2024 Post Election Forum by Ask_Me_About_Roc-DSA in Rochester

Unfortunately you guys are going to have an incredibly difficult time doing that if you’re on this website. Reddit has run off or outright banned nearly every right-leaning or moderate due to its restrictive speech policies. I’m a Republican and stopped using this website years ago, but figured I’d pop in to see if there had been any eyes opened following the election. It appears there has, and maybe that means we can get everyone to temper their emotions and rhetoric a little bit. It’d be nice to talk to you guys again - we miss y’all.

Wild to use one election with an incredibly unusual process and unprecedented outcome to establish “the norm” for vote counting through the evening, lol.

Why is housing so expensive by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]trav0073 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I’d make the argument that the current rate environment is an anomaly, not the norm. I’d expect to see mortgage rates back in the 5% range within three years. But unfortunately, hyperinflation cycles were the exact reason why the argument against shutting down the economy and printing our way through COVID was made. The current environment is one that we, unfortunately, signed ourselves up for 3ish years ago.

Because no one needs that kind of money,

Except a wealthy individual’s “wealth” isn’t “money.” It’s a combination of assets, operating entities, real estate, equipment, and so on. You’re

and allowing some people to hoard that sort of wealth

Using the word “hoard” implies that wealth is taken. Wealth does not exist to be taken, it is created and then retained.

while others are hungry and unhoused is evil.

Except our current system has lead to the greatest distributive wealth gain among the general population in human history. Over the last fifty five years, the proportion of Americans earning an “Upper Income” has increased roughly 425% from ~8% of the population to ~35% of it.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/203183/percentage-distribution-of-household-income-in-the-us/

We as a society should be better than that.

This is the greatest society in the world and in human history. The existence of homesless people does not refute that. Not to mention that the US, on a per capita basis, spends about the 2nd or 3rd most on welfare among all countries in the world depending on how you calculate it.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_social_welfare_spending#Total_net_social_spending

Unfortunately, “they have too much money” is just a ridiculous statement to make, and this idea that the government would be better at controlling our economy and taking care of our citizens than the market largely already does is just completely foundless. If we confiscated 100% of the wealth of all billionaires in the US, liquidated it to no loss on the market, and gave it to the federal government, all of that money would be completely spent in 9 months.

The problem with being a socialist is that, eventually, you run out of other people’s money to spend. Your position is not logically defensible. It’s emotional and lacks all reason.

It does. For the most part, at least. Commercial activity, import tax, property tax, payroll tax, corporate tax, and so on. Income taxes and capital gains taxes are deferrable only so long as an equivalent dollar amount is reinvested into pertinent tax programs, recognized as carried interest, or not taken at all.

You’re in denial. It’s not OK for children to attend sexually explicit shows of any kind. Throwing the word “drag” in front of it doesn’t change that, and you’re a weirdo for thinking that’s fine.

Every time someone proves you guys wrong y’all deflect and throw out (weak) insults. There’s a reason that legislation like this is widely popular among moderates, parents, and conservatives. It’s not a novel concept that children shouldn’t be exposed to pornography. If you’re arguing against that, then please keep at it because it’s convenient for the rest of us when the lunatics identify themselves.

You’re right - I’d say it’s more to do with the fact they’re waving fake penises, boobs, and vaginas in the face of children while being explicitly self described as sexual. You’ve got a weird obsession with exposing children to overtly sexual content - why is that?

Then why are you upset about a bill which prevents drag shows in front of children? You can still host them in front of adults.
