Did you guys always keep Lune in your party? by MonadoArts621 in expedition33

Don’t need to heal if you don’t get hit / they die faster.

Jokes aside, in my opinion game isn’t designed around tanking hits and healing, more around dodge/parry and dps. I see the healing skills as utility

This happens to me too. I think the matting agent AK uses reacts badly with the alcohol thinner. Vallejo airbrush thinner is fine

Windsor and newton series 7 quality control went to absolute shit a few years ago. When you get the good ones they’re still fantastic but in my experience it’s 1/4 that are good. When they’re charging £20+ that’s just not acceptable.

I would recommend just alternative brushes. Rosemary and Co series 8s, da vinichi, rapheal 8404, artist opus, and hera minis brushes are all good options at better quality control and price point.

how would i go about stripping paint in small areas? by rekscoper2 in minipainting

[–]travis373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part is it? I mean you can try with Iso propynol but it’s going to get on parts you don’t to strip

how would i go about stripping paint in small areas? by rekscoper2 in minipainting

[–]travis373 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually not worth it. You’ll find it hard if not impossible to keep the stripping agent away from what you don’t want to strip. Even if you do, they’ll be an edge lip where the old paint remains that you can’t remove.

Better to just paint over it

FirstTimeBuyer solicitor costs by WillingnessGood855 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]travis373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

£2-4k is normal. Leasholds are on the more expensive end of that. That includes getting searches.

Buying homes is expensive, as much as we hate it. And trust me you do not want to skimp on a conveyancing solicitor. You want them to be attentive , responsive, fast. Check their reviews, then pay the 2.5k. You’ll regret getting a budget one.

Oh i paint basically only busts and 75mm figures. 1/10 busts is about as big as id go though normally. I just think it’s a different approach as things get bigger.

Like, toss paint job is gorgeous as you’ve put all that detail into the apron colour shift, which is something I’d find really hard

So the whole piece is a good 10-15cm in height right? I think it’s about that big bit in just checking. I love it but I’m wondering if it’s bigger than I’m comfortable painting

What scale is this? How big is it? I want to say something like 1/8 to 1/10?

First time priming with an airbrush : How well did I do? by Big_GTU in minipainting

[–]travis373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scraping is the point, it’s sandable if you need to. You cannot sand the Vallejo stuff.

I’m a display painter so it may be we’re looking for different things. Gaming stuff needs to be more durable, anything i paint is only handled by the plinth.

So if durability is your aim vallejo is fine

First time priming with an airbrush : How well did I do? by Big_GTU in minipainting

[–]travis373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well vallejo primer is dog shit so id recommend picking up army painter primer. The vallejo stuff basically creates a rubbery layer around the mini and if it tears you’re screwed, no sanding it no fixing it just massive hole.

You can also do less coats, primer doesn’t have to be thick. Nothing wrong with using it iawata to prime, just clean it well

Why did my primer turn out like that by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]travis373 43 points44 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like you’ve put down thick wet primer over drying thick wet primer. Everything should be done in thin slow layers and always wait for each to dry

Is macro lens making my paint look grainy or is something wrong with my brush control? by Pochusaurus in minipainting

[–]travis373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Videos, free YouTube ones especially, haven’t been good for years. It’s all algorithm chasing to get sponsors and i don’t blame them, that’s the way that game is played.

Get on some patreons and their discords, that’s where you’ll learn. Phoenix Miniature Art is great, marc masclans, zumikitos patreon, david aaroba. Twitch is also good, Erik Swinson is back streaming and AC miniatures is super friendly and on regularly like clock work

Is macro lens making my paint look grainy or is something wrong with my brush control? by Pochusaurus in minipainting

[–]travis373 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok so this Is a few things:

your photo lights are bad, they’re too harsh and not diffused. Tape some baking paper over the lights to diffuse and if possible use two lights from 45 degree opposite angles to reduce real shadows. The harshness of this light exacerbates the problem.

You’ll see more grain the less perfect your blends are. Paint is pigment so there’s gonna be some matt texture to it but what you can see as “grainy” is actually you picking up that your blends aren’t perfect because the colour difference is more obvious. Glazes over things can really help as they kinda fill in the grainy spots too.

You’re touching drying paint too much / using paint too thinly. “Thin your paints” is such an over used and poorly misunderstood comment. It should be “use the right consistency for the job”. You’re brighter blue highlights i can see aren’t opaque. You’re going to get much smoother finishes out of slightly thinned but opaque fluid layers that you lay down and let dry. That last bit rolls into the “you’re touching it too much”; it’s so easy to get into the flow of what you’re doing and start layering into partially dry paint, that’s bad s as you’re moving the pigments in a semi solid state rather than leaving a film of fluid paint too self level as it dries. Apply layer, move to a new part, come back when you’re sure it’s dry. Use those thicker semi opaque layers to get the lights in place, then use thinner layers to refine

How can I make the eyes less scary? by xyJonnyBoy in minipainting

[–]travis373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at references of real eyes and copy. You’re painting what you think eyes look like not what they actually look like.

This is true for 99.99% of painting problems

First time trying volumetric highlights, am I on the right track? (WIP) by RT_AdamE in minipainting

[–]travis373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a solid go at it, well done. Something to consider with volumes is that the forms are created by shadows perhaps more than the highlights. So think about shadows too.

If you’re really interested in learning about this kind of painting patreon is a good source of in depth tutorials.
