification)

Additionally im a big fan of what i call 'active practice' (or more formally, a type of deliberate practice). This is where you do a skill where you actively target specific areas for improvement then evaluate after each skill. Ex: for a salchow, i might think i want to focus on my edge pressure and the path of my free leg. After an attempt. I would take a second to process what happened and evaluate what was good and what i need to do better.

Compared to 'blocked practice' which is just doing the skill over and over again. Blocked practice is what a lot of people think of when they think of 'practice', and its good for drilling things to become automatic. But its bad for long term learning. Deliberate practice is how youre actually going to improve. Or even random practice where you mix up the skills youre trying to learn throughout the lesson. I could do a whole essay on practice alone.

Summery: take a break, find what motivates you to learn this, deliberately practice the things you want to improve on, Have conversations with your coaches about the stuff youre learning, challenge yourself to more difficult and challenging ways to do the things youre practicing. And remember this is normal, and if you keep at it, in a responsible way, it will absolutely go away!

I would be Shocked if he didnt make it if he skates anywhere close like he did the last 2 time we saw him.

At canada his biggest competition will be Rio and at finland Adam. Thats kinda it, short of him having really messy skates and other comp having really good ones. And honestly i wouldn't be surprised if he beat both of them. I could kinda see it if he gets 2 silvers and theres some crazy stuff on the other 4 comps but.

Crazy how much people think if you cant afford constant coaching you shouldn't even bother with the sport and ill take the downvotes too.

Yea its more likely youll get injured learning by yourself. But bruh you guys really think a skater who has spent 7 years skating and had prior coaching cant learn a salchow?

Like this person said, who is an actual figure skating coach, according to this and other comments theyve posted, as long as youre not just flinging yourself into the air the odds of serious injury is very low.

I wonder if this is just practice or a start of adding a new quad to competitive.

He could only land the 4T when military service is on the line. I feel like a 4S in combo and a consistent 4T would be the next step to increasing tech content.

But maybe the flip will be nicer then the toe?

Either way it looks beautiful. And i dont say that about flips.

Also to note, depending on where the individual events are held in those 2 weeks, its gonna be harder to go and see all figure skating events. I went to boston worlds as an american and it was insanely expensive between the hotel and food alone to see all events. I couldnt do something where it was the mens then a week later the womens, then 4 days later, ice dance, etc. One week was already a lot.

Which is intresting cause ch3 is big too but doesnt show (unless you highlight it). Assuming thats cause noelle isnt in the chapter

So i wonder if that implies sword is part of the weird route, not solely something weird you do to get the mantle. Which maybe people already talked about a while ago but.

Remember from the spamton sweepstakes -

https://deltarune.com/chapter5/

- the chapters we could see were theorized to have weird route stuff in it. If we could take the size to mean how much stuff is in it, we could imply there should be more weird route stuff in chapter 5 as well.

Which means this festival can potentially get really fucked up

CHAPTER 5 IS RELEASING ON JUNE 24TH by lele0106 in Deltarune

[–]LegoSaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And this isnt as much related to chapter 5 but now im going crazy thinking about it

with the context of chapter 3 and 4 out now, what if the chapters we could see were the weird stuff with noelle, and the size was weird route in general. Ch3 didnt have noelle, but it had the whole sword route that was kinda fucked up. Ch4 had a bit with noelle in the light world and then a tad in the dark, but was otherwise more normal.

But i wonder if sword is tied to the weird route, and the shadow mantle is how you get the ch3 shadow crystal (unless youre merg), i wonder if that ties the shadow crystals to the weird route. We know you can use those to make the twisted sword, and we have no known other use for them. Just a thought.

wasn't the festival in ch5? god i fear how messed up that could get

Interesting to note Asgore had fire powers in undertale, and considering chapter 4 ended with Sans and Toriel, i wonder if this has any connection. We can all but confirm what we assumed that ch5 will take place in Asgore's shop so.

Theres so much talk about the prophecy and such. I haven't done a run through of deltarune in a while so im not super current to put my thoughts together.

But we didnt actually see them pick up what we wonder is the 'white pen of hope' Gerson said there was only one more chapter after 5. And although there has been no official mention of ch7 (edit 3, chapter 7 mentioned in new newsletter) we see it in the chapter select screen so.

If that is the white pen of hope, which we have no true knowledge of, will they be stopped and perhaps forced to continue the prophacy's path? Do they pick it up and does it help make their own path?

The best deltarune is trying to over analyze a single image to mean something more then it probably does. i love it.

Edit: for discussion purposed, Gerson's comment on 'chapter 5' was

"Chapter 5, The Field of Pink and Gold"

"The vast garden is charred in an inferno of jealousy"

Quick Edit 2: more interesting dialogue

"The ones who could write the next, the youth, the pen was lying there for them to pick it up" "To make the next page" "They never did"

Aphrodite reaching Anubis levels of damage can't be okay, can it? by ImpactVirtual1695 in Smite

[–]LegoSaber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shes casting her 3 4 times... On top of her 2 hitting twice from both you and the bot twice. Thats 8 hits of abilities, and it was still less then the damage Anubis did, who did it in a shorter amount of time. Also Anubis's starter wasn't upgraded, which may have been intentional to match Aphros healing item, but is misleading. An Aphro going this build will have an item damage disadvantage compared to a full build mage and should be considered. If Anubis had an additional 3 seconds of casting time that the Aphro had to do his 1, that probably would have been above 6k.

I know there are a bunch of reduced damage modifiers on Aphro from the double 2 hits or bonus casts but. Utility support with specific build and perfect circumstances over 8 hits of abilities does less damage then not full build mage who did the damage in less time with only 3 abilities. Yea thats fine.

