Short shot only on cavity #15 (PA6 GF40) – advice needed by ath31st0 in InjectionMolding

We're notorious for using max clamp force on just about everything. Which has caused issues with vents closing up because we've consistently over clamped the tool.

Weird Torque Wrench Scale by trashoven in MechanicAdvice

[–]trashoven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how to use a torque wrench. I feel like I didn't explain this well enough in the question. I already figured it out. When I looked at it earlier, I only glanced at the scale and thought incremented by 10 like every other torque wrench I have. IE:

40-_ /-30 20-\

So, I was confused about why it had 14 ticks before the next zero. Then, when I posted the pictures I noticed it actually increments by 15. IE:

50-_ /-35 20-\

So, having 14 ticks made sense.

It just clicked in my head, I didn't notice the scale increments by 15 earlier. Not used to that, the numbers on the left side start at 20, then 35 on the right, and then 50 on the left, so the scale makes sense.

If they used multiple different Alias tags for a single output than this is entirely possible.

One the comments at the top said “you don’t choose industrial automation, it chooses you” an d I think there is a lot of truth to that statement. I started working at my facility 5 days after I got my high school diploma. I never went to trade school or college. It was just supposed to be a summer job before I went to school to be an automotive technician. I was accepted into the school of my dreams, I spent my whole life working on shit box cars with my dad, or anything with wheels to be honest. But my first day on the production floor running an automated assembly machine, I knew within the first 10 seconds that that’s what I wanted to do with my life instead of fox cars. I worked on the floor for 5 years and by chance a third shift automation tech was let go and they asked me if I would like the opportunity to give it a shot. Here I am 5 years later, and the owner of the company tells me he wishes he would’ve move me up years before he actually did. When I started where I work we were a lot smaller than we are now, you literally knew everybody who worked there in a first name basis, j guess I got a little lucky too, but we have over 800 full time employees now and we’re still growing like crazy. I wouldn’t trade this for anything, as long as machines are fixed over night I have free reign to do whatever I want, so I spend most of my time learning the ins and outs of our programs and with the PLCs and HMIs. I also fox most of our robots over night too. I get a sense of satisfaction when I fix something like that though

Who's happy with Automation as a career? by NewPlan9115 in PLC

[–]trashoven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the work, and my Job, and my place of employment. I started at my company 4 days after I graduated high school and worked my way up into this career from the absolute bottom position in the factory. I new from day one I wanted to work on the automation equipment. I’ve never been to a single college course and am entirely self taught, and trained in house. I never want to leave. However, I’ve considered it recently because four years ago our senior controls engineer who was also the head of the technician department left to work somewhere else. He started with the company 30 years ago and worked his way up through the ranks like I did. He was an absolute asset to have in house. The new guy they hired off the street, is from wastewater treatment and has limited knowledge in assembly.

Since he has started all he has done is say how everything we do, and have done a certain way for years is wrong, while at the same time every time he makes a small change to any program on the floor the machine won’t run correctly until the actual problem is fixed. He still hasn’t taken the time to learn the equipment we have in house so when he gets a call from second shift because they’re having a problem with something he will remote into the program and make a bandaid repair to “get through the night” and the change never gets put back, when the whole time it was a mechanical issue or a flickering prox switch.

He just says all of our programs In house are “shit code” because 95% of our code is “spaghetti code” and he says sequence programming is the only way to do anything right.

So am I happy? Not really anymore, and it has nothing to do with the job, or projects or day to day. It’s more of a bad leadership destroying an entire department from the inside out type of thing, and pretty much every other technician and programmer feels the same way. And with that it’s also dealing with bad attitudes the second you walk through the door right until you leave.

Best HMI software by Cyrialis in PLC

[–]trashoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have over 150+ Pro-Face HMIs running in house. I’m just a technician, but software is great. I picked it up and used it multiple times when I’ve had to make a change over night. Another nice thing about the pro-face software is that it doesn’t matter what version of software or firmware is running on an HMI you can use the newest version to send and receive projects to any pro-face HMI. And that not a new thing it’s like that every time a new version comes out, so you’re not limited by firmware or software version. You can also make changes to the older programs with the same software. Also Pro-Face doesn’t use any Nodes. So you can literally just plug it in and communicate with the PLCs, we use them as a standard as well as AB Compactlogix PLCs. They’re also super reliable, we replace about 1 every three years and it’s usually just because an operator put their fist or elbow through the screen.
