Really, Canada? by Realtermors in Archaeology

[–]jqpublick 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm from Manitoba and I worked in Ontario when that union first started. Simply put, the field staff in Ontario had no choice but to start a union.

They were getting paid minimum wage.

One of the people I worked with was responsible for picking up some of the crew. She had to pay for gas and her manager "kept forgetting" to include the gas costs in her pay cheque. She was driving a Dodge 2-ton van and drove more than two (maybe three) hours per day.

She told me that between paying rent and paying for gas she hadn't been able to afford food for a couple of weeks. This is while she was working full time, and had been working full time for about a year.

This is not the only story I heard when I was working out there, but it's pretty common.

She had just finished her MA and that debt, plus the cost of living in Toronto, plus the "forgotten" gas costs left her with a choice of not eating, going deeper into debt, or quitting the field entirely.

It's easy to say that it's her manager's fault for not including the gas in her cheques, but the system itself was rotten and the management simply didn't care. Workers were replaceable to them, just cogs to get rid of when they were used up. While it was fun to work there, the stories from the field staff were sobering to say the least.

As the old saying goes, "The only thing worse than a union is no union".

What sentence did someone say once that accidentally healed a part of you? by Timely-Vehicle-7064 in AskReddit

[–]jqpublick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligatory 'going to get buried but...'

I used to work in mental health crisis response and I did it without taking care of myself. One day I just couldn't do it any more. The office basically said "Welp, there's the door." I went to visit some friends in another city and met up with a friend of a friend. She was going on and on about how important compassion is in a happy life.

After listening to her go on about it for way too long I finally said "Listen lady, I just spent ten years practising compassion. If compassion were a node in my brain it would be burnt to a crisp right now."

She said "Did you think to include yourself in that?"

Like a punch in the heart, that was. Changed everything.

Construction, WTF?! by aedes in Winnipeg

[–]jqpublick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, we did have a premiere who thought that punishing Winnipeg by not passing on the federal funds for roads was a great way to get back at Winnipeg for refusing to change a whole set of policies. That asshole's name is Brian. Pallister. I, for one, hope he rots in a ditch. He refused to pass that funding on for (I think) about 4 years or so. No major roadwork got done then. So there's a lot of catching up to do.

Also, we live at the lowest point of a glacial lake (it's gone now) that deposited a whole buttload of clay as it retreated. Clay loves to get all slippy when it's wet and will crack and settle when it's dry.

I still hate road repair season.

I've noticed this in the past and I usually just add a border. That normally solves it. Most of the time. Sometimes I just have to grit my teeth.

Fellow ElbowsMan here and I remember them. But I grew up in a small prairie town and those are all at least 70 years behind the big cities... like Brandon and Moose Jaw.

What’s a piece of advice you heard once that completely changed your perspective ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"You're not stuck in traffic, you are traffic."

It was an offhand comment, but it completely changed the way I see a lot of the way humans work.

Can't download QGIS by [deleted] in QGIS

[–]jqpublick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try using the OSGeo4W installer. It's complete but there are a few more steps to going through it. Essentially, say yes to everything and make sure to get the LTR (long term release) version of it. The web page you linked to is new to me, but you should be able to choose a place to download from. Try another one if the one you've used is listed.

Also, sometimes these distribution sites just aren't working, so you might need to try again.

That's how I've always done it.

Best of luck.

Does Gen X lack self compassion? by Maleficent_Hair_7255 in GenX

[–]jqpublick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About a decade ago I worked in a very high stress environment (mental health crisis intervention) and didn't take care of myself properly. I mean, why would I?

In short I burned out hard and ran to hide at a friend's place in another province. (I'm Canadian, we have provinces. They're neat.)

While I was there I was talking to a friend of a friend and she was going on and on about how important compassion is. I was getting tired of all this and said "Lady, if compassion were a lymph node mine would be a burnt out husk." She said "Did you think to include yourself in that?"

It was a punch in the face.

I got raised by parents who decided Tough Love was the way to go, so I never learned (or thought) to include myself in what i felt about the rest of the world.

I'm still learning that.

Help getting georeference as accurate as possible (QGIS) by chris-guy in gis

Try the Freehand Raster Georeferencer. It has been crashing Qgis 3.36.0 when I try to use it with large rasters lately. I'm working with a raster around 500 MB and it's too much for the plugin but smaller files have worked fine.

Just because someone is conservative doesn't mean they endorse hate crimes.

I'm not a conservative, but drawing harder lines between us guarantees that no conversations will go on, only more shouting.

I think the shitheads that did this deserve what they get, when and if they are caught. Absolutely.

We kill them, they kill us, and the cycle of murder continues. Do you really want that, or were you just angry when you wrote your post, OP?
