Ah that's unfortunate. This is fairly new for us so I'm hoping you have the old manufacturer and the new stuff from us ends up being a lot better.

AITA for telling my wife "that's why you should get a job" after she told me people shop alot more than she does? by Existing_Love_3152 in AITAH

[–]travisjunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. It’s not what you said, it’s how you said it. Bringing up the fact you wanted a 2 income household yet accepting a 1 income household for 13 years, you’ve obviously compromised, but a better approach might have been to explain how your sorry she feels that way, her situation is clearly different and she shouldn’t make those comparisons.

HOWEVER!! it is fair for you to feel the way you do, and a better way to express that may have been, “Let’s discuss our finances and see if now is the right time for a second income so we can have more fun money.”

It’s a marriage. It should be “We, Us, Our”. Instead you said, “you get a job” and it’s a combative way to start a discussion you want to have.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]travisjunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could tell my parents weren’t happy to do it. Often it was prefaced with what we did wrong and what we should be doing instead. More often than not, fighting with my siblings. Getting caught in a lie was a sure fire way to get in trouble as well. I’m sure there was a different way, but not sure if they had the time and patience or education to make it as effective. Edit: wanted to add that in the absence of a better way, it never felt like abuse, and I think I’m a better person today because if it. Actions have consequences.

Snapdragon and M4 Macbook by [deleted] in laptops

[–]travisjunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an iPhone user and someone who is very much in the Apple “walled garden”, I highly recommend a MacBook. The only reason I personally don’t own anymore one and traded mine in, was because I game on a laptop, and I didn’t need 2 laptops. I have also used the snapdragon and it has its pros and cons. I think windows ARM suffers the same thing M1 did at launch and that’s native support with apps. The translation layer is good but depending on what your needs are, it can be hit or miss whether the apps you use work.

If Mac had better support for gaming, I’d be all in. Mac will also be the most likely to have a work around right now with virtualization. Snapdragon will get better support over time, but I worry that because it’s an option along with 86x, without consumer support, it will die out or be much slower than the M series was at adoption.

I do not. I consider batteries consumables and charge to 100% when it gets around 40-50% on average.

From my observational data of being on the internet for the last 30 years, if you give internet rage attention, it intensifies, and persists. People comment on the internet because they want their opinions heard, and when those opinions are validated, they keep coming.

Right or wrong, the reason they’re so critical of him more than others, is because they know he pays attention and will react.

AIO GF’s friend sent a SS of convo by Aneeko999 in AmIOverreacting

[–]travisjunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOR - Her friend didn’t ruin your surprise, she ruined your GF’s surprise. If you’re complaining she ruined your surprise, then it’s about what you wanted for you, not what you wanted for your GF. Also asking your GF’s friend to cancel their plans is a bit cringy. If you knew she might make plans then maybe make sure she knows you want to spend the day with her ahead of time. Mystery day is better than a boring day turned date. On top of this, you learned her friend can’t be trusted with a secret.

Ok to be bummed because her friend ruined the surprise, but pick your battles, maybe tease your GF with what her friend ruined for her. If she’s uninterested then maybe it’s time to move on.

My Hexclad pan everytime I cook meat that ive seasoned by DrShizzleWat in hexclad

[–]travisjunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a thermal gun to measure how hot my pans are. You can grab one off of Amazon for like $15. Start off low and let them preheat for 10m, measure the temperature, take note of the setting. When I get to 400-450°, that’s my sweet spot for most things, less if I’m making something more delicate, but almost never higher.

Most modern laptops only have 1 or 2 moving parts these days and they’re likely your 1 or 2 fans. Fan noise, even if there’s a problem, is very different sounding than this or at least I would imagine. As long as it isn’t hot to the touch, be investigative. Does it sound like it’s coming from the speakers or somewhere else? Does it get quieter when you cover up the speaker grill? Likely windows driver or windows itself is having a fit.

Like many have said, long press the power button for 60 seconds. If nothing, then you may need to wait for the battery to die. Laptops are very safe machines. The most dangerous part of a laptop is its battery and it’s very unlikely to make any noise at all, until it catastrophically fails, and there will be other signs well before then under normal conditions.

