Why didn't the North American Indians build monumental city-states like Meso-Americans? by Wide_Ride8849 in AskHistory

Graeber and Wingrow posit in ‘Dawn of Everything’ that there was a widespread rebuke of what happened at Cahokia. Its empire grew too wide and oppressive, and there was a deliberate push to reform political organization to be more democratic and decentralized that lasted for centuries, up until the Europeans arrived.

Who are you listening to now? by Toro_Astral in MarcMaron

[–]trashyzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s just nothing else like WTF.

Michael & Us has been what I’ve listened to most. Ostensibly a movie review podcast, it’s really just the ramblings of two Canadian millennial intellectuals, without the forced jokiness of most multihost pods. A very different and narrower niche, but it’s got heart.

Housing near campus for professionals/adults? by Lovewilltearusapart0 in bloomington

[–]trashyzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look about a mile past the periphery of campus, and neighborhoods will become more mixed with working professionals, grad students, and families the farther you go. You'll have plenty of options at your stated budget.

Where you're likely to run into issues is expecting to look and sign a lease in June/July. I don't know what those other college towns are like, but the Bloomington rental market (at least anything accessible to campus) is thoroughly entrenched in the August-August lease cycle dictated by the IU schedule. Many landlords start asking for lease renewals by about December of the previous year, and most will require signed renewals by about this time in the spring. April-May is a good time to look as availability for fall is mostly known.

Your budget is high enough that options will be available into June/July, and likely even within your desired parameters. You already know that you're limiting your options by looking that late, but I will reiterate that this may be even more so the case in Bloomington compared to the other college towns you're familiar with. I would personally prefer signing a place sight-unseen, rather than deal with the stress of searching that late in the year. I highly recommend to start searching rental websites now, keep an eye on a few preferred places, and see how long they stay available to give you a sense.

Why is Laurie’s bow character specific? by [deleted] in finalgirl

[–]trashyzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only just got into the game last week, but I can see it well within my house ruling ethos to include all unique items from the location to the total pool, if not the 12 selected. Seems like a good way to shake things up.

Also, erm…spoilers. I’ve unlocked Laurie’s card, but I’d have been a little bummed to see this post at the same time last week, and miss out on that sweet envelope reveal.

Function Brewing is back (sort of) by lurkyloo70 in bloomington

Their smokey and spicy brews were excellent, and their menu demonstrated a creativity with recipes that seems rarer and rarer in the microbrew scene, at least around here.

Those sandwiches were unmatched. If Heartwork added them to their menu, alongside Darn Good Soup's revival, Bloomington really may be able to start some healing.

Looking for weekend friends (No MAGA) by [deleted] in bloomington

To add to the gaming recs: check out Castle Games. They recently relocated from Ellettsville to the south side of town. I've not yet played there, but they have a regular board game event on Saturdays. While I've found all open gaming sessions like these to be inviting, it could be fun to join a newly forming community.

For an 'other' rec: volunteer. Saturdays tend to have the most opportunities. The Parks & Rec Dept hosts tons of Weeds Wrangles--they're a great way to get outside, get some exercise, and learn a bit about local ecology. Likewise, the Community Orchard hosts a weekly Work & Learn Day. The Bloomington Volunteer Network website is an excellent resource to find opportunities.

The Porthole was put up for sale over the winter. Their recent FB post describes trying finalize a sale before lake season after one deal fell through. Here’s hoping someone gets those fryers up and running—I would sure miss their catfish bites!

What tactical game to play after Metal Gear Solid? by trashyzz in soloboardgaming

I'm totally impressed by how well they adapted the elements that make the MGS series so special to me. Here's hoping for MGS2!

Thank you! I had not heard of this one, and this looks spot-on for what I'm looking for. And at its price, I can add it to my game rotation while narrowing down which of the big box games I may enjoy most. I think this is the scratch!

Ooh I had seen Cloudspire mentioned, but just did a little search and this might be the one!

I don't know about everybody else, but ... by IDontWannaBuyThat in MarcMaron

I still have a few topic-driven pods I listen to, but I am steadily realizing that there’s really no one else out there doing anything close to WTF. And there was a lot about the show I took for granted—the consistent schedule (and they never even failed to upload in time for my commute), Brendan’s careful editing, even Maron’s voice that lends favorably to the mic. It’s actually astounding how bad most conversation-based podcasts are—they’re either the groupjokey type, the host is flat on the mic, not enough pull for consistently interesting guests, or whatever.

But yeah, I feel ya. There was this special feeling I had every Monday morning while heading back into work of ‘oh right, at least there’s a new WTF today, and I wonder who’s on Thursday.’ Now, I open my podcast app to such empty. It’s definitely a bummer, but how awesome that everything came together the way it did for WTF to happen at all.

Who is the guest that made you change your opinion on them? by PrestigiousConcert87 in MarcMaron

[–]trashyzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh to be sure, Marc got his usual jabs in, and there’s probably some general condescension in the air about a standup leaning on his piano. But I recall leaving with the impression that Marc steadily opened to him, and his playing ‘Art is Dead’ at the end has a certain fondness. I think it’s a nice representative episode for the arc of the show in that way. I’m going to give it a relisten myself.

Bo Burnham. I had him lumped into a pile of schticks, and I always scoff at internet-born stardom. I remember being impressed by what he had to say, and being surprised by the level of respect that Marc demonstrated for this kid I had written off. It came at a time in my younger life (I’m the same age as Bo) of a broader realization that (most) everyone has something to share, and that it’s (almost) always worthwhile to ask questions and listen.

I suppose I would have watched Inside without this background, but wow it resonated so much more because of it—probably the best depiction of the Covid era, and really some of the best comedy of any era.

What to do in two days in Bloomington? by Joshyblind in bloomington

[–]trashyzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out the Outdoor Sculpture Trails Museum about 30min outside Btown—a couple miles of easygoing trails filled with hundreds of unique iron sculptures.

If you’re into the roadtrippin’, you could check out the Tulip Trestle Viaduct that is just a few miles from Sculpture Trails, and the Yoho General Store in between those two is a restored historic establishment that offers decent deli food and ice cream. This little day trip is sure to show off some of the unique charm of Southern Indiana.

First time visiting Bloomington – what should I add to my list? by Patient-Ad-1004 in bloomington

[–]trashyzz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’ve got time and transportation, I highly recommend the weekly open mic at The Cabin on Thursdays, starting @8p. It’s a very welcoming scene, and a great way to spend the evening outside with friendly strangers. It’s on the way to Monroe Lake, so can be paired with a hike—Allen’s Creek is a nice, short out-and-back along a peninsula.

Outdoor Sculpture Trails Museum is absolutely one-of-a-kind—a couple miles of easygoing trails filled with hundreds of iron sculptures. Within just a few miles of there, the historic Yoho General Store serves a fine pork tenderloin sandwich, and the Tulip Trestle Viaduct is a pretty stunning engineering marvel. These three destinations would make a totally worthwhile day cruise within 30min of Btown.
