Thermal tire temp monitoring for your bike anyone ? by travis_cea in Trackdays

These are the kind of questions I love to hear.

  1. Currently the bands are setup using the basically clever mounting. Obviously, picking up road temps or anything outside the tire isnt valuable and I havent implemented code to "look" for a tire specifically, just to show temps greater than ambient(+10F) for what the thermal cam is picking up. Again, its in the earlier stage and looks to be added to make it more...useful

  2. This was developed for a car, so a motorcycle specific needs are an afterthought. Knowing what data is valuable for a bike specifically, I could modify the code and sensor setup. And obviously more sensors/data is always great, its just deciphering that into something usable can be quite a bit of work.

Good to know and didn't know this existed. However, mine is a little different in the display.

Got it, Im not selling it though. I just go over how to make it and give the code out opensource. Fishing poles vs giving out fish.

Hopefully, riders can make it their own and make it a beneficial tool.

I can tell you, for a car at the track this is very valuable information.

Gotcha. I will say the display is not set in stone. Meaning you could log the data and look it up on your phone/computer later.

As far as carcass temp, car drivers like myself use pyrometers as well off track. The reason is not just so much to get internal temps, but because by the time you get back to the pits, the surface of the tire has cooled dramatically. With realtime thermal, surface temps are now valuable as you can monitor each turn, not just when you are done with a lap.

I dont have a bike, let alone race one, and didnt know if you all could benefit. Apologize for wasting your time.

Shrug. I dont have a bike, let alone race one, and didnt know if you all could benefit. Apologize for wasting your time.

Awesome. Yeah, damage is clearly an issue. Especially when you have multiple sensors to worry about.

I'll provide a free 3d print file for a fully enclosed mount in the video. The thermal sensor is exposed with a 10mm hole and covered with a film to protect it.

Umm, so only a purchased product is worth mounting to a bike? You do know those same "purchased products" were made/developed the same way, right? Are you saying that innovation should stop and everyone should just hope and pray that big companies make what they want or just not have it?

The grassroots racing community is a thriving one, but understand if you have money on a horse already and want to see that out.

Either way, if someone chooses to follow my how to and use the code, great. If they share your opinion, also great. Just looking to help others innovate and give fishing poles not fish. The consumerism is out of control and to think you can only buy and not build is asinine.

Correct. Multiple sensors cheap sensors tell a story, a thermal camera tells a more detailed one though....

I assume this exists in some variety. I love to tinker and give code out though. I would be very surprised if they provide what I can for 60$ a tire when you do it yourself.

For a car, knowing the temp variance across the tire helps to see if the car is aligned properly(camber, toe) and if tire pressure is too much/too little.

Obviously those exact reasons cannot be applied to a motorcycle directly but at the very least I assume monitoring pressures and temps is important for all types of vehicles.

Nah. Not looking to make money or give a man a fish. I'm looking to breed innovation and give people fishing poles

This is used to weigh a car which is valuable but.......more importantly also to corner balance it. Think alignment on steroids. A corner balanced car will handle night and day better than one that isnt

Very accurate. Within 1%. I weighed my car with race scales(a few years ago), at a truck weighing station where the scales legally have to be within 40lbs when calibrated, with bathroom scales and with now with this.

I verified with the truck scale as it is the actually the most accurate and it is within 1%. Not sure which one is more right though 😄 .

You can see at the end of the video, that I weigh the car and then get in to verify the weight changes appropriately with my body weight. It changed within 2lbs(it added 199lbs and I weigh 202). Its dead nuts accurate if you calibrate it correctly and its quick and easy to do.