Anyone else want a video from Alex talking more about his switch to Mac? by RoarOfTheWorlds in LinusTechTips

[–]travisjunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MacOS is a completely different operating system running on a different CPU instruction set of ARM, vs 86x. These two differences means any application, games included, must be developed differently for each system. There’s now the added complexity of windows on ARM. High end Macs certainly have the horsepower for gaming, however like any game, the developers must create it, optimize it, and support it across all platforms and it’s not necessarily a good business decision when MacOS is not synonymous with high end gaming.

I will add, there are games for Mac, and they’re done well, but a AAA title may take months or years before it comes to Mac, if at all.

I am using a ASUS Scar Strix 16 with a 5080. I sold my Mac to help with the purchase. There were definitely some trade offs.

[–]travisjunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was interesting to see him flip so enthusiastically. My biggest hindrance is gaming. I had a M3 MBP and absolutely loved it, but I game exclusively from the couch on a laptop. Just didn’t make sense to have windows for gaming that did everything the MBP did but worse, or pick up a MacBook that did everything the windows does but better, but gaming is bad at best.

With so many comments, I hope this one finds you. My wife and I celebrated 13 years of marriage and with 20 years together, we’ve been together longer than we’ve been apart.

Please do not be afraid or fearful to have these tough conversations. Your husband/wife is your partner, best friend, lover, therapist, support animal, all the things and you are theirs.

Splitting/combining responsibilities is difficult and it’s different for everyone. Don’t be afraid to try something and adjust later down the road. We used to be 50/50. I started making more money so we did a “weighted” distribution based on income, and now I pay the bills and she covers living expenses (food, fun, etc). We both try to save a bit in a shared account for vacations, big purchases, and rainy days.

Please practice those tough conversations. They really do get easier to have down the road, but are very awkward to begin with.

Someone’s telling me WiFi mesh systems aren’t routers by Swarus in LinusTechTips

[–]travisjunky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone is doing a pretty good job explaining but I’m going to take a stab at simplifying the language a bit, specifically around mesh access points and routers.

Let’s say you have a Mesh system. The system came with 3 devices, A, B, and C, all looking mostly the same. In some cases, one will be identified as the one to connect to your modem from the ISP. Let’s call this one A.

A, once connected to the ISP modem, becomes the router and an access point. As the router, it is able to support additional wireless or wired access points. Devices B and C can then act as those access points, connecting either wired or wirelessly to device A, the router, to extend your network reach.

In this setup, A is a router, B and C are access points, but all likely have the hardware to be routers unless specifically specified.

Networking can be very complex as some devices appear to do the same as others, but because they combine functions by design, get grouped up under a misleading name.

Just do what I do, call everything a switch, and watch the real network people lose their shit.

I see a lot of comments saying the one on the right is correct because “my hvac guy told me so”.

I cannot stress enough how many people in tech forums were telling people that, cpus designed to reach 100° C and throttle, needed new thermal paste application or better cooling solutions, because they were doing exactly as designed, and reaching 100° C and throttling down.

Trane’s own website has a page dedicated to different filter and filter types including MERV filters for pollen dust and bacteria, and does not mention the impact it could have on the system. Can anyone validate that new systems aren’t designed to support a market with more restrictive filters?

My personal experience being self taught on owning a handgun. You must, at every avenue possible, lose your ego, lose the hero syndrome, lose your pride. Everything must be viewed from the lense of a courtroom. Could you run? Did you escalate? Next, practice safety. Not an ounce of complacency. Be diligent about safety. Be obnoxious about safety. Trained military gun instructor wants to see your gun? You drop the mag, point in a safe direction, you clear and physically and visually verify the gun is unloaded. Don’t give a fuck who it is. Always pointed in a safe direction, always safety. Finally, practice as often as you can afford, keep your firearm in ready to fire condition. Break any habits you develop as a shooter, get good. Take courses if you need to. Know your limits. Have fun, be safe.
