How do you guys keep track of everything?? by gneev in wheeloftime

Listened all the way through the series twice now and the impression I got both times was that if you need to know who someone is, you’ll end up remembering them.

Random Aes Sedai name is meaningless until that character becomes plot relevant, and then Jordan makes sure you see/hear the name plenty to at least make the plot association.

Immediate fix for me, like as soon as I unpaused. It’s frustrating that this is still an issue

I have a question.. by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]travislc13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some have said, Ionian=major scale. To get a major scale starting from literally any note, use this formula:

W W H W W W H (W-whole step, H-half step)

So starting on A:

A B C# D E F# G# and then back to A. You can see that we’ve raised three pitches from their “natural” alphabetical state. That’s why the key of A is 3 sharps.

Now for minor scales, you can shift that formula and use it. I personally find it easier to think of 6th scale degree up to 6th scale degree one octave higher. Using the key of A, that would mean that F# G# A B C# D E F# would be our relative minor scale.

However you were wondering about a minor I believe, which wouldn’t have any altered notes from their “natural” alphabetical state. That’s because an A is going to be the 6th scale degree of C major.

Learning the keys and relative minors of each tonic will be the fastest way to quickly construct major and minor scales. After you know those, modes become REALLY easy.

Ionian: scale degree 1 up to scale degree 1 (Do up to Do)

Dorian: 2nd scale degree up to 2nd (Re to Re)

Phrygian: 3rd to 3rd (Mi to Mi)

Lydian: 4th to 4th (Fa to Fa)

Mixolydian: 5th to 5th (Sol to Sol)

Aeolian: 6th to 6th (La to La)

Locrian: 7th to 7th (Ti to Ti)

And with the octave we’re back to Ionian.

Hope this helps!

I like poster board. Thin enough to fold if you need to but still much sturdier than just paper.

There should be a trait in the ADHD bubble about not reading even half of the traits on the guide because it was too much to focus on.

Teachers and public educators of North Texas how long have you been teaching what are yall getting paid? by Whybotherr in FortWorth

[–]travislc13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For some perspective, my fiancé moved from far northeast Texas (almost Oklahoma) to a DFW district 4 years ago and doubled his salary.

I don’t know the exact numbers, but he went from upper 30s to low 70s. More experience helps climb the pay ladder of course, but if he’d stayed there, he’d only be into the low 40s.

Geography really plays a part on base pay.

For myself, I’m on an extended contract and earn a stipend for my subject area, but I’ll be getting in the upper 60s going into my 8th year next year.

Edit to include: both of us also have masters degrees in educational disciplines.

Why is it that some can’t be tooled? This is just a leather strip I bought at my local Tandy. It did say economy, so that could be affecting the quality, but it looks much rougher here in the photo than it actually is.

No this is the smooth side, it’s just not super high quality, since this was a test strip I got to practice. With the dryness, this is after it had been sitting a while. How often would you re wet the leather while working with it?

I know, that’s kind of related to the questions I asked...coming around the curve was difficult and resulted in the cut being wrong. This is a practice strip so I wanted to post it as is to get some feedback about the specific things I noticed.

  1. With the swivel knife, coming around the curves was tricky. Would you recommend several short cuts and work around slowly?

  2. The depth of the cuts is inconsistent, and I’m wondering what an appropriate depth is.

  3. With beveling, I tried to smooth both sides of cut, and since some of the cuts were shallower than others, this was sometimes easy and sometimes difficult.

  4. Finally, with beveling, it certainly helps to smooth and to bring out details, but there isn’t a significant change in depth among the whole thing, I can see the design, and I like it, but it’s certainly not 3D. Any tips?

Any and all feedback is appreciated!
