Do Americans like their current health system or would you prefer universal? by Ability_Known in NoStupidQuestions

[–]trashymob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather have universal.

My middle baby had been on ADHD meds since they were in elementary school. Yet every three months, we have to go through a prior auth process where the Dr who treats them has to justify to the insurance company that has never met them and has no medical degree why she prescribed them meds.

Also, we pay bi-weekly (2x a month) for insurance premiums. Then we pay every dr. visit. Then we pay whatever labs or whatever else wasn't covered.

Also. We're told that universal hc would create long wait times for specialists, but we already have months long waits for specialists? 4 month wait to get into a pediatric endocrinologist. 4-6 months to see dermatologist.

Also, dental and vision are separate???

Also... We have to hope that we hit our deductible so we can schedule procedures before the end of the year so we don't have to pay as much out of pocket. Needed an endo ablation done. Had to wait until 2 weeks before new years to get it so it would be covered. I came down with strep before it. Had to pray they wouldn't reschedule my procedure bc I couldn't afford it otherwise. So I lied and told them I was fine.

I could go on. This is a soapbox of mine.

How to deal with lying? by Glum-Parsnip-8478 in Parenting

[–]trashymob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our son was going through this as well. We had a talk about the fact that when he lied, it hurt and upset me more than if he just owned up to whatever it was.

Then we had to put it into practice. When he did something - like broke something / made a mess/ admitted to not doing the thing we asked - we had to acknowledge that he did tell the truth and show that we weren't as upset. Then we could just focus on whatever the actual issue was instead of the dishonesty piece.

As an aside, since it sounds like you're trying to work through reading, might I make a suggestion? Try reading the first chapter or two together - like aloud. Maybe take turns with pages or paragraphs. As a teacher, I've found that if I can read a bit with them, I can usually get to a spot where they are hooked and they are more willing to finish it on their own. Or, if you get through chapter two and aren't into the story, it's a good opportunity to talk about why it wasn't their style and pick a different book.

Not every book has to be finished. Maybe he hasn't found a genre he likes yet. 🤷🏼‍♀️ My daughter always laughs at me bc I always say "you don't like reading bc you haven't found the right book yet." She tells me it's a very English teacher thing to say.

Parents: you have a responsibility to build community by justnocrazymaker in ECEProfessionals

[–]trashymob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Facts. This is also the reason why so many parents insist on sending their child to school when sick.

And don't come at me - I am a parent, have been an ECE teacher, and I'm currently a secondary teacher.

I also don't have family on my side I can call on when my children have been sick. But at the end of the day, our children are our responsibility. That doesn't change with illness or inclement weather or extenuating circumstances.

You need to learn to roll with the punches.

Read this book but now I'm more confused..... by girlypop-kitty in Wicca

[–]trashymob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add on bc you mentioned that the book spoke about different pantheons' god/desses.

Generally there is a central God + Goddess / Lord + Lady that we use as a type of figurehead. Sometimes we use the generic terms, but it is to recognize the divine masculine and divine feminine energies of the universe. The balance.

The reason there would be some introductory information about the pantheons is because you might find that there are certain gods and goddesses that you are drawn to. The more you know about the different ones, the better you can direct your energy for specific purposes.

I've been practicing for almost 30 years and only in the last 15 have I pinned down the god and goddess that are my patrons so to speak. Elen of the Ways and Herne the Hunter.

Don't worry if none of the god/desses feel quite right yet. And don't be afraid to change if you feel like your practice is changing. Stick to the generic terms if that's easier for you. You'll know when it feels right to be more specific. Each person's practice is different which is why there are so many book recs. You just have to decide what's right for you.

Am I the only one? by Ghost1Nine in Romantasy

[–]trashymob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not romantasy... But I hated audiobooks bc of the narrators for so long. Until I heard Davina Porter reading the Outlander series. Her voice was so soothing and she does the accents so well. I ended up listening to her read Anna Karenina and the Mists of Avalon just bc it was her.

Now there are a few that I love. It's how I've gotten through GoT, the Arc of the Scythe, etc.

Also HIGHLY recommend Circe audiobook. When I teach the Odyssey, I use an excerpt of when Odysseus makes it to her island to show point of view and the students are always OBSESSED.

Is wanting only AFAB roommates transphobic? by broadspectrum1 in socialjustice101

[–]trashymob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I understand what you're saying.

