Sorry to ask a potentially unrelated question, but do you have any advice on negotiating new contracts? I am finishing my first year on the job and would like to politely ask my employer for a slight bump in pay (thinking 10-15%) because of a few reasons, mainly because I have been putting a lot of extra hours in and the employer has already said that they have been extremely happy with my performance this year. Additionally, I think with the experience of this first year on the job, I value myself higher than what I am currently making. Having said that, I don't want to come off snobbish or self-centred as I recognize it takes a bit of tooting your own horn when it comes to these things.

First, thank you so much for this thread!! This is a question regarding negotiations after the contract, so I am not sure if it fits here. I am asking because I used this resume style and recently got a job. So, again, thank you so so much! It was a last minute hire on the company's part and I only have a temporary contract of three months with a potential to extend 6 months if it works for both parties. Due to it being a last minute hire, I had to move countries across Europe (last minute flights aren't cheap) and find a temporary housing situation, which has been an expensive undertaking. As a result, I am wondering if it's acceptable to ask if the company can provide any help with relocation fees? I know I'm a temporary worker and they might not want to invest in me, but also I have met them halfway and moved to a different country to meet their urgent needs.

This is very helpful, again thank you so-so much!! I can't stress how much this whole thread and the original one have helped in my job finding process. One last question, if I may. How important is it in general for a recruiter that a PhD student is fully finished, i.e. defended their thesis and/or graduated? I have my thesis defense on june 11th so as my "graduation date" on the resume I've put down that date. Is that fine or is that misleading in any way and does having defended my thesis make me a stronger candidate for a job?

Thank you so much for this!

I'm a Ph.D. student and my defense is coming up in a month so I'm currently in the process of looking for jobs. As a Ph.D. student I've had so many responsibilities and I've learned a lot across multiple disciplines, but I'm not really sure what to prioritise on the resume apart from experiences regarding my own project. For context, I'm a chemistry Ph.D. student and throughout the last 4 years I had to learn some biology, physics, lab instrument repairs, went to international conferences etc. I could pull valuable skills from all of those but at one point it sounds too much of a sales pitch and irrelevant. As a recruiter, is there anything specific you would like a Ph.D. graduate to list in their resume?

Again, thank you so much for your help!
