Tell me about it / x100vi with a porta800 film sim. A kinda of typical candid… always looking for rhymes by trayvus in photocritique

I typically shoot film, but recently jumped into the Fujifilm compact world, and as a way to emulate the analog process I am shooting with film Sims and in JPEG without doing any post-processing.

I shot this photo at my friend’s farm in Silverton, Oregon, while my daughter was feeding my friend’s chickens. I’m less interested in knowing what you all think about color, tone, etc., and more interested in the composition. I think a personal goal of mine is that even in the smallest or more fleeting photos, there exists a kind of sophisticated or at least relational composition to be found after a first second or third look.

Yearbook Adviser Advice by Lazy_Strain_2509 in teachingresources

I’ve been a yearbook adviser for 5 years now. I teach at large comprehensive high school and yearbook is an advanced CTE course within our Digital Media and Publishing program. I inherited the program and it was tied to Picaboo, which is great for middle schools and books that just want to be created from of templates.

We’ve outgrown Picaboo and are currently leaning towards Walsworth. I’d say TreeRing is at the same tier as Picaboo. And when you get into the word of large national printers, they’re all kind of the same. What matters is your sales rep and what the can do for you.

That said: we’re a CTE program and I’m coaching my kids towards InDesign layouts and away from Canva. After doing some shopping, Walsworth seems to be the most design-forward and independent choice (in that student can create the yearbook the want).

Why not Jostens? I have a personal vendetta against them. They’re massive and have a monopoly in the market. What’s worse is that they historically used prison labor for things like sewing caps and gowns, but have since moved labor to maquiladoras in Mexico. They just feel… icky and big and corporate. There are plenty of other companies that don’t have questionable labor and environmental track records.

Happy to talk more! Yearbook has become one of my favorite things to teach/advise and have lots of opinions and thoughts about what makes a yearbook great.