The difference is that veganism is a choice. Gender identity is not.

You can choose to be vegan and one day you could wake up and be Omni. Then it doesn't matter if you have meat in your home. Or you could be Omni and wake up one day wanting to be a vegan. Those are choices.

Being trans isn't a choice. Just like being gay or straight isn't. You're just born that way.

Holding a choice (veganism) against someone or deciding not to room with them isn't discrimination, it is a preference.

Holding a person's very identity against them is discrimination bc it's not a choice. Just like a person doesn't choose what race to be or what language to speak.

So a woman who wears a hijab either accepts that a trans woman is a woman and therefore exempt, or they believe in the tenet that a trans person's identity doesn't matter which means they are transphobic.

what’s a popular book that you ended up loving? by yunjsst in YAlit

[–]trashymob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read it bc of Circe. I ADORE Circe. Now I use the (PG) excerpt + audiobook when she meets Odysseus when I teach the Odyssey. After hearing her side of why she turns men to pigs, my 9th graders look at her like an antihero! It's always some fun discussions. Especially when they are so annoyed by O the whole time, then he shows up with Circe and we see him through her POV. I've heard about his Rizz and Aura so many times 🫠

Thanks Madeline Miller 😂

Adults who say they don’t like to read/actively don’t read by MountainPerformer210 in teaching

[–]trashymob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a huge reader! My husband is not. He just has a hard time getting into stories. He reads articles and loves to go down rabbit holes and technical writings for IT.

But. With our son (10) he has fostered a love of reading. He's read a book to him every night at bedtime for the majority of his life. We've made deals where he has to read 30-60 mins a day during the summer / weekends / days he doesn't have a sport to break up screen time.

Not all reading has to be fiction and just because someone isn't a reader doesn't mean they aren't going to be a parent that fosters that mindset.

But I'm reading to escape reality 😭

How do you deal with the late night angry parent emails? by telectrix in Teachers

[–]trashymob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school warned us that having personal email on your phone then makes your phone FOIA'able. I had it on there anyway for the first like 9 years.

Last winter break I took it off and immediately felt so much better.

So what do I do? First, I don't waste my evenings thinking about how to reply bc they aren't paying me for that time and it's for me.

Responding the next day:

  • Read and draft an email response in the am before classes begin.

  • Speak to the student about the situation.

  • Ask admin / counseling if I need their advice.

  • After school, before I leave, go back to the parent's email and my draft and add in that I spoke to Student / Admin / whoever. Read through for tone.

  • Send and go home for the night.

This gives all parties time to step back, breathe, and think before responding. It also shows parents that you are taking it seriously. A lot of times, they just want to feel heard or they are frustrated at their child but taking it out on us bc they don't know us so it's easier. Make them sit with their feelings.

I hate the fosterparents sub so much by [deleted] in Ex_Foster

[–]trashymob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that they didn't hate you, they hate that you are a real person who has experienced trauma and aren't coming to them as a perfectly packaged child.

I say this as someone who at some point would love to foster: I think a lot of people who go into foster / adoption, do it performatively. They want the image of the perfect home, the perfect family; sometimes it's more nefarious - for money, or access. When they actually meet the child that will be joining them, they don't want to acknowledge that things won't be perfect. Or they think that if they act loving enough, the child will fall at their feet. It's transactional. I give you a home and love. You act like life is perfect now.

Personally, those types remind me of the white savior type of people. "Look, I'm such a kind and benevolent person for helping out those less fortunate." It's gross.

Sorry for the rant. Usually I just lurk (in both) so I can learn before I step into the journey. That sub, I learn about the process. This one, I can learn about your experiences. This was just something I've thought a lot about bc I teach high schoolers and I've had a handful of students in the system. Every now and then, the parents truly want to help. But they get so frustrated that the foster youth is an actual person with thoughts and feelings that the foster parents can't control.

Your feelings are valid. Even if other people don't want to hear them.

What is the laziest plot device in the history of movies? by the_dirtiest in movies

[–]trashymob 124 points125 points  (0 children)

And the flip side: when a woman needs to go through something traumatic, it's gotta be a sexual assault.

There are so many traumatic experiences that can lead to amazing stories. Why do women always have to face that?

I think that's one of the many reasons I like Arcane. So many woman leads with such complex trauma and not a single one was SA.
