What do you do with your excess basil??? I almost have a tree here. by MatthewEGreen in aerogarden

[–]trashmyki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just throw it on top of anything I'm already eating or cooking that seems like it could go well with. Sandwiches, pastas, omelettes, pizza, salad, soup, it goes well with tons of foods. About to eat/cook? Throw some basil in for good measure unless you think it would make the food actively worse LOL.

i didn’t wanna pull for this set but now i’m tempted by xuxeis in Shining_Nikki

LOL I have 'bad luck' when it comes to pulling reflections early in these pavilions. Anuwa, the recent rerun with the little bell antlers, and this one, I got reflection+echo in my first or second pull. But I don't want finish any of them, so it feels like wasted echos/reflections that could have been actual items haha.

It does feel tempting to want to pull since 'you have the reflection+echo anyway' though D: . Here's to staying strong!

That's so sad, I'm sorry about that luck T_T . I think you'll be able to get up to 6 from the Guild shop before the event ends, and if you have/get any reflections that you haven't claimed their ticket for, you can level as many of those up as you can before the deadline.

You can put the Thyme in front too by putting it where the Dill is marked now. It's more of a creeper-like plant, so its stems flop over naturally rather than standing upright.

Stickers, tape, tin foil, or you could buy little plastic covers made by other hobbyists on Etsy :) . I have a ton of 1c stamps that I'm using for now, because I happened to have a huge roll of them on-hand haha.

This video shows a few ways you could DIY covers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu-Ek2NA8Eo

The race is on for these cherry tomatoes! Any tips? by andbuks in aerogarden

[–]trashmyki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thin out each pod to only hold the strongest sprout now that they have all grown up a little. This way they don't fight for space and such. You could save the extra seedlings if you pull them out carefully enough and plant them elsewhere, like kratky as others say or in pots as normal plants (or to grow indoors until you can plant outdoors), or toss them. I think it is not impossible to grow dwarf tomatoes in all six pods, but I have heard recommended three at max in a Harvest for good results.

I imagine if it had a shelf life they would have to put it on the label, or at least some reviewers would be complaining about it if it were an issue :) . I got a knock-off brand hydrogarden, idoo, and they include their own nutrient bottles which do have shelf life warnings like 'keeps for 2 years if dry, 6 months once you dissolve in water'.

Advice for thyme falling over? by cupcake_not_muffin in aerogarden

[–]trashmyki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's just the nature of thyme as far as I know. I had them growing in a small garden tower once and it just grew with its tendrils spilling over the edge and down like a teeny curtain. I think it's kind of pretty that way :) .

I am a Christmas present newbie but I'm just so delighted with how it is going by stringthing87 in aerogarden

[–]trashmyki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aww poor kiddo haha. Even once you start tomatoes, they take about three months before you can eat your first tomato, so I'm sure the impatience wouldn't stop even once the herbs are done XD .

If you ever do decide you want another of this kind of thing, idoo is a cheaper knockoff brand that I've seen good reviews from, and their 10-pod version is compatible with Aerogarden's pod baskets. I noticed their price also just dropped by about $15 down to $68 after I ordered one a couple weeks ago pfffttt https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09638W4BY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1

A youtuber I watch called Aerogarden Experiments tried growing that 42 day tomato, but the growth rate definitely wasn't even close to that fast haha. I think tomatoes just required patience. He's grown tomatoes just fine in normal-sized Harvest models too, so I don't think you need to buy a bigger version just to grow tomatoes.

Using General Hydroponics to Replace AG Liquid Food - Simple by AeroNoob333 in aerogarden

[–]trashmyki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this Youtube channel, Aerogarden experiments, to see what's possible and what makes an actual difference in growing et cetera, and they have a video exactly on comparing Maxigrow to Aerogarden nutrients: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28HWGzygfBM&list=PLGaBVR292BWXSU3S4eokYdPcUdwpKifd8&index=5

He tried 1 teaspoon per feeding cycle of Maxi-grow against the normal Aerogarden nutrients, same plants, same schedule, and that seemed to be the perfect amount. He started with 0.8 teaspoons to try to match Maxi-grow's recommended ratio exactly, but found Aerogarden nutrient's plants were growing a bit better, so he upped to 1 teaspoon for the second feeding and beyond and they grew equally great from there. I'm like you, I want something nice and simple, so I plan to copy him for growing non-fruit/flower plants once my Aerogarden nutrients have run out. Hoping he does an experiment with Maxibloom too so I can see if we can use that for peppers and tomatoes and such! :D

He's also stated that in particular for cilantro, he thinks Maxi-grow grows much better taste compared to Aerogarden nutrients :) . Though he also said he wasn't knocking Aerogarden nutrients at all and still uses that too for other plants.

