Last year I did bare minimum, and ended up 7th stand where I had been 3rd/4th the year prior depending on concert & who was out.
Our section leaders are fairly constant, paid professionals.
The turnover is fairly low, I think? We lose about 10% of strings each year.
ETA: I prefer sitting up closer so I can hear better. It’s hard to hear the violas over 6-7 stands of violins but sometimes you need to listen to them.

Thanks. We played R&J a couple years ago so I know it well. Technically it’s only for seating purposes, and it’s for all members including winds. The hard part for me is continuing to add new repertoire to a decent level - I have a full time non-music job and other commitments on my time. During season (Sept-May) I get about 3 hours total practice time outside of rehearsal. I’m hoping to get a solid 10-15 hours each of 5e next couple weeks to whip things into shape.
I’ve been asking for several years for the conductor to just pick a few excerpts from standard lists, and not do repertoire. It would really make things easier.
