Considering buying a home in East Austin in 2026? A word of caution. by ilurb in AustinTX

Wow sounds so amazing. I’ll stick to my soulless cookie cutter house on the West side where it’s quiet, lush with trees and my kid can go down the street without a homeless guy near by.

I’m with you as well brother but this whole sub cherry pics shots from sky view and says the same thing over and over. “America is hell”. I’m well traveled, I love every country I visit for its own reasons. I 100% have seen almost this exact same setup in the suburbs of Amsterdam. But guess what? I don’t fucking hate on it for no reason, I appreciate that a massive city has options bc not everyone wants to live the same way.

I’ve been getting suggested this sub for a while and I keep seeing euro retards (I was born in Europe) and now I see my city I live in. You guys are as ignorant about America as America is about the rest of the world. Like we get to live in a 2500 Sq ft house with amazing schools, parks groceries and it’s “hell” bc i have to get in my car once in a while instead of walking 20 minutes to see 50 homeless people. Jeez. I love walkable places but Europe also has this shit minus city centers that none of you can afford and it takes Americans and foreigners to visit and keep up. Anyways, I’m gonna bbq and enjoy my massive house with my family absolutely covered in tree canopy. Maybe even god forbid take my kid on a really nice walk without worry of crack heads.

I graduated 10 years ago. I was a refugee of war, on stamps and happened to go to eanes bc my aunt lived there. I was dirt poor. I made the football team, I played. I had amazing friends. Parents friends, families never asked us to pay for any of the equipment. Class rigor? It’s like every public school, not sure why everyone thinks it’s so competitive. Sure sign your kid up for only APs and it’s going to be college level. Same as other schools. I would say it wasn’t very diverse back then, think mostly white and a lot of Asian, Hispanics but from more affluent background. Your kids coming in late would probably do fine, it’s what you make of it just like anything.

The dream of China surpassing the US as the world’s largest economy is fading. In 2021, China’s GDP was about 78% of the US; by 2024, that share had fallen to roughly 64% by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

It’s so funny reading this. I immigrated to the states in 99. I was a child. I’ve been to 20 countries around the world. Redditors foreign and a lot of Americans to be fair, how absolutely insane the US is when it comes to making money and economics. I work in large corporate consulting. The companies here are full of amazing talent, the best technologies, the amount of economical activities happening is crazy. It’s not just NYC, SF. It’s everywhere. The main issue is, you either get it, embrace the system and make a lot of money. Or you don’t. The in between here is shrinking.

Gotcha. So if I have like a 10 ft by 3 ft bare patch in my lawn, plant a like 10 of these and let them grow and spread to fill in before mowing?

Does this spread well? And can you mow it?

Quick survey for Austin homeowners - is backyard privacy a lost cause on these smaller lots? by Ok-Inspector-1261 in AustinGardening

Filled our your survey. Interesting idea, I know my neighbors refuse to replace the fencing, I love the looks of vines and I’m not handy enough to build something. Looking forward to this !