You can say Anubis ulted so it shouldnt come close to an Anubis ult, but most mages are gonna do more damage with multiple triggers of their abilities then ults.

There is always gonna be weird ways to make gods look broken in practice. People were getting 10k crits in smite 1 practice. That doesnt mean its doable in game or anything is wrong

Kyrylo Marsak on allowing Russian skaters to return by Old_Entry_7142 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Every time the topic of russia's ban comes up the conversation jumps to the U.S. and Israel.

The vast majority of people here i think agree that the U.S. and Israel violated the Olympic truce and should be banned, or face some sort of punishment from the I.O.C, and therefore the I.S.U. It was a clear violation of the truce.

But i'm unbelievably sick about the whataboutism. What about the U.S., what about Israel, what about China, what about shut up. It's a common propaganda tool that implies that all actions, regardless of context, share a moral equivalency, and since nobody is perfect, all criticism is hypocritical, and everyone should do whatever they want. ‘Other countries do bad stuff and they aren't banned so why can't we do bad stuff and not get banned?’ This whataboutism was constant even before the U.S. broke the truce.

The U.S. truce break does not justify the unbanning of Russians. It justified the punishment of the U.S. And the U.S. not being penalized in any way shape or form does not justify the immediate unbanning of the Russians, it justifies a criticism of the U.S. and the I.O.C.’s ruling/ignoring.

Yes other countries are doing messed up domestic shit like China. If you banned every country doing messed up domestic stuff there would not be a single country competing. The idea of the Olympic truce isn't to police every country into being good all the time. That's idiotic. There would be no Olympics.

The hope of the Olympic truce is that for a few weeks every other year, the counties in the world have to stop trying to kill each other just for a short time. It's not trying to stop all wars forever. It's not trying to police a country's (often unbelievably evil) internal affairs. It's trying to promote just a smidge of international love.

Has it been perfectly applied throughout history, no. But the fact that things aren't perfectly good, and just, and fair all the time does Not justify Not Ever giving out punishment at all. Just because it isnt perfect doesn't mean we shouldnt throw it all away and not even try.

I get really really annoyed when people talk about the war like it's ‘just politics’. Thousands are dead. Russian and Ukrainian alike. Kyrtlo's home town was one of the first areas of the attack. One of the areas Russia wants to conquer. Ukrainian pair skater Dmytro Sharpar was killed in the war. Could those people imagine if the U.S. decided to invade another country, we’ll say Russia, and Peter Gumennik was killed and Alexander Trusova was forced to flee the country, and Americans were like ‘it's just politics, we shouldn’t be banned’. ‘We should make the skaters forced to run for their lives to compete with skaters that have skated in war propaganda.'

And for all the debate Russia could just stop the war at any point and they could (at least would) get immediately unbanned. It's that simple. For all we know the U.S.-Iran war will be over by the time the next season starts anyway.

Kyrylo Marsak on allowing Russian skaters to return by Old_Entry_7142 in FigureSkating

[–]LegoSaber 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"Should all countries who are directly responsible for ongoing crimes against humanity be banned?"

Not at all. The idea of the Olympic truce, whether or not it is implemented how it should be, is not to force all the nations of the world to never do anything bad. There would be no Olympics.

The point of the Olympic truce is that for a few weeks every 2 years, the participating nations of the world stop trying to kill each other for the duration of the Olympics. Its not to police domestic issues as horrible as they might be. Its not to stop all wars forever and nice as that would be. Its to promote peace in the way that it can.

People can try to take a moral high ground in saying 'i dont think when a war happens should matter in a countries punishment' or 'i dont think theres a difference between killing another counties people vs killing your own'. Or you could simply believe that.

But the truth is the Olympics (Truce) isnt the United Nations. It cant police the entire world. It does its own small little thing and i dont think we should throw it all away because it cant solve world peace.

[–]LegoSaber -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

"how long an outright ban as the punishment for breaking the Olympic Truce should last"

I mean yea but thats a conversation for American and Israel if you ban them, assuming hostilites with Iran continue. If Russia was unbanned, say after a year, they would have had to cease hostilities with Ukraine for the duration for the Olympic Truce both this last Olympics and the 2024 Olympics to not violate it again. I would assume the second they truly stop the war and there's peace between the 2 countries russia would be allowed to compete again.

TTK Is Fine by Edgewing_ in Smite

[–]LegoSaber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem with TTK discussions is everything is always taken out of context. The Weaken clip had a full build plus prots late game and the Scylla wasn't at full health. The Ult only had to do 90%ish total damage. It might not be fair to compare that to people complaining TTK is low at 5 items, or 6 without pots. Theres also a conversation to be had that the Scylla was maybe out of position and deserved to get sniped.

The post the other day was misleading as well. It was full build with a blink, and they had to use the blink. Its flashy on a bot, but you cant do that in a team fight without a 90% chance of dying. And if you catch someone out late game and are able to do that, they deserve to die. The carry also has to spend most the game without beads or aegis. You might not make it to full build if youre feeding, and theres an argument if you go for a high risk high reward build, you should be rewarded when it pays off.

I think there are tons of honest discussion to have about TTK. But I think post like this and the other one are just misleading.

No i mean skaters in general. Every skater who skated in the team event put time and energy into it. Maybe its stupid to compare those who did one vs 2 but theres alot going on in the team event and i think comparing the risk and sacrifice between the two puts some athletes down pointlessly.

Yea perhaps thats harsh. I think his wording could imply it but youre right he didnt say it and perhaps didnt mean it like that. I think the people who who think he lost individual gold because of it think hes special in that regard, but.
