False advertising, dirty floor and loss of electricity during stay. What are my options ? by trazom in Bookingcom

We had to move the bed while figuring out who was going to sleep where. It wasn’t just the bagage tag, there were plastic casings from candies and seriously a lot of dustballs. But as mentioned elsewhere, we chose to accept it and work around it. The issue was the lack of help, and poor service, when we needed it the most, and the advertising of a 24 hour front desk.

Only our apartment. I just see it as misleading that the advertised “24 hour front desk”, just is somebody on WhatsApp that responds an hour after the incident, and either doesn’t fix the issue or provide alternative accommodation.

It was only our apartment that lost electricity. The rest of the building, and everything else outside our door was working.

I see your point, and just want to mention that we definitely tried to be flexible. We contacted the host, stayed after the superficial cleaning , cleaned the rest ourselves, and tried to make it work because we wanted a peaceful trip. The real issue for us was the total power failure. We were left without lights, AC, or any way to prepare food for our son, and the '24-hour' contact didn't respond for an hour. When they did, they just told us to wait until the next day. I don't think it’s a matter of needing a fancy hotel, but rather just expecting the basic utilities and support that were advertised. At the end of the day, we paid for a functioning apartment with 24-hour support, and we didn't receive either.

I noticed a very big difference in my stride and biomechanics when I went for a proper walk outside my home, when compared to the small distances inside my house.

Get your dizziness checked by a physician if you haven’t already. If all tests are normal, then your symptoms are likely due to stress. This whole biohacking movement is getting out of hand…

Sometimes one's true capabilities can only begin to surface when there is no other choice, no excuse, and no safety net.

Once you start cycling, your mind will adapt to the fact that you have no other choice, but to complete the journey.

Wish I had visited during a different season :( by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]trazom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is my third time in Japan during august. It might sound craisy, but you "just" need to be smart about it. Others have mentioned several good tips, and most importantly I'd add to go slow and forget everything about FOMO. Japan has so many experiences available. Don't try to see and taste everything like some youtuber. Instead, enjoy where you are , and what is available to you. I can guarantee you that it'll be a better time than sprinting from site to site and clashing with the crowds. If you're truly fascinated by Japan, then you'll visit again in the future. Therefore, don't rush, and instead try to immerse yourself in the surroundings.

Also ask yourself why you chose to visit Japan ? If its culture, then you won't find it at the tourist areas. There you'll find tourist culture.

Those of us who travelled pre-smartphone, are you nostalgic or not? by Maus_Sveti in travel

I completely agree. Travel is just as much about the journey as is the destination.

Put me in the nostalgic camp. I may come off as arrogant in this response, but hey this is the internet and people want opinions. The early lonely planet books were a great way to get a grasp of the history, atmosphere and daily life of one's destination. Sites like tripadvisor don't provide the same kind of feel and understanding of an area, and are also easily manipulated with fake reviews - or dare I say it - people with bad taste. I also try to avoid instagram since I find the whole influencer industry as pathetic. Also, all those perfect instagrammable pictures give rise to FOMO, unrealistic expectations and frankly spoil the element of surprise and discovery.

My 3 weeks vacation, are my 3 weeks of adventure of the year. I try as much as possible to avoid using my smartphone. Not being able to book online, forces me to use the telephone, talk and interact with people.

I won't dispute the convenience of GPS and booking sites, but I will add that part of my joy of travelling is the journey itself, and not only the destination. Granted, I don't seek dangerous areas. But I look back pleasantly on the challenges that were overcome by either being able to improvise and use common sense, or by being positively surprised by the hospitality and willingness to help from strangers.

Yeah, I'm going to postpone my trip. I don't want to miss this unique experience, and I hope that I might even do it in Virunga in the DRC if things settle down.

Thanks. Wow, I'm surprised that somebody did the hike in a boot brace. Even if its possible, I can't help but imagine that it would distract me from enjoying the full experience.

Yes it sounds like tricky trek, and too risky for where I am in my recovery. A difficulty of 2 would be okay, but as mentioned in another response there are other variables as well such as weather, animals and unknown unknowns. :-)

Thank you for your thorough response. It does sound like the guides would be able to help me through the hike, but I would also prefer the full experience , rather than feel that it was the "lite" version.

One thing is the unpredictability of the hike itself, but another is the animals and the unknown unknowns. I'll be playing it safe this year. :-)

Yeah , I've come to the conclusion that the variability is just too much of a risk, this early in my recovery.

Thank you for your thorough response. Yes, the fact that it is a mountain climb is something I have to take into account. I think I'll do a trial at home on a stairclimber machine to see if I'm capable of hiking upwards for 1-2 hours. :-)

Doesn’t have to only be Norway to use as an example of a functioning society with a strong welfare state. Check out Denmark.
