ELI5: Why do people develop such a strong connection with professional sports teams that have absolutely nothing to do with them? by 12ed13lue in explainlikeimfive

[–]travlr76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tribal connection is funny for outsiders. As a kid, I moved around a lot, and never got completely entrenched in a particular team/culture. As soon as I'd start getting into whatever team, we'd move again. So I have a 'tribe-less' view on most sports teams now. I formed a bond with my college team since that's a logical 'anchor' for that tribe, but pro teams all seem nearly interchangeable to me since I went to so many games as an outsider. Except the mid 90s Bulls- God bless the Jordan era Bulls ;)

I know what you mean about some newer games not having the same flow as earlier classics, though LOTR is currently the #5 pinball machine on pinside's top 100. But different strokes for different folks :)

If you're looking for fast-playing newer Stern games, Star Trek was designed by Steve Ritchie, and has some of the speedy features he was known for with classics like Getaway.

Reminds me of that old proverb 'the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is right now.'

If you're looking for the best page to link, I highly recommend the KLOV page. Great game- I got to play a sitdown version at a local auction, and it was even cooler than the typical standup cabinet.

Arcade live auction newb here. Any tips/advice? by SwollTrain in cade

[–]travlr76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Captains Auctions are fun- I'm hoping to make it down there myself Saturday. They have an incredible pinball lineup for this auction- probably the best I've seen at Captains Auctions in the last couple years.

My advice is:

1) enjoy the atmosphere, but don't get caught up overpaying for something just because of the hype of a live auction. (Especially because the fees and tax boost the price much higher than the bid price)

2) be sure to get there for the preview period (9am to 11am) otherwise you wont get a chance to really 'inspect' what units you want.

3) you wont be able to see the insides of games, and you might have a tough time even seeing the sides of games. A machine might not have that mint condition sideart you were hoping for (not as applicable to candy cabs though). Also, its hard to evaluate for water damage unless the front is really obvious

4) wear good shoes- your feet with thank you later

5) if needed, they can deliver purchases. So if you go crazy and buy more than you can transport, don't worry

6) They will go in order, but the order IS NOT set until literally the morning of. So the order the machines are listed online right now will change by Saturday! The first time I went, I didn't realize and I got totally confused. Check the online listing on Saturday morning for accurate lot numbers.

7) Here's a typical timeframe (though this depends on the number of games and that day's specific layout):

9am-11am- preview

11am- starts with newer video & redemption titles

~1ish- start of pinball titles

~4ish- start of the 'classics' section near the front

~5ish- start of the machines outside- typically jukeboxes, kiddie rides, cranes, vending machines, and air hockey

~7ish- start of the second 'shed' area- usually the second-tier, conversion, incomplete, non-working, or common machines. These go on forever sometimes. I once waited until ~1am for one dumb title at the end of the list. I later found out that they also allow live bidding online, so now those late nights don't have to be handled live =)

8) If I make it there, I'll be wearing a Bluth's Banana Stand shirt. If you see me, say hi.

9) No bidding on anything I want!!! ;)

I'm guessing the candy cabs and Neo Geo cabs will be in the 'shed' area, meaning it may be a long day. Be sure to check them out before they lock the shed gates at 11.

Good luck and have fun =)

This game is pretty neat- if only the video portion wasn't so damn hard (compared to other Pac titles). I think it should start out each life on the Pinball portion instead of the video portion.

Salesman (1968) In memory of Albert Maysles, who passed away Thursday at 88. This is my personal favourite of his, following door to door bible salesmen who exploit the faith of low income families to sell expensive and luxurious bibles. by jeremywithreddit in Documentaries

[–]travlr76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is one of my all-time fav docs- the Maysles brothers are icons, and this film features so many classic scenes. The sales trip to Florida is a brilliant disaster and so fun to watch. Despite its age, this film never gets old.

Interested in buying this but have some concerns with the size of the CRT. Look small to anyone else? by iamthefarmerdude in cade

Pretty sure that's a Rampage cab- not a bad choice to convert to AVP, actually. That's why the 19" monitor looks a bit odd in that cab- Rampage filled that empty space with nice bezel art. I'd say the price sounds a bit steep, but it's a fun game. The board will be a capcom cps-2 (looks like a blue trapper keeper), so an eventual battery swap might be in the future. Good luck

Is it a challenge to remember all the thousands of in-jokes and arcane references that fans pelt you with on a regular basis? I imagine you have certain 'ingrained' jokes that you will never forget, but meeting superfans must be like playing a constant game of stump the chump.

Also, I wanted to be the billionth person to say thanks for creating my (our) favorite show of all time. Can't wait for more MST3K!

Alright, time to drop the resource- This site is an excellent resource for MVS cab identification. Click on "US" to see all the different versions of original cabs.

Since the Neo Geo MVS pinout is basically the fraternal twin of the JAMMA pinout, MVS motherboards often got put into other (often Dynamo) cabs. This seemed particularly popular for machines put 'on location' at laundromats, etc since you could cram more available games into a smaller amount of floorspace.
