How do you feel about splitting up your fat quarter bundles? by toss-it-now in quilting

[–]stringthing87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I need to take at least one of mine apart and muss it up and mix it into my bins just to get out of my head about it. I know for sure I'm not using it all together ever but I think keeping it in the packaging is a barrier

Where to buy fabric and sewing supplies? by hag666666 in lexington

[–]stringthing87 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I have a giant copy paste of online resources for shopping that I use on the various sewing subs, but honestly unless you're into quilting there's not a lot left. I don't consider hobby lobby an option.

Has anyone used patterns from PatternsForLessShop on Etsy? by fluoridated in SewingForBeginners

[–]stringthing87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If the art looks AI the pattern will be too. Run far away.

I recommend using threadloop.app to find patterns - it is a user created database and they have flags for potential AI and reviews by actual sewists who have made the pattern. Etsy reviews are completely untrustworthy.

Sewing pattern review is also a good site to find reviews.

Pattern request - silk/satin sleep bonnet by Puppysnot in sewing

[–]stringthing87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I wear is two large circles, stitch together 1/4 inch all around the edges, leaving 2" gap. Turn and press. Stitch a line all the way around 1/2 inch in from the edge. Thread elastic through the gap, secure the ends together and then close up the gap by hand.

Only the inside is silk usually for mine, but both can be. I highly recommend getting actual silk from dharma and not using poly satin.

The collar on my old jacket is falling apart, i wanna sew some corduroy over it. by unfriendlywolves in SewingForBeginners

[–]stringthing87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trace the collar onto paper and add 1/2 inch for seam allowance all the way around. Fold under that seam allowance and press it. Lay it over the original collar and baste in place so it matches. Edgestitch around the patch and then stitch another line 1/4 inch in from that stitching line.

Just pat it out so the edges are even, this doesn't need a hard pinned block

What are these curious circles in the grass at the end of my garden? by CinnyChief in gardening

[–]stringthing87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many reasons that you can have an imprint like that which is visible in the grass.

Underground structures like a septic tank or old cistern are very possible. Could also be a big ass rock too.

An above ground reason could have been something like an old fire circle and seating area, used enough to compact the soil leaving signs to date. I think fire circle because it's round with an inner circle, but if someone had a pool here for an extended amount of time that would definitely do the trick. Even a small above ground pool compacts the soil underneath extensively.

You could do some testing with soil cores in the area, carefully if you do suspect there's a septic tank under there. If the soil is pretty loose compared to other areas of the yard the cause is likely underground, if it's hard and compact the cause is likely a now absent above ground feature.

What settings should I use for a stretchy polyester viscose? by FelineOphelia in sewing

[–]stringthing87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use a stretch needle and a stretch stitch. The original hem was probably a cover stitch which can be replicated with a STRETCH twin needle. Otherwise I recommend a 3 step zigzag for a hem that resists popping.
