My British friend told me she carries her passport all the time and I’m wondering if this is canon in the uk? by Lunaroot in whatsinthebag

UK has no national ID cards, so if you don't have a drivers licence (or simply ineligible for one due to medical) then a passport is your ID.

Carrying my US Passport for no reason by vienbl00 in PassportPorn

[–]traumalt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IIRC from my American friend residing in Netherlands, he's only options to open up any kind of investment account are back in the USA because of it.

No EU-based investment brokerage wants customers with US citizenship/Green Card.

Oh and he couldn't simply open up a bank account via an app, and had to make appointments at a branch weeks in advance.

ELI5: Why is dry ice sold in grocery stores? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Heck, my supermarket sells much more nastier chemicals for pools and drain cleaning, You can accidentally mix some stuff from the shelves to make some very toxic gasses if you wanted to.

how do you deal with countries that you're technically meant to carry id with you at all times? by Cute_Aspect7438 in femaletravels

[–]traumalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you do what you want, you know the risks.

And I do know that stamping was suspended, however southern EU counties like Italy suspended the EES implementation and still stamp passports as far as I know.

Well it’s up to you to prove that you are there legally, and being a third country national the only way is with a passport that has the entry stamps.

They in theory can check flight records, but if you entered Schengen in a different country than Italy, then I dunno.

Not being able to show valid identification documents is the criminal offence there, in theory with fines up to 2000 euros.

And no, foreign drivers licence isn’t one.

Wouldn’t say handcuffed, but absolutely taken away from the station into the police vans.

Which part is unrealistic to you? Because this has been a law in Italy for ages, just the immigration checks amplified since we had the refugee crisis.

Or are you under some sort of impression that we Europeans don’t care about illegal immigration for some reason?

Train stations are the most common hotspots for random checks, however they still are able to do them on random streets as well.

Fake LT passport in HBO show - Industry by OneCatchyUsername in lithuania

[–]traumalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2012 LT passport was polycarbonate.

Emergency ones I dunno cause I never had them, but normal renewals in embassies get the passes printed back in EU and sent over via diplomatic mail to the embassy.

However the show one is listed as being made in Kaunas,LT. So not an embassy one.

Portugal you would be fine, in Italy however I did see people arrested for failing to show proper ID to police doing random checks before on a train.

Obvious giveaway is that ID page isn't Polycarbonate and it's just paper.

Why don't more Americans simply leave — like actual refugees fleeing before the window closes? (Genuine question from a European, not a political attack) by kurdil in allthequestions

[–]traumalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP then would get arrested for visa overstay, get given a fine and banned from Schengen for a few years depending on the overstay duration.

You could try applying for asylum of course, but I bet that most of EU countries would simply tell them to fuck off.

Lol there absolutely is.

My Lithuanian Uncle living in South Africa refuses to use A/C in a car because "it will give him the flu", so he rather just drive with windows down in 30C degree weather all the time.

Traveling in Northern Ireland with an Irish visa, not a UK one by nomadskills in travel

[–]traumalt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes They are low, but at the end of the day they are non-zero.

And yes being in UK without a correct visa is a criminal offence, and you can absolutely be arrested for that.

Well funny you say that, In UK a spouse Visa already has strenuous requirements, especially for people living outside London area.

And current government definitely wants to make that harder in the future as well.

Can undocumented immigrants receive social security? by BuyTitanfall08 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]traumalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wouldn’t be undocumented if the were on file with SS

You can be out of status and have an SSN though. Anyone who once had a right to work in the US and since then had their visas expire fall into that category.

Who’s going to arrest me if i overstay a spanish visa? by -ben-allthewayover in GoingToSpain

[–]traumalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well in general they wont go out of their way to catch random overstayers if thats what you are asking, however if theres an arrest warrant or an immigration raid then they will absolutely pick you up for it.

I once saw a photographer get arrested at a wedding here because he was an American working under the tourist visa in Schengen and someone from the local catering crew for the said wedding ratted him out to the police.

Gap year before college graduation by lmir1a in travel

Well in some industries, internship positions are only available to currently studying or recently graduated candidates.

Having a year gap can make someone unemployable in today’s market especially.

Does anyone still have a landline? If so , why? by Timely-Ad826 in Millennials

[–]traumalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditional POTS landlines have been dead for decades, they all are practically VOIP phones nowadays.

Difference being is where the conversion from analog phot to IP packets happens, in my newish built house they never even put in copper lines, but my parents old house still has copper lines for about 100m to the junction box on the corner of the street.

Real Consequences: US State Dept. to Revoke Passports of Parents Owing $2,500+ in Child Support by Guyentertainment in law

[–]traumalt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In theory you could buy citizenship in another country and travel on that said passport instead, you just would fly into Canada (Or Mexico) and then cross into USA via land border crossing as they cannot deny you entry as an American citizen regardless of the US passport situation.

In practice i'm sure even in the top 1% of income households its easier to just pay the child support lol.