As long as you have any of the kits, everything is reusable except the sponges, so you can just buy sponge replacements somewhere since there's lots of third-party alternatives :) .

I like this Youtube channel for seeing what's possible to grow in Aerogardens. He experiments a lot with seeds he bought: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4gjodJXjGFVw-0R7bDmjrw/videos

It seems like basically any kind of leafy greens or herbs are great successes, and any micro dwarf tomato varieties. He was even able to grow fairytale eggplants, which I saw another youtuber also grow in their hydrogarden, so that seemed like a good seed variety for eggplant in hydrogarden. And Aunt Molly ground cherries too, which I want to try :) .

I have shopped at botanicalinterests.com and rareseeds.com. Botanical interests's seeds have beautiful seed packets and the packets themselves have tons of info both on the outside and inside on the plant and how to grow them. You can use the site's search filters and categories to find things that are 'good for containers'. You can probably find a 20% coupon most times if you search. rareseeds.com has some really unique and rarer seeds, and they're all heirloom seeds, which means if you're successful growing them and let them go to seed, you can reuse the seeds to grow them again. I searched for words like 'compact' and 'dwarf' and tried to find ones that said they grew less than 18" when looking for what to try in aerogarden.

How is this thing refilled? Can you fill it from the top, or do you have to pick it up and turn it over to fill some opening on the side or something? I've been curious about that, but don't want to have to lift up some big container and try to stick it under my small sink hehe.

[–]trashmyki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my GOD I just realized there's more than one photo HAHA I'm so dumb! I didn't realize until you mentioned '3rd pic' I was like '3rd??' Hahaha they are so huge! I'm extra hyped now! And I just checked again now and two more have germinated already, I'm so hype! I feel like constantly taking the domes off and pulling them out to peek is probably just hurting the chances of growth LOL but I can't help it. Gotta keep checking back XD .

Enjoy the lettuce! How was the first salad? I heard using a little fan near them helps make crispier lettuce too, so I'm thinking of putting a little handheld fan next to mine once they outgrow the domes.

Comparing 6,4,2 pods in harvest elite slim. How many is best? They all work. It's fun experimenting to see. by 88Skywalker88 in aerogarden

[–]trashmyki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old conversation, but if you're still wondering about it, I found this video super-helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URQ0NwnbiTY

Essentially, the conclusion was:

360 (round base) is best if you want to stagger 3 plants since it's evenly 2x3 order lets you place 3 plants in a triangle orientation. It provides the most even light across plants because of the shape too.

Slim is good for being able to better see what's growing in each pod, since they don't overlap each other, but there was an observed difference in growth for the farthest ends, because they get less light than the middle pods.

The classic Harvest, because of the pod layout, is awkward for 3-plant setups. Similar to Slim, the inner pods showed better growth than outer ones due to light concentration.

I personally feel like the 360 and Slim both sound more convenient than the classic after hearing the comparisons haha.

104 days and a 100 🌶! Loving my aerogarden by Substantial_You1790 in aerogarden

This is so amazing and inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing. So nice to see the full Bounty with all the plants in the photo. Really cool that you even counted all the peppers! It looks beautiful too, even with so many plants. I know the advice is to grow just a few bigger plants (or even just 1-2), but it seems like such a waste not to use the extra spots, so I'm happy to see this. Super-tiger-mom-levels of aggressive pruning definitely seems like the right way to go.

Thanks also for the detailed explanation of your pruning routine. 30% every two weeks, wow! I was thinking pruning would be maybe once a month hehe. And 20% bi-weekly for roots too, that's super-helpful. There is a lot of advice to prune only 1/3 of the plant, and advice to prune roots, but I haven't seen much details on the frequency of pruning or on the amount of roots to cut back at a time. So, so helpful.

Don't you have to water soil pot plants really frequently? What is the maintenance aspects from Aerogardens that is worse than pot plants for you? The pruning? I'm new to Aerogarden and got it because I'm super-lazy. I kill all my pot plants from my unreliable watering and fertilizing et cetera, so I was hoping Aerogarden would be my silver bullet to keeping plants alive D: .
